REPOST: need advice on when to test Frisky
J Foust
Hi, What I have read so fare is that July or Aug-Nov is the time to test. If I test now (dec) would I just be waisting my $? If someone has time could they take a minute to look at the photos of Frisky and his case history and tell me what they would do as far as testing and treatment for this horse? He's on a balanced diet. (without the soy bean meal) He has not been tested before. He has not foundered. I assume he can't get on the drug until I have a test? But then it seems that people give the drug seasonally. So perhaps he doesn't need it right now??? I have a date with my husband to draw blood on Frisky this coming Monday the 7th. Frisky has a sever phobia of needles and I really try to limit his exposure to them to the bare minimum. Thanks a bunch!!! links to files are below. J. We can all learn together. >>P.S. The state the horse is at has low SE and no other symptoms so I think we have another problem. Ok,just a word of caution - but I think you are probably right - that of my 5 horses who got nailed with Se toxicity, not all of them displayed the hair loss.and not all had garlic breath, previous to sloughing. Not sure why,but must have something to do with how each horse metabolized the stuff, depending on age, breed, etc. On top of that mystery, all 9 of my horses had been fed the toxic mix,but 4 escaped the nightmare. Dunno. Why don't you copy /paste your initial message as a new topic on Horsekeeping ? Let me know if you have trouble doing that, but it should work. Thank you,
I will check the link. This mare was brought to the barn with the only visible problems with her hooves being WLD. Can you transfer to the HorseKeeping Site? Or do I do that? More input is always better. We can all learn together. P.S. The state the horse is at has low SE and no other symptoms so I think we have another problem. Alison Cold Lake, AB 2011 |

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND THE ECIR Groups
ThePitchforkPrincess@...
Can't find what you want or have no idea what goes where?
An Overview of the ECIR Group and How it Connects On Line:
ECIRHORSE.ORG – The ECIR Website, a great publicly accessible educational resource for members and non-members alike. Includes:
ECIR ON FACEBOOK –The Equine Cushing’s and Insulin Resistance Facebook page is complimentary to the Equine Cushing’s and Insulin Resistance Yahoo outreach group. It is a great place for exploring the facts about PPID and IR, rehabilitation, diet.
Known in the group as the "sister sites" or "sister groups". All Yahoo groups are hosted by Yahoo! (Yahoo Inc). The ECIR uses many individual groups to host various topics/subjects. Each one has Messages, Files, Photos and various other "sections". Each group will have sections that aren't needed and are turned off. Below is a listing of the groups and explanation of its primary use.
ECIR Group - the main group that started it all.
ECIR Messages – The "Main List". Post questions about IR or PPID, or questions about horses that have PPID or IR. Hoof care questions about individual IR or PPID horse should be posted here. See How to Search the Message Archives for searching tips.
ECIR Files - the place to find information. Search by clicking on the Files Section and then entering your search term in the box at the top of the screen. You can also search with ECIR Files Table of Contents - a "files map” with additional links to information not found in the files. Many of the files’ documents are in PDF format requiring Adobe Reader to view them. Get a free version here. Some documents are in Microsoft Excel format. Get a free reader here.
ECIR Photos - Member posted photo albums. Each of our associated Yahoo Groups has a section for photos. In general, the ECHistory group where you first uploaded your case history should contain the photos pertaining to your equine.
ECIR Links - A treasure trove of handy and important links to tools. UK members have their own folder. A must see for new members.
Databases -Member Submitted information and Data: Pergolide Dosage Database – Links to Statistics, Member Entries and Form to submit entries. Regional Member Database – listing by location of members offering help, equipment to loan, services and much more.
Polls - Information needed to help Dr. Kellon form new protocols to help our equines. Filling these out is a great way to show appreciation for all the help she has given. The more consolidated info she has, the better to help us all.
EC Hoof - Post messages for discussing non-IR and PPID hoof care here. Hoof care for laminitis/founder for IR and PPID horses should take place in the ECIR Messages l
ECHorsekeeping - Discuss general horse care, DYI ideas, or equine related issues considered off topic in the main list. ECHISTORY GROUPS: Except for the Original Case History site, all ECHistory Groups are also hosted by Yahoo. ECIR Members must join each one to view a case history that is posted to that group.
Original Case History - A non-ECIR searchable archive containing some of the Original Case Histories (2003 to 2007) from our first case history site “sport horses”. The Sport Horses site was abruptly deleted from Internet many years ago. If your information is on this webpage, please save it by copying it and uploading it to your current case history folder.
ECHistory1 - Case Histories posted from 2008 -2009. ECHistory1 – Overflow - Case Histories moved from ECIR Main List Files. ECHistory8 – Location currently accepting new or transferred case histories. Instructions and templates are issued upon joining.
Thank you for your cooperation,

