This is a repost asking for help from a hay guru for my mineral
balancing. All e-mails to Dr. Kellon haven't been responded to. I
have my tested hay listed in the files under the pdf file EQ012375,
Karen/Illinois Teff Hay #2. AS I said before, I realize it shows a
high iron content, but I know this is due to dirt in the sample from
the farmer cutting this grass too low. I really need some help on what
to balance this hay out with. I've previously had mineral balancing
done through Dr. Kellon and then ordered through Uckele, mixing the
needed minerals with a flax seed base. I need to start feeding this
hay next week. My IR mare, Glory, also gets the following
supplements: Quiessence, 2 scoops; iodized salt, 2 tsp., Thyro-L,
Vitamin E, 1,000 mg. capsule; APF, chondroitin and HA. Please help!!

I know this is frustrating.
I'm just coming up for air and have to dash off again,but I wanted to
make a suggestion while you're waiting for one of us(not that I'm a
guroo!) to be able to help.
In the Files there is a fabulous set of both paper and pencil hay
balancing worksheets,and X-L worksheets,all thanks to Patti Kuvik.
Don't be too quick to say,"No way I can do that!!!" because
especially the paper and pencil sheets are absolutely step-by-step
clear ,and fully explained.
Hit the Resd Me First Sheets,stay calm,think positively and then grab
a pencil(mine always has an eraser)and paper,and your analysis,and
just slowly begin...oh ,and a calculator if you like.....filling in
the blanks according to what Patti asks for.
You will be very surprized at what you can do.
I know it's not what you want to hear,but maybe it'll make you feel
better while the rest of us are trying to get out from under??

I have a frustrating living/working situation right now. Most weeks I'm away from my horses during the week because of my work. Because of that, I have to feed round bales, free choice. That's why my hay choice becomes really important. Luckily both of my horses have gotten accustomed to this and pace themselves hay-wise really well. I pay a neighbor that lives about a mile away to come every evening I'm not there and give them their supplements, but there's no way she can come twice a day for hay feeding -- no matter what I could pay her. By this time next year, I won't have that situation and can be there full time, but until then I have to do my best this way. My IR mare is a Tennessee Walker, 15.2 hands, 1100 lb. Dr. Kellon was able to balance my minerals last year this way, so I'm hoping it can be done. Thanks in advance for whoever can help me! Karen & Glory in Illinois.

Granted, I'm no math wizard, but the worksheet has
confused me. Do I use "as fed" or "as sampled"? When
there's a blank to multiply it by lbs., what lbs. are
you to use? I'm definitely worksheet-challenged and

It's As Fed you want to use BTW. The pounds are the amount you are
feeding.

I really want to help you with this but with the really high Iron and
the really high Manganese, I think it is beyond my scope of knowledge.
I did read in Message 111004 that when high Iron hay is rinsed, the
iron can be greatly reduced, but in your case I guess that is not an
option. I know you said the high iron was a result of dirt because
the cutting was too low but doesn't that mean the horses are going to
be eating it anyway?
I did figure out if your horses are mantinaing their weight and are
not too fat or too thin than they are probably eating about 21 lbs of
hay a day. I based that on a 1000lb horse needing around 15 mcal/lb a
day & divided that by the Digestable Energy(DE) in your hay anaylsis
that was given as .73. It came out as 20.5 so thats about 21 lbs a day.

For the Major Minerals your Calcium and Potassium are ok and you just
need a little Magnesium (4 or 5 grams)which you can get from a scope
of Quiessence. Since you need the maximum of Sodium the horses will
eat (22 Grams)you should increase your salt to 2 oz (around 8 tsp.)

For the Trace Minerals you definitely need lots of Copper and Zinc.
Even ignoring the Iron balance, you need over 350 mg of copper and
over 1000 mg of Zinc to balance to the high Manganese. Recommending
that much is something I am not comfortable with and even if we did
manage to balance to the Manganese, is it really doing any good,
because the iron is still way out of whack...
Sorry I can't be more help but maybe someone will join in and give us
some help with this. I would love to know how others would solve
this.....

I would love to know too. I had sent these testing
results to Dr. Kellon early on and she wrote back and
indicated that she could work with the high iron
reading, that it wouldn't prevent me from feeding the
hay or balancing it, but then I never heard back from
her, even after repeated e-mails. I've read a lot of
other people are having the same problems contacting
her. Any additional input would be greatly
appreciated.

Karen - Was your hay this high in iron the past? (565 ppm) As for
the Manganese....mine just came back at 185.

It is really not known how much of this iron from dirt they absorb.

Going to look for your Case History now.

Could not find a Case History for Glory.

If you can do one for us (or point me to where it is) and send me what
you are currently feeding, including what Dr Kellon recommended last
year, we can figure this out. (Unless you'd rather wait for Dr K)

I have an iron overloaded horse, my hays are usually high in iron and
manganese so I can understand the problem.

Hi Why don't you get a huge hay net and put over your round hay bale?
You said the horses are good and not eating too much but you rather
had someone come and feed them hay twice a day. A horse is better off
eating all day so if you are even a little bit worried about the
amount they eat you can get a huge Goal net ( Squares should be around
2" by 2". That way they have a hard time getting mouthfuls out at one
time and they can eat for hours without eating too much. Here is a web
