Re: Thriving pets moving?

Ian at Thriving Pets told me this:

Hi, Judy. Thank you for taking the time to let us know of your questions and concerns about the future of ThrivingPets. The business is relocating from Colorado to Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, do to delays in construction the new space will not be completed and inspected by the Board of Pharmacy prior to the expiration of our lease and move date from Colorado- October 31, 2016. We are doing everything we can to minimize the down time but contractors and the government aren't known for their timeliness. As a result, we anticipate that we will unable to fulfill prescriptions for the months of November and December. We hope to be able to fulfill prescriptions as of January 1, 2017. In the meantime, we are encouraging our clients to stock up on prescription medications before October 31, 2016.

Thank you,
Ian

My experience was just the opposite.  Even at double strength and (at the time) $1000 a month Lamina Saver did not work as well as jiaogulan.

Can you confirm expiration dates on you container? I understand you may have thrown old ones away. Perhaps recording going forward?

Thanks.

Re: Biotin 1% or 2%

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

The 1% or 2% refers to how  much biotin is in it.  It's almost impossible to accurately measure 10 to 20 mg so biotin needs to be in a carrier that makes it easier to measure.

Re: 5 days free feeding and psyllium - how do I proceed after 5 days

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

If you continue to get sand you can repeat the psyllium every 2 to 4 weeks.  I would leave the hay free choice until she is at a good weight (ribs covered but easily felt).  Be sure to keep track of how much she is actually eating.  She may scale back on her own as she gains more weight.

Can you help us here,Shannon,by giving details on your experience? How long did you use each product, for example? Was Jiaogulan used as directed?  What other,if any ,changes did you make when changing to LS ? What clinical signs changed with LS,and how long before you noticed these?

LS is hugely expensive. As an experienced  PPID/IR care giver, I can't stress how important it is to watch every penny, as long as it isn't at the expense of the pony.

Jiaogulan  used as directed, with all other protocols are in place, would be a good place to start.

Jiaogulan herb is good, and I found that LaminaSaver is even better (even though jiaogulan is likely the most potent ingredient).  If you have the money to spend on LaminaSaver, I would recommend that to at least get through this.  All of Figuerola products seem to do as advertised, but this one has been the best in my experience.

X-rays, hoof pix (not the best), and Insulin results for Majik

Shannon

Hi!  I've uploaded X-rays, hoof pictures (not the best - I will get better ones when I have a farrier out in a few days), and history of insulin results for Majik.  Any feedback would be awesome!  Case History and I are having issues partly b/c I am on an old Macintosh and partly due to not having much free time to figure it out.  WILL get it up though!  She is currently sound and on her IR diet of hay and low starch feed (tiny amount).  Exercise is about to increase quite a bit with riding!  (YAY!)

What is their expiration date for, say, a batch of 10mg capsules made on Sept 15th , do you know?

Why I order more than 30 capsules at a time.

LJ Friedman

For those of us that order a higher than usual mg value of pergolide ( I order 10.0mg)or perhaps  an odd qty like 3.5 mg.. etc. the reason that I order more than 30, is that my pharmacy. petshealth. makes a minimum of 100 for each order they get.. and stock the rest and they say. they toss the capsules they have in stock  if it goes past expiration  of the pergolide they used.. 0n 9/15 I recd 45 capsules of 10mg perg. On Monday,10/23, . I re ordered another 45 and it was shipped the same day bec they had these 45 capsules remaining from the last time they made an order for me on 9/15..  My takeaway.. if you order 1.0mg capsules. it probably makes sense to order 30 capsules at a time due to hi turnover.. for those of us who use petshealth and use a less than popular qty. assume you wont get freshly made capsules each time you order.. this is how pethshealth works.  While I cant speak for the other compounding pharmacies, I'm thinking they dont make a small batch of 30 capsules each time and perhaps they make 100 and stock the rest.  You can ask your pharmacy.. they should have details of each strength's date produced, expiration. etc.

That is rather discouraging research about pergolide efficacy over time.  But, what is one to do?  I suppose Prascend is more stable, but I cannot afford 4 mg of that a day.  I had better stick to ordering 30 compounded capsules at a time after this.

Tina,

Could you just get a paper script from your vet, and then transmit it yourself to each of the pharmacies? Then you could do the legwork!

I am not familiar with all of the pharmacies listed but have found both Wedgewood and VPA to be reasonable in the past. Have you investigated Roadrunner (AZ)? Not sure about their pricing but they are a very large veterinary compounding pharmacy.

Someone just posted a great checklist when shopping for a new compounding pharmacy -- I am going to make a copy of it for future use! I know that those on high doses must be very careful with their $$, but at the same time, it is essential to insure we are using reputable pharmacies with good track records to avoid problems with product potency.

RE-writing some things, so went to double check on the link I just sent.  Here's quote:

If one can disregard this concern, the products appearing to be the most stable are the solid materials (powders and capsules). Only 3 of 14 (21%) of the liquid products were above the required potency after 15 days, and all products were subpotent by 30 days.  Conversely, the solid products showed better stability, with five of seven products that started at acceptable potency still at 90% after 30 days (the other two products were only slightly below the required potency).

Research that is basis of our recommendation showed 90 percent efficacy at 30 days for capsules.
