Great news - Princess is so lucky to have you as her mom. Instead of soaking, try using a poultice of Numotizine. That way, you get the drawing action and antiseptic properties without the wet environment:

Definitely don't want to use J-herb and bute together. Why is the vet insisting on remaining on bute?  If it's been longer than 10 days, would recommend stopping the bute as it will interfere with healing. Phyto-Quench would be a good substitute or maybe Devil's Claw. Shouldn't use them combined with the Jiaogulan, however.

Can you get a current lateral pic of that clubby foot? You may be able to remove most of the damaged area at this point.

My IR/Cushings 30 year old mare Amber has arthritis in her hocks (vet diagnosed).  I have been researching Adequan and one of the side effect is that Adequan can cause trouble with blood clotting.  Amber is on Jioagulan and spirulina for her allergies and I was wondering if I decide to use Adequan, should I stop Jioagulan totally or just not give it right after I give her a shot.  My vet wants me to wait until the fall because he thinks her hocks will get better during the Summer. I will admit that she seems better when it is warmer.  She looks like she has "trigger fetlocks" in her hind legs.  She is also on HA and chondroitin.  She does not seem to be in any pain, she just clicks.  Opinions please.

What abt panty hose or cheesecloth as a way to let air in but keep larger debris out? Or both since p hose is fragile but finer mesh, and cheesecloth is sturdier but wider mesh?

  Thanks for the peanut in shell and celery treat ideas.  She LIKES them!  Still not nuts about beet pulp, but eats most of a half cup soaked. I'm mixing in 1 oz (small jigger) of the Purina Mini feed altho this is not approved, but it was expensive and want to use it up, which should take a good while at this rate. I'm thinking that the beet pulp she has to consume with it lowers the GI sufficiently.  She has also been grazing, with muzzle for most of the past two cloudy days.  Grass is green but not growing much.  So far, so good--bright eyed, bushy tailed, cold feet, running and bucking.  Her sugar load is greatly reduced from what it was when she was constantly inhaling (probably) high sugar hay, and maybe that's enough for now.
  She seems to be doing quite well on 3/4 mg Prascend,  perhaps because of seasonal factors.  I had thought to raise her up to 1 mg, partly because I'm not good at dividing a half tablet in half,  but 3/4 seems adequate for the time being.  Maybe just the season.
  I'm trying to get together with some other Cushings  IR horse owners in my riding club to go in on hay testing. One member has a hay probe.  Life would be easier without hay soaking, which is drowning and muddying the yard.
  One question I've had is,  does low sugar affect the palatability of hay? Can you feed your non IR horse -tall TB, opposite metabolically--low sugar hay?   I would be grateful for a source of good nutritional info on concentrates for this type of horse, if you know some.  I imagine having tested hay and adding what's missing is good for all types.

Thanks so much Rita and everyone who has sent messages both publicly and privately.  Your words are a comfort.  Though I miss her, I am doing okay.  Rita I'm sure Houdon and Dawn are gossiping beneath an apple tree somewhere. Gee I sure hope Dawn isn't telling him anything about the some of the crazy camping trips we went on.

Thanks for that. I need to do more reading - I don't know whether 51 is high or low on the Cushings "score" board.  I did read that Dr Kellon says something along the lines of the right dosage is whatever is right for the horse and I like that mentality because they are all soooo very different.

Bonnie is really comfortable at the moment. I think the combination of finally finding boots that fit her properly (she is booted 24/7) and changing her to the Emergency Diet (still a work in progress) have been contributing factors.

Something I do want to mention is the misconceptions about Cushings. My vet, when he phoned me this afternoon admitted that he really didn't think Bonnie had Cushings and that I was wasting my money having her tested. HOWEVER, as a result of her results, he will now be recommending ACTH testing to his clients that have laminitic horses that are not responding to dietary changes. He has treated Bonnie through most of her abscessing and laminitic events so knows her quite well and was just blown away that she is Cushings positive. 

There is also a lady on the hoof trimming FB page I'm a member of that is now thinking about getting her mare tested because of Bonnie's results....I feel quite proud of the two of us :o)

My horse, Bonnie, has had her lab results back today and is confirmed Cushings. While I'm sad she has it, I am also immensely relieved as I can now, hopefully, manage her laminitis.

My vet has prescribed Prascend. Having just read the "Prascend Experiences" in the files section, I am quite worried about giving her Prascend as there seem to be more bad than good experiences.

Prascend is brand new in Australia and I suspect that is why my vet has prescribed it but if the general consensus is that compounded is better, I will take the tablets back and insist on a script for compounded. 

Yours thoughts would be most appreciated :)

Hi, Valeree - I went looking for info, and really only found info on humans with adenomas that had hyperprolactinemia. that was interfering with testosterone production. Once the prolactin normalized on pergolide, the testoserone also returned to normal.  I can't for the life of me figure out how to copy and paste on this tablet, but if you go to pubmed and type "perolide testosterone" in the search box, you will come  up with some studies.

Hi, Lj - Some years ago all three of my horses had low total T4.  After 4 or 5 months of mineral balancing and supplemental Iodine and selenium as well, I did the full panel. They then all had low normal T4, but elevated free T4 and T3.  So, I lowered the iodine a hair. I am glad I did the full panel, as in my opinion it gives a more complete picture.

Well, for heaven's sake! That's what happens with sticky keys on the tablet. "bloodwpportork" is suppoosed to be "bloodwork"!
