Re: Allergic reaction
Swelling is down about 50 percent this morning, most importantly all appears normal at his throat and nose. But, his sheath is swollen huge and hard as is his chest.
He wants to eat, but hasn't drank any water at all since before this all started. Waiting for the vet to Call me now. Wallene and Travis in NC

Benadryl is given per weight of the horse - my horse is about 1,000 lbs so she gets 10 - 25mg tabs. Vet said twice a day but she only has needed one dose each time - she's allergic to those midges. Actually, Benadryl is given at the start of a reaction - if it's been more than a few days out, I don't know if it would have any effect. I have also used Benadryl gel on the skin over the swelling and that has worked when the reaction has not been as severe. The directions say not to use the topical gel along with the tablets, as the dose would be increased. Am not familiar with Tri-hist - maybe someone else in the group is. I would be very wary of Prednisone in a horse with metabolic problems. Karen ME/2014 ---- "wallenereimer@... [EquineCushings]" <EquineCushings@...> wrote:

It sounds like a good plan!! But probably a little far to go.. I've been told that equinanilytical sells them. So I'll check with them I guess! Thank you so very much for the offer though!

Severe IR
lj friedman
Jesse has severe IR via the program that shows this. I know I am lucky that I've had no problems with him. I'm curious why he was lucky . Before i started treatment. I did everything wrong.. 1 hr or grass a day. tons of carrots, no exercise and senior feed that was unbalanced. Might this mean he is the type of horse that allows for large margin or error? He is 25 and was likely untreated for many years.. Could some horses that have awful labs, never present with laminitis? lj friedman san diego nov 2014.

Hi Nancy To keep him his current weight feeding 2 percent of body weight now would be 22 lbs. Picture of him from 9-5-2015 in album,he's dirty but gives a good idea of how he looks, weight wise. How does his weight look to you in that pic from 9-5-2015 ? I think he looks ok but i see him every day. Went up 1 mg this morning on pergolide will go up again 1 mg in 2 to 3 days. So just stay with the numotizine and skip soaking with epsom salt? I did massage him tonight after doing feet, not sure he liked it much was pinning his ears at me. Yes i'am going to go to all cubes for his diet, hay has to much alfalfa in it. So once up to 6 mg of pergolide re test in 3 weeks?? i'v got the funds so is do able. Working on both front and back feet when i trim, its not going to be a fast fix on either fronts or backs. Can post pics of how they look so far, since lavinia did markups for me,not huge progress but some. Re: Allergic reaction
I was in the house for an hour to have dinner and post here. When I went back to the barn we was 5 times worse and I freaked out. I gave him the prednisone and started hosing again.
He finally seems to be feeling a bit better, thank GOD. I hated to give him the shot, but I couldn't watch him struggle to breathe through his swollen throat and nostrils. We can come back from laminitis, it won't be the first time. Thanks for all the replies. I'll post as things progress. Wallene and Travis in NC

Re: Need Help With Hoof Abscessing trouble
I'm sorry he is abscessing but it is potentially a much better place than laminitis.
Numotizine. Numotizine Numotizine. Better than epsom salt, IMO. IME. And trim. Hind end lameness can very likely be due to compensation for pain in the fores. Massage. Manage trim. Re blood work...you need to get on with pergolide increase. I know you know that. Re: Diet...If going all cubes, should be 2 percent of his *desired* weight. If in the budget, retesting in three weeks will show if your current level of pergolide is adequate. Continue to monitor symptoms. Re: Allergic reaction
Hi Wallene
Prednisone may have less of a whack on him than Dex but it is not guaranteed risk free. Were Travis here I'd be asking my vet why the need for steroids vs the other approaches mentioned. Try this Equine Cushings and Insulin Resistance Studies here talk about administering prednisone locally. Hi Wallene
I expect someone has answered already, but just in case. You should be able to get Witch Hazel at almost any drug store or health food store. I've only seen it as a liquid, but a salve would be nice too. Good luck. Kathleen M NorCal June, 2001 . Chanda
You should be able to find Witch Hazel in a well stocked drugstore, I've only seen it in liquid form. [My grandpa used it as an astringent to clean his face, especially in the summer and fall while working in the field. I think this is the brand he had, but it's changed in the last 30 some years: T.N. Dickinson's All Natural Astringent For Face and Body ] Chanda MT 9/04

Re: Allergic reaction
Hi Wallene, I can't offer internal solutions but have recently used Witch Hazel, salve and liquid, on welts on my Canadian, with great success. A friend of mine was curious about it and applied it to welts on her arm,and had almost immediate relief. We watched the welts going down. Just a thought. Lorna in |Ontario 2002 ECIR Moderator

Need Help With Hoof Abscessing trouble
corrine haffner
Hi Need advice on hoof abscessing issues, jasper has had issues with abscesses on his RF hoof blew out i'am guessing five had five holes. Have been flushing out hole with diluted betadine and lots of stuff comes out,now today only one hole is currently open. He was a lot better with lameness now today he's back to being very lame, lameness does appear to be in hind end also. Is flushing out these holes a good idea?? i'am doing so gently so not blasting it out. Also doing numotizine with diaper then boot over that,at night i soak his foot in epsom salts with very warm water for 20 minutes. Let his hoof dry then re wrap with numotizine diaper and boot. Been working on his trim every 7 days getting toes backed up and heels backed up. What else can i do to help him out with these abscesses other then what i'v been doing?? Have current test re sults from last testing here's post number 196564. Post on questions about diet and other questions are post number 196569. Don't have current test results in case history yet will get that done tomorrow, along with target dose for pergolide. Allergic reaction
Travis has had a bad allergic reaction to something and has huge, hot, welts all over his underside. My vet says he needs a corticosteroid like Dex, or Prednisone. He is aware of his IR and thinks the Prednisone may be a safer option than Dex.
I know he shouldn't get them but I need to know is there an acceptable alternative? He just got some banamine and I've been hosing his belly which seems to be making him more comfortable, but if it gets worse, I need to know what the options are. Wallene and Travis in NC Sept 2012 ECHistory6
