Is there any study/person who has tried Inositol with IR horses?

Re: IR horse - help with crest

harr754@...

My last post was about a month ago and things have not gotten any better.  His feet are still sore (and not growing) and he still has a crest.

He's been on the APF for 5 weeks and the ALCAR and Jao. for 4 weeks.

Not really sure where to go from here.  Even though his ACTH number was okay, should I try him on pergolide?

Please help.

Hi Sue,

Great news - Princess is so lucky to have you as her mom. Instead of soaking, try using a poultice of Numotizine. That way, you get the drawing action and antiseptic properties without the wet environment:

http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=4fa01f0e-3a8a-4ffe-a694-ab474ac070cf

Definitely don't want to use J-herb and bute together. Why is the vet insisting on remaining on bute?  If it's been longer than 10 days, would recommend stopping the bute as it will interfere with healing. Phyto-Quench would be a good substitute or maybe Devil's Claw. Shouldn't use them combined with the Jiaogulan, however.

Can you get a current lateral pic of that clubby foot? You may be able to remove most of the damaged area at this point.

Re: Sourcing Manganese Sulphate, Selenium and Iodine

Connie Proceviat

Hi All,

I ended up ordering manganese from Horsetech and selenium and iodine from Uckele then plan to pick up at border to minimize possible issues with customs.

I have a gram scale which I use to weigh supps periodically to make sure nothing has changed with weights however I don't weigh them each and every time. Is it recommended to weigh every time?

Thank you to Jaini and Eva for your advice and tips.

Falki's blood draw is scheduled for April 21. Looking forward to getting results

Much appreciated,

My current selenium yeast is a concentrated 2 mg/gram from Uckele, so it really should be weighed with a very accurate and sensitive scale.

Jaini has also sent a reply….if you find anything different, would you please let us know?

Looking at your CH, I noticed that you are using measuring spoons to portion your minerals.  Given Falki’s problems, you might want to try a gram scale to weigh your minerals for more accurate and consistent measuring.

Re: Adequan and Jioagulan - Reposting

My IR/Cushings 30 year old mare Amber has arthritis in her hocks (vet diagnosed).  I have been researching Adequan and one of the side effect is that Adequan can cause trouble with blood clotting.  Amber is on Jioagulan and spirulina for her allergies and I was wondering if I decide to use Adequan, should I stop Jioagulan totally or just not give it right after I give her a shot.  My vet wants me to wait until the fall because he thinks her hocks will get better during the Summer. I will admit that she seems better when it is warmer.  She looks like she has "trigger fetlocks" in her hind legs.  She is also on HA and chondroitin.  She does not seem to be in any pain, she just clicks.  Opinions please.

What abt panty hose or cheesecloth as a way to let air in but keep larger debris out? Or both since p hose is fragile but finer mesh, and cheesecloth is sturdier but wider mesh?

Re: Diagnosing PPID

Maggie,

Thanks for the peanut in shell and celery treat ideas.  She LIKES them!  Still not nuts about beet pulp, but eats most of a half cup soaked. I'm mixing in 1 oz (small jigger) of the Purina Mini feed altho this is not approved, but it was expensive and want to use it up, which should take a good while at this rate. I'm thinking that the beet pulp she has to consume with it lowers the GI sufficiently.  She has also been grazing, with muzzle for most of the past two cloudy days.  Grass is green but not growing much.  So far, so good--bright eyed, bushy tailed, cold feet, running and bucking.  Her sugar load is greatly reduced from what it was when she was constantly inhaling (probably) high sugar hay, and maybe that's enough for now.
She seems to be doing quite well on 3/4 mg Prascend,  perhaps because of seasonal factors.  I had thought to raise her up to 1 mg, partly because I'm not good at dividing a half tablet in half,  but 3/4 seems adequate for the time being.  Maybe just the season.
I'm trying to get together with some other Cushings  IR horse owners in my riding club to go in on hay testing. One member has a hay probe.  Life would be easier without hay soaking, which is drowning and muddying the yard.
One question I've had is,  does low sugar affect the palatability of hay? Can you feed your non IR horse -tall TB, opposite metabolically--low sugar hay?   I would be grateful for a source of good nutritional info on concentrates for this type of horse, if you know some.  I imagine having tested hay and adding what's missing is good for all types.

Thanks again for all your help.

sue & princess/ soaking/ drying hoof question

sue wolf <wolffarm4@...>

Hello everyone,
princess hoof is looking better and the infection is gone. no more smell or discharge.. but I try and clean out all the dead stuff I can but its going to take time and it needs to grow out.  I need some suggestions for her hoof, she has a big whole in the front of her club foot almost here whole front is gone. I have been soaking it and putting meds in it to clear it up. its been 14 day now and I need to change it. I can't soak her hoof for ever. it need to be dry and get some air.. my problem is. I have to keep it clean and dry, the dry part is easy but to keep it clean and let it air out is the problem.. she has soft rides on and I have her toe wrapped up in vet wrap and a sock on it (thanks to my husband) to stop it from getting rub marks from the boots. the socks do not let much air in and the vet wrap does not help with the air flow.. any suggestions on what would work.. Also the vet wants me to keep her on bute. shes on one gram 1X a day.. what can I do to replace that? I was thinking of the phyto-quench. shes on the j herb. not sure if I'm getting anything out of it with the bute but I'll take any little it might help.. not sure if you needed her sight.
thanks Sue & princess oh 6/11

Thanks so much Rita and everyone who has sent messages both publicly and privately.  Your words are a comfort.  Though I miss her, I am doing okay.  Rita I'm sure Houdon and Dawn are gossiping beneath an apple tree somewhere. Gee I sure hope Dawn isn't telling him anything about the some of the crazy camping trips we went on.

