NEW LOW STARCH FEED...Dr. K..is this worth trying

n rand <nantomluna@...>

A friend of mine recently found out about a new feed, especially formulated to be low starch and I was todl appropriate for Cushings and IR horses. It is meant to be a "forage replacer". It has no vitamins/minerals added and is meant to be fed with a ration balancer like Grow N Win and with added salt.

Ingredients are: Soybean hulls, Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal. Dried plain beet pulp (unsweetened) Distillers Dried Grains and Wheat Middlings.

Analysis is below:

Any thoughts?

Are these numbers guaranteed analysis? Or just an analysis of an
average batch?

The sugar and starch numbers - almost 11% - may be too high for
sensitive horses, or may be just low enough for those that can
tolerate more sugar/starch.

Gro N Win would not balance this. It clearly doesn't have enough
calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, manganese to do the job. And with
an iron that high, I would recommend that Dr. Kellon balance it.

If the batches change, and the iron drops substantially from field
to field or batch to batch, you would need to test each batch.

I would want to know more about variability of the product. How much
does it change from batch to batch? It's not the worst feed out
there, but as far as sugar/starch, I can see it's not the best.

Can you find out more? It sure sounds interesting.

I agree with what Joan said. You would definitely have to a mineral
program that matches this feed, not a fixed formula mineral. ESC +
starch is iffy, but problem being that starch is digested 100% to
glucose. Alfalfa also has a high % of glucose than grass hays. Horses
well stabilized may tolerate it OK as a grain replacer but I suspect a
lot wouldn't as a complete feed/hay replacer unless the horse is
exercising.

I forwarded on the comments re:the feed (without attribution) to Brian Lamb, the developer of the feed. He has worked with two nutritionist in the development of the feed.

This is a brand new feed, still really being tinkered with. He has had it custom milled. Originally it was developed as a grain replacement for his growing horses. For them it was meant to be balanced with a "balancer" also developed by the company which was similar to Grow-N-Win. It then became of interest to owners of IR and Cushngs horses and a number of those horses are currently on the feed (with a balancer) and doing well . Fortification of the feed for older horses is meant to be different than for growing babies.

Brian would like to comment to the group re: questions in the letters. He is really trying to produce a high quality feed and welcomes questions, comments and suggestions.

I will forward his reply to the group.

It's actually very similar to Purina's new WellSolve line, right down
to the fat, sugar and starch. For a fragile IR horse, it would be
better with the wheat midds and added fat out of there.
