Hi Jodi, I would go for the absolute minimum you can get away with for those as they're definitely high on the sugar/startch count. Anything that starts the ingredient list as 'a decadent blend of sweet feed and molasses...' can't really be that good for anybody but they sure taste good. :-) Thanks, PA 2014 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Sherry%20and%20Scutch_Scarlet/Scutch%20Case%20History.pdf |

Great! Thank you, giving 1 per day just to get the medication in. I break it up in 4 pieces. first piece as a primer, 2 pieces loaded with pergolide and the last piece without meds. i feed them all right after each other quickly. -- Jennifer Boydstun Folsom, Ca. Re: Sparky & Ike Hoof Xrays - Path Forward?
He tends to be "ouchy" for the first 3-4 weeks after a trim, then gets more comfortable (not totally comfy, but better)....just in time for the 6-week trim. It's a vicious cycle. :(

Beet-E-Bites Pill Pockets-SAFE?
Jennifer Boydstun
We were having trouble getting our boy to eat Pergolide in anything. I ordered the Beet-E-Bite pill pockets apple flavored and he gobbled up his medicine. Are they Safe? the starch seems high at 4.9%.
They are tested by Equi-Analytical Labs and are 3.3% ESC (Simple sugars) and 4.9% Starch for a total value @ 8.2%. Recommendations for carbohydrate sensitive horses are 10% and under. -- Jennifer Boydstun Folsom, Ca. Re: Laminitis/Founder podcast episode
CORRECTION
There is one study that showed less severe laminitis in the fructan sepsis model when icing was started at first sign of laminitis https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24004323 As far as I know, no benefit has been shown in endocrinopathic laminitis when started after the horse is lame. It also has not been tested in horses with naturally occurring EMS. -- Eleanor in PA www.drkellon.com |

Re: How many PPID horses still rideable
Bonnie
My Welsh pony is 21 years old, rideable and still driven with a pony cart. He was diagnosed PPID at age 12. His pergolide dose is 24 mg. There is no lack of energy: canters uphill to barn when called, sliding stop at the door.

ironic_acres@...
My PPID boy is ridden or worked with three times a week. Up until a month ago, we rode anywhere, anytime any type trail. He developed symptoms of Lymes and is currently in treatment for that. Just got permission from vet to start riding him slowly and on the flat again. We will be back at it tomorrow!

Re: Hidding Prascend
Martha that´s a great idea. Obviously you have a lot of practice in administering medication. Logo was blessed to have you. I don´t trust much the caretakers giving it by srynge because they are not the most sensitive when handling animals because they have a lot of work and need to go fast over things. I fear Yayo will end up being head shy. He lets me touch his mouth from the inside, clean his gum ulcer, clean the inside of his nostrils and do as much as I like with great patience, I don´t want to lose that, but thanks a lot for the idea just in case it is needed.
Laura the prascend oreo made me laugh haha, I love it. Yes! vegan biscuits, that´s a wonderful idea, I will look into that. I am happy because I don´t know how but he is already putting some weight on him, I believe it is the extra hay and the new concentrate with a source of energy he can utilize instead of so much starch. He has the most shinny coat of all horses because of the supplements despite his ugly long hair. Can´t wait to recieve the Prascend. Thank you all for your help. I will keep you posted. -- María Durán Navarro Dec 2017 Madrid (Spain) Plutón´s Case History Plutón´s Photo Album _._,_._,_

Hi Jodi, if he gets his pergolide in a tiny muffin at the same time he gets his low s/s meal, I think that would be ok. Those muffins are pretty irresistible, I bet he doesn't even notice the capsule. He's a good looking
boy, by the way, I love his color and cute face.
