I’m so sorry for your loss, Dawn. I hope you will continue to implement what you learned from Tipperary in helping others here. While he may be missing from your barn - and I know how that hurts - he will very much remain a part of our group.

Re: Please help with hay analysis
gypsylassie
Hi Ed, I don't know why, but several labs I've worked with seem to push the NIR as very accurate, when we know how far off it can be. A lab not too far from me here in N IL, which has a good rating and I thought would be convenient
and fast, actually started telling me their wet chem machine for measuring sugar and starch was down and I'd have to make do with NIR. I went back to Equi Analytical. They also seem to tout NIR, but at least they're happy to do wet chem when we request
it. FWIW

Donna Coughlin
I so enjoyed reading about Tipperary's life and lineage; what an amazing creature and a wonderful piece of history you've described. I grew up with a Morgan mare but never knew about the breed's full history, just Justin Morgan. Tipperary was so lucky to have found you; he had the best of care and love. That love you shared and the happy memories will remain with you forever. -- Donna Coughlin, Robin Goodfellow and Ariel Max; Duke (5/21) and Obi (5/17) over the Rainbow Bridge CT 2009 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Donna%20and%20Duke%20-%20Robin%20Goodfellow

Falki's Recent Blood Work - June 2022
Connie Proceviat
Good Evening All,
We received Falki's blood work results yesterday. I haven't updated his case history yet. ACTH 5.1 (2-10) on 1 mg. compounded pergolide. Glucose 5.7 (3.7-6.7) Insulin >1435 (<300) Not a typo! We purchased 1st cut grass hay last year which tested under 10% but not by much. Then we had a drought for the remainder of last season. We purchased more hay in early April 2022 (what we were told was the same batch as 1st cut from 2021) We started soaking as soon as we received his blood work results and returned to the emergency diet. Will be sampling the remaining bales. Should we start to increase his pergolide to 2 mgs at this time in preparation for the seasonal rise? Any other suggestions regarding his crazy high insulin? If you're looking at information on humans we have much less digestive tract than a horse does.

Hi Ed, If it were my horse I would call and ask them to confirm that 644 is done via Wet Chem and if they still have your sample and can run it.

Re: Slippery Elm and absorption of minerals/vitamins
Mialisa@...
This info was from a minor google search:
All astringent (tannin containing) herbs inhibit absorption through the intestinal tract, so should be taken at separate times from vitamin and mineral supplements. The most useful time to take slippery elm bark powder is at before bedtime, so that the digestive tract can be protected from the attack of acids for the entire night. https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search;_ylt=AwrEeJ7EOq1iEmwAPDcPxQt.;_ylc=X1MDMjExNDcwMDU1OQRfcgMyBGZyA3locy1tbmV0LTAwMQRmcjIDc2ItdG9wBGdwcmlkA2IxMHNMbkFsUTBDSXRpT2tQT1lWWkEEbl9yc2x0AzAEbl9zdWdnAzQEb3JpZ2luA3NlYXJjaC55YWhvby5jb20EcG9zAzAEcHFzdHIDBHBxc3RybAMwBHFzdHJsAzYwBHF1ZXJ5A3NsaXBwZXJ5JTIwZWxtJTIwYmFyayUyMHBvd2RlciUyMGFic29ycHRpb24lMjBvZiUyMHZpdGFtaW5zJTIwYW5kJTIwbWluZXJhbHMEdF9zdG1wAzE2NTU1MjAwMjA-?p=slippery+elm+bark+powder+absorption+of+vitamins+and+minerals&fr2=sb-top&hspart=mnet&hsimp=yhs-001¶m1=6246¶m2=84501&type=type9045647-spa-6246-84501 Maybe I should study more in depth and not just take the surface info as gospel. -- Rene` in WI 2021 CaseHistory@ECIR.groups.io | Album https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Rene%60%20and%20Isaac https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Rene%60%20and%20Joshua

APF question
Mialisa@...
I have been looking into APF as recommended. Two of the ingredients in this are:Eleutherococcus senticosus - Siberian ginseng and Echinopanax elatus - a relative of Panax ginseng. In an article by Dr. Kellon on the use of Jiaogulan it was stated that we should use caution when adding any other Ginseng to the diet. https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/files/Pain%20Medication%20and%20Alternatives/Jiaogulan,%20Nitric%20Oxide%20Support,%20AAKG%20and%20Supps/Jiaogulan%20Doses%20and%20Precautions.pdf The following may reduce the effect of Jiaogulan and should be avoided: Ginsengs and other herbs that have some nitric oxide stimulating potential, such as Hawthorne As always, just being cautious. -- Rene` in WI 2021 CaseHistory@ECIR.groups.io | Album https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Rene%60%20and%20Isaac https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Rene%60%20and%20Joshua

Re: Please help with hay analysis
Hi Carol,
Hi Sherry, Thanks for the responses! I'm soaking this (and any other) hay for an hour before feeding. I talked with the lab and they said that NIR has all checks and balances in place and that the tests are pretty much equivalent. I'm not knowledgeable in this so I took their word for it. This is the first cutting from the field that I will continue buying from if the hay is good. The previous sample was from the same field, but the third cutting of last year. To an untrained eye they look comparable - I'm not sure if that's accurate, of if this is even relevant. I can certainly call them and try to get them to run #644 if they still have the remainder of the sample. Should I?
