Thank you everyone for your thoughts and help. Problem with hay analysis is that I buy hay from different suppliers as my previous supplier was sadly killed earlier in the year - I get it from where ever I can. Once I've stablished a regular supplier again I'll get an anylysis done.

So this is a specific version of the Ultimate Balancer? It seems to me that it is not commercially available? You have to demand for it specifically? Is it internationally available? I found lots of info about this balancer, but then it isn't called formula 2. And then there is no mention of it being fe free, only sugar and starch free. Thank you. Equimins Advanced Concentrate Metabalance formula 2 is iron free and formulated for UK forages with input from graduates of my NRC Plus nutrition course. Until you can get a hay analysis, that's what I would use.

D&H 'Daily Vits&Mins' has 2000mg/kg iron, which would make it a bad choice in my book.

Hi Lesley, Ultimate Balancer is too much of a good thing for an IR horse - if you would have called the help line of D&H ( really nice people and knowledgable) they would have told you that. If you want to stick to D&H as a brand, their 'Daily Vits&Mins' would be the product to opt for when you want to be sure your horse gets a good level of vitamins and minerals. Another good product would be Formula4Feet by Equilife. Ofcourse, according to the policy on this message board, the best way to go about it, is to have your hay tested and have a supplement made based on the outcome of the test. I would keep him on the emergency diet until you get your hay tested, and then balance to the hay.

After stopping feeding Top Spec Anti Lam balancer (because people said it was full of sugar) I started making a simple feed of chaff with a scoop hedgerow herbs, scoop of seaweed & teaspoon of magnesium. Trouble is he either got bored of it or didn't like the taste as he'd leave most of it! He has a salt link in the stable and also a mineral lick which he doesn't touch! Once we've got him sorted I hope to get him back to full fitness as a competitive carraige driving pony so he will need a fair bit of energy & will need to feed his muscles!!
