Re: Relevante - Question About Sweating

Lynn

Just got back from the barn. Relevante got a great report from the chiropractor [who is also a vet] ...she said he is doing really well. I posted a photo of him in his album doing his stretches for treats at the end of the appointment. Thanks Kirsten and Deb for your words of encouragement! I talked with our caregiver...she's going to help me get video of him gaiting up and down the driveway as well as when we are on the trail.

Lavinia - you must have been reading my mind. I checked him today for any sweat when I pulled him out to groom him before the chiropractor came. I didn't detect any sweat at all. It's 85 degrees today with humidity at 55 percent. He does have a white salt block in his feed bin at all times and he is using it. it was a little grungy from the oils/supplements/grain so I took it in the bathroom and rinsed it off.  I'm going to do what you said and up the amount of salt I put in his supplements as we are now moving into the hottest part of the summer. I checked with the caregiver (she lives on-site in an apartment that is part of the barn) and she says he is drinking approximately 5 quarts during the day and 5 at night...she keeps the water bucket filled.

Deb - you are so right....I treasure every moment we have when we are together and when we are riding. My Mom has had two back to back surgeries recently so I've only been able to go out once a week..I'm staying with them right now to care for her but once she gets back on her feet - I want to start going mid-week and just ride him around the farm.

Lesley,

I only have experience with the whole herb, not extracts. That is green, smells like sweet hay, and is well accepted.

That 42 isn't a real result. The blood must have been mishandled. Great on the triglycerides though.

That sounds wonderful!
I just received Gynostemma extract from Bulk Supplements.
What is it supposed to smell and taste like?
The package i got has a brown powder that seems like tea powder.
Not much taste, maybe like strong tea, no real smell. Like tannins or something.
Not offensive to me at all dry or in water.

I just got triglycerides results back. 110mg/dL. That is down from 227 on June 13th. Yay!! The beet pulp and L-carnitine are helping.  I had the vet run a glucose and it is 42. Is that number ok? Thanks

Such fantastic news Lynn. Your attention to detail and case history are one of the bests I have ever seen. Being out on the trails with your boy has to be

exhilarating. It was a hard pill to swallow when I had to realize Scotty was just too old to ride. Enjoy it for as long as you can :)

Sorry Nicolle and all of you if this has been already suggested, there is not a case history to look into it and there are tons of messages.

Only wanted to say that you might like to feed her several meals per day of very well hydrated hay pellets to help her hydration. Many like it so hydrated that it sounds like "choff choff" when they eat.
I would consider also some meals of a more concentrated source of cslories, something more nutritionally dense to compensate a bit for the reduced intake, so that she feels better.

Last year (I’ll try to find it) a member posted about building a “couch” for their horse that couldn’t get up. I actually built one for my little mare that led me here (severe arthritis), it works really well to help get up. Basically it was building a berm behind them so they could lean on it making eating and drinking easier. Since she’s not metabolic could you try watermelon to get some water in her? All my horses get a small piece everyday. We’ve been in the hundreds here too.

CHEWY reply to my complaint about STABUL1 Fenugreek

ferne fedeli

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I emailed CHEWY with the fact that one of their employees told me that the Fenugreek flavor of Stabul1 had additional nutritional ingredients and that was the reason it was more expensive than the other flavors.  I told them that someone in our group had checked with Stabul1 and that all the flavors were the same nutritionally.  Here is part of their reply.  They went on to say that they try to stay competitive on pricing as much as possible, but timing can be a problem...

Thanks for pawing in with this information. I would like to apologize on behalf of my colleague for the false and misrepresented information you received. This is certainly not the Chewy norm, nor is it acceptable. I have forwarded this to my higher ups for resolution.

Now I feel better!!! Ha.  Just won't order Fenugreek for awhile...

Another option is applying ice along the jugular groove, in the axillary and groin regions, and in the rectum. Wipe the water off as it melts.

Yes, the herb can do that, and does do that, so you have your answer. Enjoy! You also need to make sure her PPID is controlled and you keep her feet and legs warm in the cold.

Nicolle Dupont

Thank you Frances, that is a good suggestion.  I was thinking of spraying her with water but them her bedding would be all wet and that can't be good if they are lying on it all day/night.

Jiaogulan

@GHK

Hi.

When should you use Jiaogulan? My pony is feeling better and do not have any acute laminites, but had very low energy and was a bit off.
She also have cushings. She has had winterlaminites the two last winters and i wanted to try jiaogulan so i could prevent that this winter.

But is it wrong to start now?

I swear to god after 4 days on jiaogulan she runs around and seems verry happy.
She hasnt run for months. She has energy and she is just like she was years ago.

Could this herb do this?

We have never seen a problem with low glucose in horses on Invokana, although many were high before they started it. It would have been interesting to know if that was the case before he started it but at this point it's probably not an issue.

Re: Salt

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

If they are even just sweating between the hind legs and under the mane you can get into trouble very quickly in the high heat. Bare minimum target salt intake is 2 oz/day  - 4 tablespoons. You can't rely on salt lick intake at all. I'm sure it will happen as soon as I write this, but I've never heard of a horse refusing salted hay. Spread out the wet hay and sprinkle on the salt from your hand. Syringing it in is also an option but not likely to be very popular. Never syringe salt on an empty stomach.

Nicolle,

If she stands at this point it will only cause further damage to her feet. With people to help you can roll her up onto her sternum and prop her there with hay or straw bales. Another option you should look into is getting her in a sling. You can check with the humane league, local rescue (fire department), veterinary school or large hospital to see what resources are available.  To roll her sternal, reach across her back to tuck all 4 legs under her, then pull her head and neck around the side and back toward her tail while someone pushes on her back to roll her up.

Were a complete blood count and chemistry panel done? Are you able to get the doxy into her consistently?  Doxy is also antiinflammatory.

Use pain relievers only if she is not eating and drinking. You do NOT want to keep her on her feet. Phyto-Quench pellets do have Devil's claw https://www.uckele.com/phyto-quench-pellet.html and you can use as much as double dose twice a day. If you can't get that, start with 1 tsp of the powder twice a day.

Tramadol is another option but your vet may be reluctant since it's a controlled substance.

Have you read Druid's story? http://www.ironfreehoof.com/severe-laminitis-case-study.html
