Dee,

Do you oil it every 3 minutes like the instructions say?   Is that a pain?

We use these on icelandics, they are amazing!  A professional groomer turned me onto them.

Vet said i could give Dormosedan, but don't think that is reccomended ?? I'v heard also ace won't work on an already excited horse, don't recall where though.  I know it's not doing much for jasper he's still all in a tizzy,he was very attached to chardonnay.

Regarding the Ace - Dr. K will know better than me - but I've been told it will not work well if the horse is already upset.  It can't attach properly as the horse is already excited.

Did your vet mention perhaps using something else to get him calm, then follow up with Ace as needed?

In my experience, if you can give the Ace when the horse is calm - you only need to 2 or 3cc to help a horse stay relaxed.

Since Jasper is already upset, even 10cc might not be able to work.

I read the Escape files and gave her extra magnesium for a total dose today of 5000mg.

I never felt pulses before.  I can feel her existing ouchy left fore pulse pretty easily but how soon after grass would it elevate or bound, and is there any way to tell if that's her normal ouchy pulse?

It doesn't feel hard and pushy, but like a good steady pulse should feel if I took it on myself.  I read they are often very faint though.

Her heart rate is 48 bpm, which is only a tad higher than her normal 42.

Should I tape some ice packs on anyway, or would that make her already present laminits worse??

Thanks! She was out for an hour. Grass and clover are very green but not tall. She has front teeth but no back teeth.  I guess I skip Jiagulan tonight too, right?

Corrine, my horse Khartoon and I are praying for you and Jasper. Khartoon is a healer and could sense my distress today over your and Jasper's distress and We both want Jasper to get through this.
I would never speak for this group but it seems from what I've read that everyone wants to be with you in spirit to support you and Jasper and we have Chardonnay in our hearts as she makes her way to the clouds in the sky to run with those who've gone before her.
Thinking of you and Jasper and hoping for recovery as fast as possible.
I'm not sure this is a an acceptable question, but I'm just wondering where you live? Perhaps someone who lives close by could help out a bit? If only to keep you company.

What size is 'pretty good' ? Inches?
If he were here I would put DMSO on the sole, avoiding the holes.

>Also the acepromazine  5 mg didn't seem to do anything, would it be ok to give 10 mg ??

I think your vet recommended 15.........do you mean mgs? Or mls?

So 10 does not sound unreasonable to me to try.

>Without boots over the bandage they don't hold up to his pacing and abcess holes get full of manure.

You can make 'boots' out of duct tape.It is taped over the sole and up the sides, all around the hoof, covers the walls. You can have several layers that cover the sole. Also reinforce in the toe area.
Or you can start the 'boot' beforehand.Lay duct tape sticky side up,cut in strips, crossing each other to make an area that will cover the hoof, and leave enough length of tape to go up the wall.Place solid taped area on sole of hoof, and quickly fold remaining tape up the sides/front of the hoof.
I'm sorry - that was a terrible description.I hope it made some sense.
You might find a better description in the Archives.
I've done this many times - the duct tape boot thing.Works beautifully.

The IR blues...

Kerry Isherwood

Crap.  I get one IR stabillized and the other falls apart.  I have no idea why, but now my 8yo gelding's insulin is 70uU/mL, the highest its ever been.  I just dont understand....

I knew something was wrong when he started getting spooky a few days ago.  That's always the first sign.  Then we went on a trail ride and an hour in he suddenly reverted back to crazytown, seriously deranged behavior he hasn't exhibited in over two years.  The other riders were mortified; I was so embarrassed.  Hence the blood draw.

I will update his case history so fresh eyes can look at it and check for holes.  Briefly, though, he's on 15 lbs/day ODTBC and soaked hay (tiny bit).  VItE/flax/salt.  Strictly drylotted.  Feet are the same as always.  I dont know what changed to cause this insulin surge.  Is 8yrs old too young for PPID?  What do I do, stop the cubes and just feed soaked hay?  The max ESC + starch he's getting is in the cubes (the hay was analyzed and is soaked).  ARGhhhhh!!!

Please bear with me.  I'm just venting....so right now my 21yo PPID/IR mare is the most stable horse I own.  Unbelievable!

Another thought: My journal says the blue-black manure started when we got on ALCAR.
Maybe it's mobilizing and excreting fat stores? That would be great to see those fat pads shrink!
That's my current thinking anyway... She's doing so well and I'm so proud of her!
Thanks everyone for the great input.

I have the Arco SE cordless too.   While I haven't clipped my Cushing's gelding with it, I did clip 3 yearling minis with it last spring, one was extremely hairy and one was largely shed out.  I did one per day and it got through all three, unwashed.  I was duly impressed.

Hi

Just a few questions,is it ok to put DMSO on his sole when there are pretty good size holes from abcesses? ?Dr kellon suggested that an a message to me this morning.

Also the acepromazine  5 mg didn't seem to do anything, would it be ok to give 10 mg ??  I bandaged his feet and put his boot on over them, seems to make him sorer with boots added. Bandages are just a thin layer with duct tape to hold it in place.

Without boots over the bandage they don't hold up to his pacing and abcess holes get full of manure.Just don't think having those holes get so dirty is good, afraid of serious infection getting started in his hoofs.

