ARGH! I absolutely HATE pergolide!!

psweetpadrona

This is the 2nd time I've tried to put my mare on pergolide and it is NOT working out. I hate this drug!

The first time she was on it for about 2 weeks - at 1 mg. per day and she got slower, more depressed, and eventually went totally off her feed then laid down for 3 days and wouldn't eat/drink/get up. I took her off the drug, and she slowly returned to normal.

This year my vet strongly suggested I get her back on it. Ok, so I started her at 1/4 mg. to try to SLOWLY get her back on it without the side effects. Also did 6ml. of APF daily.

She had a bizarre neurological reaction after a few days (shaking, panicky, screaming to herd members, frantically smelling the air around her, etc.) so I decreased the dose to 1/8 mg. for a few days, then back up to 1/4, then 1/2 and now back to 1 mg.

She's been on the 1 mg. for less than a week and for 2 days now she has been lethargic, slow, depressed, and WON'T EAT OR DRINK. So based on past experience, the next step is for her to lay down and wait to die.

I HATE THIS STUPID DRUG. I'm going to take her off of it AGAIN and just take our chances with the Cushings I guess.

I had to quit the APF because she's on Dr. Kellon's treatment for DSLD and I cannot give adaptogenic herbs along with it.

Now she's so depressed and off her feed that she won't even eat the tiny handfull of pellets with the DSLD herbs on it so now I'm having to syringe it which she hates.

So who else has horses that just could NOT be on pergolide????? Honestly I've tried. And I'm done with it. I am so sick of this I could scream.

Have you tried chaste tree berry? I used it for 8+ years before introducing Pergolide. Saw no side effects at all with CTB and it resolved the un-shedding, patchy coat and other symptoms within the first year of use.

I use a human pituitary supplement, and my horse is doing great with it.

He did not do well at all with Pergolide.

I also use the human pituitary supplement for my 2 cushings( 1 horse and 1 pony). They are doing very well. I could not believe how nicely the older (26) of the 2 shed out this year. Even better than the others without cushings.

What are these supplements? I am having Ellie tested this week and if she is Cushings, then I would perfer to use a supplement and not a drug if possible. Thanks, candy

Please could you tell me how much the dosage of chaste berry you gave, I am
giving my mare chasteberry, but thinking it maybe not enough, would prefer
this before peroglide. She is 15.2 hanoverian/thoroughbred, not too over
weight.

My horse is about 1100 lbs. Over the high ACTH months I give him 4, which is
about Oc

tober through April, then I give him 3.

He has been on it now for 2 years and doing great on it. I even get the
weight off him, and being IR this is crucial.

So it increases the function of the pituitary gland? Or suppresses it? Considering the PPID type pituitary is *overactive* by tumor or hyperplasia, how does this supplement help with PPID?

Have you monitored ACTH values?

Hi Heike,

Wonderful to hear that your horse is doing great. I was wondering if you would mind sharing you latest ACTH or Insulin test results?
I think knowing the numbers you started with and then seeing the new improved numbers would help others make informed decisions regarding treatment for their Cushings horses.

I have no idea how it works, what it does.

I do not monitor his blood levels, I just go by the way he acts.

When his hormone spikes he gets more nervous and uptight, and the one more
pill takes care of that.

I really had no choice but trying it. The chaste berry did nothing for him,
and the Pergolide made him really sick. He was a sad sight. A human
chiro/nutritionist recommended it to. He also has horses.

On this stuff, he is totally himself and doing well. What more can I ask
for.

If it was not so bothersome and expensive, I would do the blood work just
out of curiosity. Maybe some day.

I also have my other IR horse, who had low thyroid, on the Thyroid
supplement from this company. It works well also. He is perkier than he was
and is also able to lose weight. I tried the Thyro-L, it did not seem to do
much, but within 2 weeks his sheath was totally yucky. The same had happened
to another horse of mine. I don’t know why, but omit the Thyro-L, and the
sheath goes back to normal.

All this is totally unscientific, but my boys approve.

I take this companies thyroid supplement for myself. Dr. David Brownstein is my holistic doctor and based on my symptoms, (the blood test showed nothing wrong with my thyroid) but because of my symptoms he started me on the Biotics Research supplement that treats low thyroid symptoms. I have been taking this for a while now and feel great. I may after having Ellie's bloodwork done put her on this supplement as I have thought about it and I really suspect a low thyroid issue with her.

Glad that this is working for your horse Heike.

Are there any issues with giving animal derived ingredients to vegetarian animals (horses)? The product you are giving has Lamb Pituitary/Hypothalamus. I know that Thyro-L is also from animals (Cows) - and wouldn't want to feed that either. Is it safe?

I don’t know, time will tell. I had the same misgivings, but really no other
choice.

Hi Vicky,

A close friend of mine at my request and after consulting with her vet gave her mare pergolide. She went from bad to worse they almost put her down. She pulled her off of the drug immediately and her horse began to recover.

This drug has helped thousands mine included. I have not been a big fan of using drugs but it was a last resort.
It does not always work for all as in your case. Sometimes you need to step backwards and only implement one thing at a time so you know which one is working or not.

I hope things get better for you and your horse.
