Re: Starting invokana Dr Kellon please

Suzy Berkowitz

Dr Kellon, Scout gets 1 cup of Stabul 1 that he sometimes eats sometimes doesn’t. He shares his pasture/ stalls with a mule and I feed 13 lbs a day  of the cubes between them that I have to break into small pieces. A bucket in each stall and 2 buckets outside where they come and go as they please. He is not a great eater, so the mule probably gets alot of Scouts share. Our setup is the barn is in the pasture so they have access 24 hours to graze the typical south Florida field.  Scout doesn’t like wet stuff so I have never tried the beet pulp. He can’t eat hay. The L- carnitine is on its way. I ordered from the link you provided. How much should he get? He got his metformin dose this morning and I will start the invokana this evening at 5 pm.  Is the 75mg dose correct? Thank you

Thank you!  Yes, I bought L-car off Amazon and plan to start it soon.  The Buggzo seemed to help with the flies the last two summers, but wasn’t sure if the garlic would interfere with the Invokana or be risky to feed for her liver and/or kidneys.

Hi Ellen,

Not sure why you felt this needed a private reply but you are correct, there is only one photo in Emmy's album here:https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=85584. We hope that people do only create one album and keep all their photos in that album and a quick search reveals that there is only one album for Joy and Emmy.

Annette, I can't imagine what you must be feeling having so much history with your girl. Truly sorry for your loss. It's never easy under any circumstance. You have some wonderful memories to hold in your heart once the grief begins to soften. Prayers.

Hi Robin,

You want ESC+starch under 10% and no alfalfa in the hay.  If you can source Triple Crown products and get the Triple Crown Naturals Timothy Balance Cubes you can feed just those for Hogan's diet.  They are fed at a 3:4 ratio to hay so at 250lbs Hogan would eat 3.75lbs of those per day as his TOTAL diet. As the cubes are balanced to themselves you only would need to salt, flax and vitamin E to his diet and those could be added to soaked cubes or a minimal amount of beet pulp if you wanted to add that in.  If you did decide to use beet pulp as a carrier you might need to adjust the amount of cubes fed per day to keep him at his 2% of ideal weight total per day.

Soft Ride Boots: So, per advice to remove the frog portion and level the boots, we tried, not pretty. Was able to cut the frog out, but really can't get the insert level. Thought of putting a different insert in, but the soft ride boot inserts have the gel at the toe to protect the toe at the inside of the front of the boot.

So, I thought I would purchase these and will cut the frog out. Thoughts?

The glucose and insulin are optional but I would do at least insulin. As for monitoring, if you check just ACTH do it in September. I think you should be able to monitor him well with symptoms since his are so obvious - lethargy, eye bulges, muscle loss, stifle lameness that is likely ligamentous, increased thirst and urination, coat.

Lavinia, the hay has some alfalfa mixed in. I can't remove it. I'm told it's a small percentage.

Update on Hogan: He was trimmed on Friday. Followed your directions Lavinia - thank you! On Saturday he had greatly improved! He is on the emergency diet. I've ordered Vermont blend as a balancer to use until the hay can be retested per the guidance provided in this group.

Thank you all for your guidance! Greatly appreciate it.

So sorry, Annette. Both age and the PPID can weaken immunity. The organism may even have come in on some hay you bought.

bloodwork questions

Griffin Keller

This is mainly in regards to Sully with his PPID diagnosis.
I did the full EMS panel from Cornell plus TRH Stim in April.
Started Prascend 4/21.
Going to redo the TRH Stim end of this month for the study ... do I need to redo glucose or insulin then too? (calling to set this up so want to make sure I have it all)

Then going forward - when do I recheck and what? only ACTH later, every spring or do I need to check his fall rise?

Thanks!

It's probably safe but it won't work. Did you see the post about trying L-carnitine?

Re: Starting invokana Dr Kellon please

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

You can give the AM metformin the day you start Invokana and give it with Prascend. Yes to starting L-carnitine. Is he still only eating cubes and Stabul 1? How much of each? Can he eat hay? Will he eat beet pulp?

I think you meant LaminOX. Could you get some photos of his hooves post on the CH site? Given his last labs I wouldn't stop soaking. Don't wait any later than late July, early August to repeat ACTH and insulin. His Prascend should actually come up now.

Re: PPID horse and Ovenight Turnout

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

Sue,

You could be playing with fire, especially this early in the growing season. Late afternoon is the worst possible time to turn him out. Could you arrange for an insulin test after he's been out those 4 hours? If he is like most horses, that type of muzzle won't slow him down much.

Attn Lavinia - Hoof markups request please

Joy V

Edited

Hi Lavinia,

This may be too short of notice for my request.  I have a new hoof care professional and she is a little last minute (so far) with letting us know when she's coming to our barn.  This will be the 2nd trim with her and she is coming this Thursday.

Willie has had laminitis that began in February.  I had to clear out grass from his paddock and it took me some time.  He is getting weighed, tested, soaked hay, and diet is tight.  The vet was out on April 27th and he took blood.  Vet was happy with the results and says Willie's PPID/IR is controlled right now and he was super happy with Willie's weight loss.

I think a lot of Willie's lameness right now is due to his trim (she left his toes very long the first trim when he was actively laminitic still on 03/28/22) and I have been rasping them back since then but don't know if I'm doing it correctly and also the material I'm using for pads doesn't seem to be working for him (waiting for new pads to get delivered).  I don't think he is actually full blown laminitic right now, but I'm just not sure.  I can't afford xrays as the moment unfortunately.

I've been very worried about him for 4 months now and I'm hoping you can help.  If this is too short notice, please let me know and I'll take photos after his trim and upload those instead.  ***NOTE:  Willie's RF is completely fused from the joint at the bottom of the P1 to the tip of the coffin bone fyi.  I do have a 2015 xray of this that I also uploaded.

Thank you in advance!

Joy