Re: Saliva inducer
Instead of poor saliva production (which would influence anything she tries to eat) or weak muscles it's more likely she is a victim of overzealous dentistry and/or age related change in the angle of the chewing plane which makes it less efficient. Except for higher cost, there is nothing wrong with her current diet as long as her insulin is normal and it is balanced. Going forward she will benefit from a wet diet if you are not already doing that. If swallowing is a concern you can "lubricate" meals by the addition of some psyllium, although soaked flax has a similar effect.

Re: Hoof Sloughing-Source?
>>Any suggestions on how to determine what is causing the problem (ie. selenium?) and what methods were used to resolve would be appreciated ie. removing the source/infection/treatment. Hi Alison, Nancy gathered all the Selenium Toxicity posts and linked to them a few years ago. While I try to find that, if you search Drummer/Selenium a lot of old posts will come up. I can also send you a detailed history of the nightmare if you like. In the meantime, if you have a suspicion about Se, I would double check all the items the mare is being fed for Se content. Everything going in. I know you have an issue Out West with Se in the soil, whereas my problem came from faulty custom mineral mix. We're Se deficient in the East. You can also do a blood test for Se . IME, before the sloughing came loss of mane and tail hair, garlic breath, slight lameness, abscess-like 'moisture' at coronary bands. This is OT for this group, but we could carry on over on Horsekeeping - https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ECHorsekeeping/info - better than privately, because you will have input from more people than just me. In any case, I'm at windybriars at gmail dot com . Hoof Sloughing-Source?
Alison Bahry
I have been searching the site for any additional information regarding "hoof sloughing" and toxicity. I came across a post regarding this and was going to private message but can't seem to find that option. Maybe not allowed anymore. So I hope Lorna will chime in an old message indicated you had this problem. The horse in question is a pregnant TB, one front hoof is sloughed off and x-ray shows pedal bone rotation very close to penetrating sole. Not my horse yet looking for any direction to help. (I have a IR horse therefore member on this site). Horse was taken off high protein hay as believed to be too high in protein and placed on a low sugar/starch bag feed but this is very high in fat. I believe this is the wrong direction yet not sure. I cannot see where anyone has written that high protein could cause this type of toxicity/sloughing - but I am not sure. Any suggestions on how to determine what is causing the problem (ie. selenium?) and what methods were used to resolve would be appreciated ie. removing the source/infection/treatment. Thank you Alison Cold Lake, AB 2011 |

Saliva inducer
jamsler707@...
Since Luxy can not chew & swallow hay, Her teeth have been checked out as fine, she has had 2 chiro sessions with 2 different chiro's who each use a different method, it had been suggested to me in an earlier post that maybe she doesn't have enough saliva or she has weak jaw muscles. So is there anything I can give a Cushings/non-IR horse to aid in saliva production? She won't eat the ODTB cubes so right now she is getting BS Hay Stretcher & some Sentinel LS. I don't suppose there is anything to be done if it is just weak muscles. I haven't updated her CH since her last bloodwork but she is on 2 mg Pergolide & her ACTH is good. Thanks!
