laminitis flare up...no reason..??

bigwhitevan2002

I will attempt to make this short and to the point, I cannot even attempt to post my case history it has been years since I have plugged into the group, a good thing as this means my pony has been doing great, a bit guilty that I no longer contribute.
if anyone rememberrs me ....

Pony is  30+ year old shetland, IR no cushings( diagnosed was tested ), been IR for 10 years, was kept on the sterrets/midvalley feed exclusivly until I was no longer able to attain it, then switched to LMF low carb complete, been on this exclusivily for 2+ years, no problem, taped Muzzle pasture turn out in august/septmeber , no problems ..
been the picture of health would never know how old she is...spunky, healthy , shiney etc...

for the past 3 months she has had off and on heat and soreness, she has no access to anything other than her complete feed and some alfalfa cubes as treats. she is barefoot trimmed every 6 weeks..

she gets Beet pulp to carry her magOx, Chasteberry powder, and flax ,
she has no access to any other feed, is kept in doors in a large stall 20X10  this winter . no  outside turnout weather is gross but arena turn out and walks when weather permits and she can walk comfortably.

I have no idea why we are having such flare ups...BO called this morning and said she can hardly walk and has hot fronts..What on EARTH?

Our weather has been just plain stupid, for the pacific NW very cold for us snow ice rain could this cause all of this , I just cant think of anything I am doing wrong, or need to fix, ....?

Thanks for any advice ideas or a quick note of support for the prodigal member.

Hi again Nancy,

ummm. sheepish grin,Just pulled out my paperwork..

she was last tested for PPID in september 2007 , ACTH 35 Reference range 9-35 , we attributed to seasonal high,

No problems since then no blood work either, no flares proper shedding in summer..etc...

Ummm. now the problem seems kind of obvious.

UGH>>>

thought I had dodged that bullet ,

so are we thinking I need to do the obvious and test ACTH go from there...( just slap me upside the head)

no escuses for this delinquincy except life, and she has been the picture of perfection for years..

any how, thinking the next course of action is to have the Vet out to pull some blood , will go back in the files and re familar myself with proper protocol on such...is pergolide still the deal??? so much to catch up on I guess.thought chasteberry would give her a boost just started her on it about a month ago.

okay went through all past messages and found all my paper work......here goes

2006 attained pony free because she was unwanted an lame

2007 told she was cronic founder and keep her off pasture and feed small amounts of local hay.

2007 discovered EC group.got educated started protocol

2007-diet of soaked hay , mag/ox , minerals balanced by the balance babes

2008 fed only sterrets/midvally grass hay pellets and minerals.

2011 lost the sterrets switched to triple crown safe starch .. ... reacted with soreness and heat..

2011 soaking hay again until something can be found.

2012 switch to LMF low carb complete ,,,no reaction does very well on it fed only LMF up to this point with mag/ox and flax.

BLOOD WORK

November 2006

insulin 266 ...ref range 29-179 pmol/L

glucose 85....ref range 75-115 mg/dl

September 2007

insulin 131 ref range 29-179 pmol/L

glucose 3.1  ref range 4.2-6.4 mmol/L

ACTH 35 ref range 9-35  pg/ml

march 2010

insulin 1619 ref range < 300 pmol/L             Pony was in acute laminitis attack , very little rotation, found out nice people were feeding her all

glucose 5.4  ref range  4.3-6.9 mmol/L        sorts of treats and goodies , vet put her on thyrol/L for 4 months and as I read the report he put her on

ACTH    4.1  ref range 2.0-10.0 pmol/L         pergolide .5 mg which i do not remember ever getting or administering ?? tho looking at this now

probably because I knew the problem was neighbors not cushings..

that was the last problems we had with her she has been the picture of health until the last 2-3 months no diet change , we did let her on pasture taped muzzle a lot this summer, and tossed her hay every now and then ( untested) just because she likes it  stopped that practice in october at the first sign of soreness , ..

QUESTION..why the  big difference in her ACTH from 2007 to 2010..?? seasonal high?

I hope this is okay in leiu of a case history, I wrote it twice because I accidently deleted it the first time trying to fix spelling errors, will not try to fix errors this time so as not to make same mistake.

any suggestions , Ideas etc are greatly appreciated.

>I hope this is okay in leiu of a case history,

Hi Julie,

Good work.
The thing is that without all your information in a case history it will not be readily available for the volunteers to study. It will remain in this message and soon become lost, unless a volunteer has the time needed to search for it.
The other thing is that the information in a case history is far easier to read/follow ,than it is in paragraph form.

Please try to find the time to fill out a CH,and then add its link to your signature. Then anyone needing to see it can go directly there.

Hi Julie,

Here are three links to case histories you had posted when the Sporthorse histories were active:

http://wayback.archive.org/web/20100119142414/http://www.sportshorses.com/cases/bigwhitevan2002.LilBritches.htm

http://wayback.archive.org/web/20100124043017/http://www.sportshorses.com/cases/bigwhitevan2002@...

http://wayback.archive.org/web/20100119092954/http://www.sportshorses.com/cases/bigwhitevan2002@...

This is the link for the Wayback Archives where the case histories are located:

http://wayback.archive.org/web/*/http://www.sportshorses.com/cases/*

We recommend you download the case history from Wayback as what is available there changes regularly and you may not be able to find the info in the future. This is where many, tho not all, of the histories that were located in the original SportHorse site can be found. If you check there and don't find your hoistory, please retry periodically as the info changes and case histories seem to appear and disappear.

Hi Julie,

Well that's weird. When I click on the specific link for each history it takes me to that history. Do you go to the Wayback Archives on the Archives link?

Hi Julie,

You're welcome.

Not your fault. The Wayback can be odd to use. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I'm sure someone smarter with computers could tell us why but I just wait and retry at another time and it usually works eventually.
