Need Help - Hoof Pics

Hi,
I am new to the group and would appreciate any help with my possibly IR horse with laminitis. I am still trying to figure out how to create a history file, but here is some background. Doc is a 14 y/o TB training level event horse. He has been barefoot for 5 years, I have trimmed him myself (long story). I moved to a boarding barn in June and he was put on essentials K (soy based) ration balancer. He started gaining weight on it. In early December he had a viral infection (low grade fever, extreme muscle soreness, swollen sheath, cough) that lasted about a week, then he developed laminitis. Initially he was sore only on right front, then sore to walk in stall, but stood normally. Initial x rays showed no rotation. Xrays in January showed rotation. Initial insulin result was 100 (NL 10-30, he was painful, and the lab it was sent to came back with high insulins on 2 other horses (243 and >300). Insulins were repeated 2 weeks later on all 3 at a different lab, all came back normal, Doc was 25, not fasting, eating hay (NL 5-25). I am waiting for results from Cornell on insulin, thyroid panel, ACTH and Lepetin. Vet prescribed Thyro L, Pergolide (just in case), bute, gastrogard. I have two batches of grass hay, tested both at Dairy one (ESC, Starch 4.0, 0.7 and 5.7, 0.1) He is eating the 1st batch. I stopped the ration balancer, am trying to get him to eat the ODTB cubes, but he hates wet or soaked food. He will not eat beet pulp. He is getting KER IR pellets and hay with a magnesium, selenium, vitamin e, and chromium supplement my trimmer's vet - an endocrine specialist?- said to put him on. It is in a flax base. He has lost the weight he put on on the essentials k. Sheath swelling went down about 4 weeks after he was sick. Over the last 3-4 weeks, he has become more sore, standing less under himself. He has also not been trimmed since early November, my trimmer says he does need to be trimmed yet. I am desperate to try to help him. I have posted photos in an album "Doctor". I would very much appreciate any help or ideas you may have. Here is a link (I hope) to his pictures: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EquineCushings/photos/album/1727978592/pic/list Thank you! I am surprised that your horse has not been trimmed since November. My
Cushing's horse Doc has to have his feet trimmed every 4 weeks or he is a lot of toe to the point where he starts to stumble on it. Every time Doc has a swollen sheath I find out someone has given him hay or treats. I now have a 12 inch stop sign on his stall with the words "No treats or hay - Cushing's). That helps. I now have a 12 inch stop sign on his stall with the words "No
treats or hay - Cushing's). That helps.Add a shotgun, and a credit card that says *Your Name Here*. Shotgun is obvious. Credit card, the vet bills that person can incur. Linda EC Primary Response West Coast May 2004 |
