ACTH testing time

Is June an appropriate month to perform ACTH testing or have I missed the Spring window?

Re: Banamine/Gabapentin/Pentoxifylline
How long has he been going between trims? To be fair, the onset of white line disease may have caused the current issues. If he was not growing much foot between trims, a longer trim interval is reasonable but WLD may have taken hold.

Lavinia Fiscaletti
Hi Alyson,
Daisy travels all over the country, so it's likely she would be able to come out to your location - or you might be able to trailer over to her. Definitely worth contacting her, as she has a lot of experience (and success) with complicated cases. Thanks for adding the earlier rads. Unfortunately, Charlie's trim has deteriorated since the 4-2021 rads were done. His toe length was good in those earlier rads, with the breakover set in an appropriate location. Because the toes weren't too long horizontally, you didn't have the hoof capsule displacement that is present now (capsular rotation). There also wasn't any wall flaring. The thin soles were present in the earlier rads and haven't changed. -- Lavinia, George Too, Calvin (PPID) and Dinky (PPID/IR) Nappi, George and Dante Over the Bridge Jan 05, RI Moderator ECIR |

Re: Hay Balancing
Kimberly,
This hay is already below 10% moisture so doesn't need an more time to cure. I can balance it for you free if you use Uckele products to balance. It's not too difficult to balance but the ESC + starch is a concern. Ryn's insulin is still in a danger zone and it looks like you just discontinued metformin. This hay could tip him over the edge if unsoaked. If you are willing to soak and want balancing send me an e-mail at kellon "at" uckele.com. -- Eleanor in PA www.drkellon.com |

Re: Excessive Salt Consumption
Both horses are out 24/7 in a paddock. They both have access to small-hole hay nets. Atticus has EOTRH and will soon have to have all his incisors removed; of his bottom incisors are already gone. They got a little fat in January and I’m trying to get them to lose weight now, with as much exercise as I have time for and they have willingness for.
Thank you all for your input. :) -- Laurie and Atticus and Diamond - 05 2016 Diamond Case History - https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Laurie%20and%20Atticus/Diamond%20Case%20History/Diamond%27s%20Case%20History.pdf Atticus Photos - https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=42693&p=Name,,,20,1,0,0

Hay Balancing
Kimberly
I have uploaded the same hay analysis in both Ryn and Mouse's case history. I think I did it correctly but not sure. This was a small first cutting and the hay did not have any time to cure before testing. We used the test #603. Do I need to go to another file to see if someone can help me balance it and would curing make a difference in the numbers? ESC and starch are a smidge over the 10% mark. thanks for any guidance on how to have it balanced. Thanks all.

Re: Chewy now has compounded pergolide via RX
Jennifer, unless your vet writes the prescription as "x mg pergolide as pergolide mesylate", you would need to multiply your Prascend dose by 1.3 to get the new compounded pergolide dose.

Dr Kellon, you finally helped me understand the conversion process. I was so darn confused by it because of how some pharmacies do the conversion already (like Covetrus) but i guess some others don't. Thank you!!!

Yes. Lateral views may be helpful too. For the sole shots, please remove as much loose dirt as possible. A brush works well.

I then switched to my current farrier in May 2021, and thought my horses were in good hands ...To be fair, those feet would be a challenge for any farrier or trimmer to deal with. Daisy Haven Farm will have the resources and experience needed to deal with this so I hope you can get him seen there. Re: Need assistance with trimming hooves and BCS
a.k.a.petpalace2@...
Sherry,
You are correct, that is the recommendation on ecirhorse.org but I didn't realize it was because it's the only known lab doing wet chemistry hay analysis for ESC and that NIR is not reliable. I needed to sample 3 small lots of hay so I used a local lab that works with local ag coop and I didn't have to ship my samples which helped save some money (so I thought). I don't know how I'm going to find hay for Apollo. There's grass hay for sale locally but not any that's been tested. When I extend my search to commercial hay growers "specializing" in low sugar hay, they may do wet chemistry analysis but it doesn't include ESC either, just NSC. Is there a way to use NSC levels to purchase hay? -- Karen B. Re: Banamine/Gabapentin/Pentoxifylline
Hmmm...it may be challenging to get images that meet all those specifications. I am widowed and live alone, so holding him still for all those angles may be a challenge. Even more challenging, is the surface: I still have him in his barn on a good layer of shavings for comfort. He has also been wearing SoftRide boots. I'm reluctant to remove both the boots and the shavings at the same time - even if only briefly for photos. I do have weekly trainer appointments on Tuesday mornings, and maybe I could get all these shots next Tue June 21.

Speaking from personal experience only, my horses showed no signs of IR tendencies when I lived in Florida and had them on a warm season grass pasture full time. After moving to NC (where Fescue is the main grass) I started noticing issues with their hooves.

Re: Please help with hay analysis
Ed,
There is nothing that particularly concerns me about this hay and it can easily be balanced. However, you ran the #601 instead of the #603. The difference is the lab uses NIR technology to only estimate the ESC and starch instead of an actual calculation using wet chemistry. If you want the actual ESC and starch, call the lab and ask them to run a #644 on the sample they already have. Then you'll have the equivalent of a #603 test.
