ODTB cubes/availability

Elva J Mico

I may be posting in the wrong place and this might be better moved to the other sister list but since I had originally posted here I wanted to let ppl know that I believe I have found another store to carry the balanced cubes for me. I did appreciate all the replies and help when this all happened.

Aurelio did contact me and I answered him but haven't heard from him since so I don't know if he had anything to do with this new source or not. But if he did I would like to thank him.

Since this is the second time this feed store has done this to my horses, I contacted another feed store that carries TC. They are going to get the balanced cubes for me, but it will be next Wednesday before they have them in store. Apparently they are brought to Texas from Oklahoma and this store makes a weekly trip to Texas for feed. So next Monday the truck goes to Texas, back on Tuesday and delivered to me on Wednesday.

I have four bags left and am working on ways to make them last until next Wednesday. I am giving Whiskey some Standlee cubes for 2 of his meals of the day, and also adding some of the Safe Starch Forage (TC). He is not as sensitive as Beau, I hope.....and sure hope with this he does not develop a sensitivity. Beau can't take any extra fat or sugar. Even extra herbs will throw him off. Both horses are IR and Cushings.

One other thing that has cropped up is that in the past 2-3 months Beau's coat has turned from black to brown on his body. He almost looks like he is sun faded but has not sun faded in the past. Any ideas on what would cause this?

Thanks for the advice and suggestions. BTW, the reason I don't want to stay with the Standlee cubes is that the Ontario Dehy cubes are my horses main diet and the Standlee cubes are not balanced.

Hi Elva, How's his copper? Somewhere I think I read that low copper could cause that fading look. Could you feed a little extra r/s/r beet pulp with the standlee hay to keep it really low s/s while you're stretching the ODTBCs?

Yes, I've read that low copper can be responsible for changes in the coat color also, but he only and always gets the balanced cubes and they should be properly balanced so I am not sure I should add more copper.

I see that you also have a Beau. My Beau is a black, Tennessee Walker. Well, used to be black and he is 14 years old. Boy, that is such a good idea....and darn, I am on oxygen right now, my second case of pneumonia so I am trying to stay indoors and have other people do the feeding for me. I don't want to take advantage of the few I have helping out and hate to ask them to rinse. The molasses "free" beet pulp I have has to be rinsed 7 or 8 times before the water runs clear.....but maybe I can figure out how to do that....got to put on the thinking cap. I ruined one washer cleaning it in that and had to buy a new one....but maybe I could do it just 3 or 4 times to get some beet pulp to use for this week. Thanks for the suggestions!

Elva, My Beau is a black Gypsy. They'd look cute together! I'm recovering from hip replacement and my husband is doing the feeding regimen. Chappie is my IR boy and is down to just 1lb. of beet pulp/day,and 4lbs ODTBCs plus his hay , but I just do the beet pulp in batches in a big tupperware in the kitchen. (my kitchen is beet pulp r/s/r and hay cube moistening central.) I use a strainer, spoon in a bunch after soaking, rinse it ,put it in another tupperware with the moistened cubes and then out to the barn to feed along with his hay. Could you do the rinsing part in small batches while on the oxygen, then your helper could do the outdoor part? It's hard to be laid up. ( I think my worsening hip in 2010 & 2011 and not being able to ride much contributed to Chappie's IR) I hope you're better soon.

Elva,

Doesn't mean you might not need to add some.

Dr. K suggested a friend of mine do it a while back. Horse is on ODTB cubes exclusively and had coat issues.

When she suggested that I add copper, she also had me add zinc.

High iron or sulfate in your water, or iron overload, may increase the requirement. May also need more zinc with black horses.

I will do that Dr. Kellon. Thank you for the information. I'd love having my little black horse back.
