Red cell

Kc <karenclarinet@...>

Hi all,
My regular vets new partner asked me directly if I was giving the red cell as she told me to.
I had to say 'no' and then started to say that real anemia was rare in horses and there was usually an imbalance...and then got stuck...
Please help me back this up.
And
Please help me with what I can do for my horse with low RBC (as well as low WBC).
Many thanks,
Karen and Serrano, sept 2012, calif

Hi Karen,

I did a search
Anemia.
There are a lot of messages about anemia in horses, but this is one from Dr. Kellon:

"Unless the iron deficiency was diagnosed through a blood screen at Kansas State including serum iron, transferrin and ferritin, you can't diagnose iron deficiency. Anemia in adult horses is rarely, if ever, iron deficiency. If it was the MCV and MCHC would be low.

Anemia of chronic disease, which is a bone marrow suppression, is the most common cause of anemia in C/IR horses. It's usually mild and does not need to be treated. Oxidative stress from inadequate mineral and vitamin (E) supplementation may also play a role."

Entire message is number 157824.

I would also appreciate seeing answers to this question.  My present visit to the site is to find info on anemia.  My horse Leif has low RBC, HGB, HCT, & P UCV counts. This was from his labs drawn in January. So far the only suggestion from his vet at UF is to start him on Pergolide.  I'm not convinced this is the solution as his ACTH and glucose/insulin are currently within normal ranges - this has been accomplished via diet and exercise management.  Unfortunately, the anemia is still problematic.  I started him on APF Pro a couple of months ago, but his energy level is still low.  Blood draw is scheduled for this coming Friday.

Francine,

Do you have a hard copy of the lab work ( thinking it is a CBC ) to post in your case history?  That would be helpful  in order to better assist you with your question.

What tests are being done on Friday?

Susan, I have better than a hard copy, I have digital that I can post. I'm just not sure how/where? I have all of his labs.  Friday will be another CBC to check the anemia.  I only have the ACTH and glucose/insulin done once/year.  The draw is done by the University of Florida and sent to Michigan State.  If you can give me some directions on how to post his lab results, I'll do it right now!

Go ahead and put the lab results in your case history file.
Include the case history link in your post for easy access....thanks.

Ugh . . . really am trying to figure out "how" to setup a case history.  I have the form filled out, I have his labs, available - I just can't figure out where/how to upload?
