Magnesium
Kathleen Hardy
I have been told by my vet to put my 20 year old
Morgan mare on Magnesium for her severe skin sensitivity. I purchased some today. Can someone tell me what the dosage should be for an approx 1000 lb horse? Hi Kassy,
Have you done a hay analysis? Joan and Dazzle --- In EquineCushings@..., Kathleen Hardy <khardy_13@...> wrote:

Hi Joan,
I haven't done a hay analysis but the guy I bought the hay from did (per my request). I have a copy of it at home and can post the results tomorrow. However, this issue of severe skin sensitivity is only 1 of my 3 horses; my Morgan mare Rhoda. My vet suggested giving her magnesium. I tried the Quiessence and it helped but I can't afford to keep her on that. So, my local feed guy sells 50# bags of Mag Ox. He sold us 4# for $2 so that we didn't have to buy all 50#'s until we know how well it works. I had them on the Alam feed for a month (per my local feed guy-he really wanted me to try it out) but at $17 per bag, I wasn't seeing enough positive results from it to warrant the cost. I have them on a good feed now - Purina Strategy. None of them are Cushings or IR. They get flax seed, spirulina, jiaogulan, and beet pulp. I just started Bambi on nettles for her heaves. Just need to figure out how much mag ox to give Rhoda now. If you think I should have the hay analysis looked at first, I can send you the info tomorrow. Let me know what you think. Thanks a bunch. Joan and Dazzle
Hi Kassy,
The reason that I'm asking is that by supplementing only what your horse needs, you will achieve a balance. Prior to doing Dazzle's hay analysis, I supplemented her with magnesium. I thought our hays were low. People "told me" to do it - it would help her allergies, it would help her cresty neck, it would help blah, blah, blah. But when I did the hay analysis, I found that I didn't need magnesium. There was plenty in the hay. If you've gotten the hay analysis, why not balance? Instead of adding random supplements, why not just figure out what they DO need. Dazzle only needed copper, zinc, kelp, selenium - besides the flax seed and vitamin e. There are no commercials supplements that met her needs on the copper and zinc. If you add magnesium and your hay is already adequate, you are causing an imbalance by putting in too much. So I asked if you had a hay analysis to see if you had balanced it. If you had, then I would want to look at the ratios to see if you were on the low end or on the high end. If you were on the low end, that will give you your answer on how much to add. If you are not on the low end, I wouldn't add any.... If the Quiessence helped and you want to keep her on that, determine the amount of magnesium that you fed her daily, then convert that to the mag ox. The mag ox is usually around 54%. A balanced diet is good for all horses, not just those who are IR or Cushings. Joan and Dazzle --- In EquineCushings@..., Kathleen Hardy <khardy_13@...> wrote:
