Thanks to all that answered- I was under the impression that ace
interferes with pergolide as it suppresses dopamine- so was looking for
something a little safer- if that exists,
Was there anything special used to "flush & polish" or just good old
warm water:)

I have owned quite a few geldings over the years. One
advantage to having an ex racehorse gelding is that
they frequently (all of mine) have been trained to
drop down for post race pee in the cup, so it is easy
to clean their sheaths. I rinse my boys' privates with
each bath/ hosing.

With one of my two who did not just let down (my last
guy would drop if you rubeed his belly), I could just
insert my arm with a wet cloth and clean. I originally
would have him sedated, but even when he was sedated
enough that he could barely stand, he would still try
and nail me. I was a pony clubber, so I had to find a
way (privates get checked at inspection to make sure
you are properly carrying for the horse). He got crazy
beans, and seemed to appreciate my help, he just
didn't want to let down.
The other guy had to be sedated, but I didn't work
much with him. We just did his sheath after his dental.

Um, you can give ace to male horses. Just don't want
to ship them or exercise them while they are still
under the effects of ace, because it relaxs the sheath
muscles and the penis is dropped. If the animal should
be exercised or have alot of movement, the swinging of
teh penis could cause damage.

This has happened because some folks give a ittle ace
to take the edge off for shipping, turnout, training.

Hi CA..I'll put my 2 cents in.
All 3 of my geldings get "everything" done at once...
Float, sheaths and annual vaccinations. They all get "ACE" and have
had no problems.
Horizon..my IR/laminitic/poss Cushings guy (17 yr old Arab) sometimes
needed a little "higher" dose because he is very very sensitive about
ANYONE touching his sheath. The float usually gets done first, then
the sheath.

He never had an enlarged or 'swollen" sheath until April/May of this
year. It's a little better since soaking hay and cutting out the
treats.But it definitely is not back to "normal". He has never had
any kind of discharge or bad smegma...only a "bean" or two....never
has had any urinating issues either.

I think because he always gets his sheath cleaned EVERY year..he
hasn't had any problems there. He's a pretty clean boy!

I am thinking I need to give Jack a very mild sedation to check his
sheath/penis- I have read the avoid file- so would like any
suggestions as to how to approach this.
Jack has previously had 2 small operations on his penis to remove
little growths(potentially Squamous Cell Carcinomas) pre diagniosis
to PPID/IR. He is very protective of his private bits now.

I need to give him a touch of something that will allow his penis to
drop to make sure there are no other lumps arising as he seems a bit
uncomortable in that region & I can smell a bit more build up of
smega.

This is hard to explain-He sort of looks like he wants to pee but
doesn't seem comfortable- but not uncomfortable either. Not like a
cystitis.There is no straining & he almost looks owie in his stance-
(except when he pees he has a slightly shaky back leg-he has never
stretched out like a normal gelding) his back leg still nearly shakes
but nothing happens.
On our walk tonight he kept on stopping- we didn't get very far. I
felt something wasn't right. He ate well enough tonight (no zn & cu )
another story- & there are pee patches in his yard.
I am trying to think ahead in case I need to do something on the
weekend.
He has previously had dandelion powder to help with the smegma & that
helped- but not sure how that fits in with his current regime. ie :
is it contraindicated with ginseng & not sure if that is the total
problem anyway.
Would appreciate any other thoughts on this