Ok i'll try not to post so much now,i'v taken over the message board here last few days.

Re: Clippers for Cushings Coat / ACTH

Deb, that is most interesting about the small clipper.  Thanks! Certainly the cordless feature is a real plus.  Cords get in the way when you only have one hand and your horse moves around.  At least I know that is how it is with a hose.

The vet called today with results on our latest ACTH test and the number has gone way down, though not far enough.  She is going to mail me the results and then I hope to try again and suceed to post a case history for Rudy.  {Fingers crossed!}  He is also barely below the range for IR.  Vet thinks the things I have been doing (Diet, Pergolide, Flax, vitamin E, Remission) have been working. :)  Anyway, he has lost 100 pounds since January.

Terri,

I'm so sorry for your loss. She joins a very special herd on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. Stormy was one of the luckiest ponies ever to have been born into your care. You gave her the ultimate gift by being able to set her free when the time was right. Know this leaves a hole in your heart. May memories of better days take the place of the sadness you now feel.

Thank-you for sharing her story with us so that others could learn from your journey together. And thanks for thinking of others at this sad time.

I have several things of hers that I would be happy to pass on for free if anyone can use them.

Re: Clippers for Cushings Coat

Hi Judy--  I only have a section B Welsh pony (he's still pretty big) but, and I know this sounds hard to believe, I have had good success for the last three years clipping him with this:

http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=2e87c446-7b6a-11d5-a192-00b0d0204ae5&ccd=IGO047&gclid=CPCFtr2liMYCFc9hfgodXK8AEA

It is a cordless Arco SE clipper.  I got it because at 22 years, Cory had never been clipped and I didn't want to have a battle with him.  I hoped the cordless clipper would be quiet and unobtrusive and in fact, with his fan on he doesn't even notice it.  I don't even think this is advertised as a horse clipper.

In less than an hour I can have all of his winter coat off of him and he looks pretty good.  I admit that there are some rough spots, but that's me, not the clipper.  I am only interested in getting the long hair off.

I did buy a new blade this year, and it was like a hot knife through butter.  Also, Cory hates being bathed and although I did my best, I wouldn't say he was the cleanest horse.  So, I do recommend this clipper with the caveat that I don't know how large Rudy is or how the clipper would work on a large animal.  The blade is only about an inch and three quarters.  I am only telling you all of this because before I ordered it I dithered for weeks trying to figure out what to get.  I wished I had more info.

Hi
Thank Lee Ann & Donna i knew she was going to need putting down, but wasn't ready to lose her yesterday, she was 28 almost 29 years old. I owned her for 26 1/2 years, she was my princess up to the very end. I miss her demanding ways and her beautiful face, the barn isn't the same don't have her to nicker to me for her food, and bang on her stall door.

Got the acepromazine gave jasper 5mg not sure it has done anything, maybe he's to hyped up and nervy that its not working?? He has blow out two huge abcesses on both front and they left good size holes in his soles, they were packed full of bedding and manure. Flushed the heck out of then did the poultice, wasn't sure if i should put DMSO on his soles with big holes from abcesses??

He's still very stiff and has yet to lay down,he just keeps looking and calling for chardonny.

Vet said i could give up to 15mg of the ace seems like a lot not sure i should give that much?? maybe it would help more because he's so hyped up?? Wish he would lay down and rest he is very sore but just keeps pacing around stall any way, just moving slower now. Groomed him and gave him treats, sugar free mints seemed to really like that.

Thanks,

Aha.
Ok.

I'm not sure what they mean by *high* beet pulp.
I've only ever fed about 4 pounds, tops.Have never seen the manure they describe.
I'm sure there isn't enough beet pulp in ODTBC to be considered *high*. But that's just my guess.

>I found it - the web site is: www.thehorse.com/articles/31417/what-does-your-horse-stool-say
It says: "High beet pulp can lead to reddish-brown fecal balls and a sticky, clear film around the balls".
Since my horse is on the Balance Cubes, I saw this as an explanation to what I was seeing, since my horse is in otherwise good health with current worming and negative sand in colon. I should not have said, perhaps, that the TBC were i.

Re: low insulin test

Kerry Isherwood

Hi Judy,

To help get things moving along for you, will you furnish dates these insulin tests were drawn, what lab, units of measure used in results (uU/ml, etc), and what brand of Senior grain you are feeding? also if glucose and/or leptin blood results were obtained aling w the insulin? Cyproheptadine as a treatment for IR/EMS is new to me (I have two IRs!) so I will be interested to hear what others suggest.

Thanks! Soon more official help will be sent your way but if you want to start gathering the above info it will help us help you even faster!

>It was in an article I read on line when looking up info re - horses manure - normal/abnormal - it said that if a horse is fed beet pulp it's manure can take on a slightly shiny look.

I'm confused, Karen.
You said this before:
"I have read that this is not uncommon for horses that are on the Timothy Balance Cubes - mine is, and I have noticed that her manure has that same look to it that you are describing."

It's interesting though - that description you mentioned. I've always thought that slightly shiny manure balls were a good thing.

Weren't we talking about a blue hue to the manure originally? And ODTBC ?
