how do you administer liquid pergolide?

martank71 <martankozlowska@...>

i'm wondering if folks found inventive ways of administering the
liquid without resorting to syringing every time.
my mare ate it w/ a cookie the other day. however, the cookie didn't
seem to absorb it well so i'd be afraid of using that particular
system on regular basis for fear of losing some pergolide in the
process. i just bought softer cookies (some kind of breakfast cookie
made by quaker) but have not tried it yet to see if it absorbs the
pergolide better.
thought i'd check w/ the folks on this board for ideas.

thanks!

Hi Marta,
Most of us dont use the liquid. It has too short a shelf life. With the capsules we can just plop them right in the bp.

I wonder why they opted to give me liquid...
I have 60 day supply of it.
I'll make sure to get capsules next time
What is the 'shelf life' of the liquid?

14 days for water base
30 days for oil base.

IF your vet will write a script for you many of us use Vet Pet Solutions 1-303-320-6034 or Pet Health 1-800-742-0516. The cost of the capsules are about 50 cents per mg ($15 a month) Our members have done follow up ACTH tests to see that the capsule/powder works. Read the files about pergolide. And check the Links (blue box on the left of the screen on the Cushings page) to see if your state requires your vet to write a script if he prescribes it in the first place. It'll be under "Prescriptions".

i have the oil based. how could they give me 60 day supply knowing
that its shelf life is 30 days?
is there some kind of a document that supports your statement that its
shelf life is only 30 days? i need it in order to confront the
pharmacist w/ it.

i spoke to the pharmacist who told me that they obtain their formula
from PCCA and that that formula (based on research performed by PCCA)
has a shelf life of 90 days.

i'm asking them to give me something in writing that confirms that.

any thoughts?

marta

martank71 <martankozlowska@...>

spoke to the pharmacist again.
confirmed 90 day shelf life.
but she also confirmed that capsules are more stable.
so i'm not sure why the vet prescribed liquid. maybe she thought it'd
be easier to administer? i think i'm going to go w/ capsules after
this batch is gone.

Marta, I haven't been on the board long but before I "got here" I spent
TWO YEARS treating (or so I thought) my horse with oil-susp Pergolide,
getting 90 days at a time per my vet's rx. My horse's condition and
soundness went up and down like a yo-yo, and it never occurred to me
that his meds weren't doing the job more than 30% of the time, I just
thought it was the disease. Then I met a group member, I got capsules,
and my horse is rebounding. Only two weeks on the caps but what a
difference. My vet, like yours, was *unaware* liquid Pergolide has
limited stability. She still might not believe, but the horse doesn't
lie. One thing I've learned since I joined the group is not to assume
your vet knows more than you do about EC/IR, and that you need to be
prepared to advocate for your horse. The information here lets you do
that.

Hi Marta,
I got my first batch of LIQUID pergolide before I found this group. It sat - unused - in my refrigerator until I threw it out. I found this group and went straight to capsules. Kissed that $100 bottle good by, especially because Peanut was diagnosed a year ago and during the seasonal rise I felt I should do everything I could as fast as I could and to the best of my abilities. I skipped a few other things I needed, but I felt HE needed it more and he was in trouble. Just my own personal experience, and I am sharing it with you. My vet did not prescribe the liquid, but sold it directly to me. I then got another script from my other vet for capsules.I have a couple of vets that I work closely with and have worked very hard at nurturing relationships with them so they are willing to work with me. I do dog rescue too, so for me, personally, I find it most useful for all of my critters to have a few close relationships with more than one vet. I sure have enough animals to support all th
e vets around here too!

I don¹t think the vets know about the capsules. I¹ve been buying pergolide
for over way too many years and the compounded suspension is what every vet
has prescribed. The only pills I¹ve used were for the branded Permax that I
had to buy from Canada (I¹m in Massachusetts) due to the exorbitant price
here and they were still outrageous in price. I always worried how much of
the actual drug was getting into Jeeps when I administered the liquid.
Recently I started using SmartPak¹s powder figured if her feed tub was
licked clean she was getting all.

I joined this group and I have my capsules. I can¹t wait to start giving
them to Jeepers. Have a couple weeks supply of the powder to go through and
it is like gold dust in comparison $$$$ so I plan on using that up before
switching to the pills. The other piece I like about the pills is that no
one can mess up the dosage. No measuring.

Thanks group!

Jamie

Claudia,
The main page of the Cushings list has a pale blue box on the left side of
your computer screen. Do you see where it says Messages, Post, Files, Photos,
Links, Database......its the first page with the picture of Robin jumping her mare.
What exactly are you looking for?

Interesting. I just started my mare on Pergolide and my vet gives the liquid
which gives a three month + shelf life. Hmmmmmmm. It was $90 for one month!
They are in the process (well, the lady at the front desk) of finding a more
affordable source. I sent her the Vet Pet information in hopes of benefiting
all the locals users.

My last resort is that my medical doctor who is also a close friend said he
would write a script for me (as in me, personally) to fill at our local
pharmacy. I would then only pay my 10 or 20 dollar co-pay. Anyone else ever
do this?

As for giving the liquid, I use a 1X1 square of good whole grain bread and
it soaks in well. My mare thinks she is having the biggest treat! Ha!

Unfortunately, Linda, Pergolide is no longer available for human consumption, so even if he did write it, I doubt your insurance company would pay for it without question. Not to mention that you probably shouldn't be telling a public list that information about your doctor!

Also, Pergolide(permax)is no longer prescribed for human use due to
a high incidence of heart valve damage to humans. See the following
press release.

Perryc03-29-2007, 04:58 PM
The FDA issued the following announcement this afternoon. While
removal of a drug from the market, especially after 20 years, is
unusual, in this case the evidence supports this action. Many
doctors have already been getting their patients off the drug, which
has been associated with dangerous heart valve problems in recently
published studies. Much to its credit, The FDA credit has sought the
advice of patients in making this decision and in communications
with the PD community.

Perry Cohen
Parkinson Pipeline Project
FDA Patient Representative

Dear Colleague:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that
manufacturers of pergolide drug products, which are used to treat
Parkinson's disease, will voluntarily remove these drugs from the
market because of the risk of serious damage to patients' heart
valves. FDA has issued a Public Health Advisory detailing the
removal of pergolide products from the market.

The products being withdrawn are Permax, the trade name for
pergolide marketed by Valeant Pharmaceuticals, and two generic
versions of pergolide manufactured Par and Teva. Pergolide is in a
class of medications called dopamine agonists and is used with
levodopa and carbidopa to manage the symptoms (tremors and slowness
of movement) of Parkinson's disease.

In 2006, an estimated 12,000 patients received prescriptions for
pergolide from retail pharmacies in the United States. Patients
taking pergolide should contact their doctors to discuss alternate
treatments. Patients should not stop taking the medication, as
stopping pergolide abruptly can be dangerous.

There are alternative therapies available for Parkinson's disease,
including three other dopamine agonists that have not been
associated with valvular heart disease. The removal of pergolide
products is not expected to adversely affect patient care because of
the alternative therapies available.

For additional information, the press release and links to the
Public Health are available at
http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01596.html.

I can't imagine your doctor "friend" doesn't know this. Attempting
to write a Rx for it for you would be a giant red flag to the
pharmacist(who would have every right and duty to report this) and
your insurance would most certainly deny it if it ever got that far.

Thanks, that is all good to know. I was just looking for a more affordable
way since my vet office didn't seem to think much of the idea of writing a
script for it. And they are the only show in town - or even close to town!
