Other forms of Zn and Cu [Was: Other forms of magnesium]

Dr. Kellon, Do you have any specifics on other minerals, such as forms of Zinc and Copper, as far as their bioavailability/absorption by horses? I stopped using HorseTech's poly zinc and copper because my horse seemed to object to them. I'm using their amino acid chelates in my custom mix now, but I see they don't list those as available separately now... maybe they are out of them. In any case, what other (inorganic) forms of zinc and copper could I try that might be more palatable for my mare?

Thanks, Lisanne and Lacey

We also know that proteinates and chelates of other minerals are not better absorbed by horses. In fact, some studies have found better absorption with the inorganic minerals.

Thanks, Lorna. Where do you purchase the zinc and copper sulfates?

My feed store gets it for me.

Did your horse eat these sulfate forms well? Did you taste them?? It looks like a sensitive gram scale would be necessary to measure correct amounts, since they'd be small.

Thanks,

If this is for me, I feed the sulphates no problem.

I've not tasted them, but if you mean they taste dreadful and did I know that? Yes,I know that.It depends on how much one has to feed.
There will be a tolerance level for every horse.Copper and zinc are not their favourites.
But I'd add, also, that horses frequently don't mind items that we wouldn't be happy to eat.I top dress with Mov-Ease ,for example.Bitter,bitter,bitter.
Horses frequently like bitter tastes,but I don't.

You need a gram scale,yes.
