the difference was so important. Oh well, live and learn is what we
do on this list,
right? Yes, the #603 is wet chemistry and is the one you want.

When getting our hay tests done by equi-analytical, I have always used the 601. Is the 603 wet chemistry? Since this is what Dr. Kellon recommends, just want to be sure I get the correct one.
Thanks!

Can I ask a favor Peggy? Can you load a pdf copy of your hay test into your folder? I'm on a MAC and it's just easier to read.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Peggy

Thanks for your patience and the link to all the good info. We're a bit short handed and lots going on. I can look over your info but won't get to it until over the weekend. If that's okay, just hang tight and I'll get back. You're doing great!

Oh sorry, didn't realize you had posted both. I will check. I'm
almost through with the current #601 tested hay, and will get
the #603 next time anyway, but was curious. Thanks!

This is from Dr. Kellon a post that I saved.
"Bottom line is that with high risk horses, like IR, always go with wet chemistry.

One thing not emphasized in that article is that for each type of forage it takes 10,000+ samples compared to wet chemistry to create all the equations that cover all the bases.

NIR testing is not officially approved for ESC, starch or trace minerals, even if a lab is NIR certified. These are way too important to take a chance in a high risk horse."

There is a definite difference between what #601 test
shows compared to what #603 test shows.

Hi Ferne,
Are you able to get to my history folder? I posted both in there. Basically, everything was lower with the #601 test except moisture%, dry matter%, CP, estimated Lysine, ADF, Zinc, copper and Molybdenum for me. The #601 test includes crude fat and ash that the 603 test doesn't even show.

Could you tell us what the differences were? I did the #601 test
when I bought my hay probe back in November and am curious.
Mainly concerned about esc and starch, but curious about the
trace minerals also.

Now why didn't I thing to use that search functionality that way :/
THANK YOU Lorna!
I'm going to go ahead and get the #603 done as well...Sigh. Really wish they would have gotten back to me. I thought the sample would take longer to got through the mail than it did! Oh well, live and learn.

Do I need to get the #603 test done on top of the #601 test? According to Chris at Dairy One (Equi-analytical) " numbers compare really well and are very accurate."

I think this question got lost in the shuffle of other things being asked and answered.
Can anyone give me an answer to this one? Do I need to get the #603 test done on top of the #601 test? According to Chris at Dairy One (Equi-analytical) " numbers compare really well and are very accurate."

If so, I need to let Chris know why they still have a ready sample.

If not, can somebody help me figure out what custom supplements my horse needs?

Thanks!

I just got my results back from Dairy One and because of the purchase of the probe, they gave me a complimentary #601. I had a call into them to see if I could make that a credit towards #603 but I never recv'd a response back and two days after that phone call, I just got my results in the email. Why the request for #603 instead of #601? What are the differences? Can my hay still be balanced with the #601 testing?

Another question, do I need to include my case history link every time I sign?

Yes,please ,Peggy.

We have ,as of last evening,10,146 members here.
It makes it so much easier for people answering questions if they have the pertinent information in front of them, without having to dig for it.Or,ahem, rely on memory.
It *could* mean the difference between receiving a quick answer, and not.

Thanks!

I forgot to say this is a new load of hay so I had enough to make it worthwhile to test it.
This is my first time testing using Equi-analytical and I hope to finally get her diet and supplements balanced better!

I've added a link to my history.
I don't really know when I joined this list but Nowee was experiencing lameness in June 2010 but didn't get blood tested until until May of 2011. I filled out and uploaded her history in June 2011.

Hope that helps some.