Hang in there Rita and all who are going through this loss.  Grief like most any other thing in life is dynamic.  It has a cycle.  The good news about grief is that pain generally fades with time.

Something I do want to mention is the misconceptions about Cushings. My vet, when he phoned me this afternoon admitted that he really didn't think Bonnie had Cushings and that I was wasting my money having her tested. HOWEVER, as a result of her results, he will now be recommending ACTH testing to his clients that have laminitic horses that are not responding to dietary changes. He has treated Bonnie through most of her abscessing and laminitic events so knows her quite well and was just blown away that she is Cushings positive.

Woohoo- that's great news. Sounds like your vet is a keeper. Maybe he'd be interested in joining this group for more information or at least direct him to Equine Cushing's and Insulin Resistance Group Inc. I'll keep the photo intact as Jack was such a sweetie:)

Hi Pauline

Thanks for that. I need to do more reading - I don't know whether 51 is high or low on the Cushings "score" board.  I did read that Dr Kellon says something along the lines of the right dosage is whatever is right for the horse and I like that mentality because they are all soooo very different.

Bonnie is really comfortable at the moment. I think the combination of finally finding boots that fit her properly (she is booted 24/7) and changing her to the Emergency Diet (still a work in progress) have been contributing factors.

There is also a lady on the hoof trimming FB page I'm a member of that is now thinking about getting her mare tested because of Bonnie's results....I feel quite proud of the two of us :o)

Hi Sarah,

Sorry to hear that the results have come back positive, - good for you  though for trusting your gut instinct and following it through. It will depend on what her numbers for the eACTH were to get a better idea of a dosage you may need to work up to.  (ok I now know it was 51)

Prascend and pergolide (compounded) are the same drug- just a different presentation of the same medication.  While there have been horses noted to have a bad experience with prascend, the same can be said for compounded. If they are going to experience a “pergolide veil”– they will do it with either drug if they are titrated up to quickly. I’d be inclined to start with the Prascend & monitor her. She may be one of those horses that may only need pergolide seasonally in the initial stages – given her age (Mods- please correct me if I’m wrong on that)

There is a product in the USA that is called APF- which helps with the pergolide veil. It’s not available in Australia , but can be imported at a cost.  Otherwise, start at half a tablet for a few days and assess her response- then slowly increase to the 1 mg- taking care of respecting that handling instructions for you.

How is she going at the moment, comfort level etc.

Prascend vs Compounded????

My horse, Bonnie, has had her lab results back today and is confirmed Cushings. While I'm sad she has it, I am also immensely relieved as I can now, hopefully, manage her laminitis.

My vet has prescribed Prascend. Having just read the "Prascend Experiences" in the files section, I am quite worried about giving her Prascend as there seem to be more bad than good experiences.

Prascend is brand new in Australia and I suspect that is why my vet has prescribed it but if the general consensus is that compounded is better, I will take the tablets back and insist on a script for compounded.

Yours thoughts would be most appreciated :)

Re: Pergolide & testosterone / 2nd request

janieclougher@...

Hi, Valeree - I went looking for info, and really only found info on humans with adenomas that had hyperprolactinemia. that was interfering with testosterone production. Once the prolactin normalized on pergolide, the testoserone also returned to normal.  I can't for the life of me figure out how to copy and paste on this tablet, but if you go to pubmed and type "perolide testosterone" in the search box, you will come  up with some studies.

So, in a stallion, I would think there would be obvious increases in testosterone; in geldings not so much, as there is much less produced in the adrenals.  In both cases, rather than an increase in testosterone per se, it is more of a return to normal testosterone status.

Re: T4 cornell vs full thyroid

janieclougher@...

Hi, Lj - Some years ago all three of my horses had low total T4.  After 4 or 5 months of mineral balancing and supplemental Iodine and selenium as well, I did the full panel. They then all had low normal T4, but elevated free T4 and T3.  So, I lowered the iodine a hair. I am glad I did the full panel, as in my opinion it gives a more complete picture.

. .. The vet at Cornell in charge of the department  got on the line and said all she cares about is T4. and if it were her, there is . no need to do the other full thyroid tests.  Looking to get some direction as I did spend an additional $100 to add the full thyroid.. if not really needed then I wont do full thyroid in May?.. lj friedman san diego nov 2014.
