California Trace Plus

Stephanie Stout

Hi All,

I just did a search on this, and didn't get much(but it might be the operator here). Does anyone here use CA Trace Plus for their IR & PPID horse? Is CA Trace Plus safe for IR(with previous rotation)? I know that the hay needs to be balanced, but wondering if it will at least help since I don't have the finances(lots and lots of vet bills) to have someone balance it right now. King's currently getting R/S/R beet pulp, some soaked ODTB cubes, and flax/salt plus low sugar/starch grass hay. Cushings controlled with 4.5mg of Pergolide and IR was tested last within the 'normal' range from Cornell.

Thanks all!

Stephanie

I suggest you contact California Trace directly to ask Sally Hugg the question. She's very responsive to questions. I've never seen ESC + Starch on California Trace Plus and would like to know the answer myself.

FWIW, Uckele Equine's U-Balance Foundation is an alternative that covers not only trace minerals but also major minerals. It's palatable, at least to my non-picky mares who ate it right out of my hand. It's comparable in cost to California Trace Plus. http://equine.uckele.com/u-balance-foundation.html  If you ask an ECIR balancer to look at your hay analysis and factor in U-Balalnce Foundation, you might find that it's a good fit with minimal tweaking.

I trial-balanced a couple of my orchard grass hays using U-Balance Foundation fed at one ounce per day.  It did a reasonable job of balancing horses from 850 lbs to 1100 pounds. You will still want to add a few things for tightly balanced minerals. How far it is from ideal will depend on your hay.

I have used Cal Trace for years when I could not keep a large amount of hay to test, its better in the trace minerals then anything commercially produced, my PPID, IR horses did fine with it, and it was pretty cost effective, I did notice a difference in using the Cal Trace over a commercial supplement.

I am back to a custom mix again but wouldn't hesitate to go back to cal trace if i needed to
I live in Oregon and feed local hays.It balances them pretty well

Hi Everyone,

@Lorna, I lost my CH when my computer crashed so I don't have one to post until I can fill it all out again. I can answer any questions if you need!

I contacted CA Trace(Sally) and heard back about the ESC and Starch values if anyone is interested. The California Trace Plus has "Per Equi-analytical, each 4 ounce serving of CA Trace PLUS contains: ESC  8.7 grams, Starch 7.5 grams".

I know this is high for an IR horse so I'm thinking that it's not safe. So, does anyone have another mineral supplement they use? I know the perfect situation is to get the hay balanced but I just can't do that right now so trying to find something that will help for now.

Thanks!

Stephanie,

Did you ask  about the ESC and starch content in regular  Cal Trace? It might be lower than  Cal Trace Plus. I used regular Cal Trace for a few years when my hay supply varied, and it wasn't feasible to  get a custom-balanced mineral mix

What part of Oregon are you in?

Hi Stephanie -

Since no one responded to your question, I wanted to point out that the total amount of ESC (8.7 g) and starch (7.5 grams) in a serving of California Trace PLUS, is actually lower than the ESC and starch contained in 1/2 pound of Triple Crown Lite (ESC 10.8 g, starch 10.2 g) per their website, and comparable to 1/2 pound of NuZu Stabul 1 (ESC 5.1 g, starch 10.3 g) per the analysis in the files, which many members use as a carrier for their supplements.

Sally, When I double checked on the Triple Crown Site, they show TC Lite as 4.5% Starch & ESC of 4.8% for a total of 9.3.  I could not find details on the NuZu site, but at the bottom of the blurb, it says that Stabul 1 is less than 10% ESC & starch per EquiAnalytical...  Where did you find your information?

Hi Ferne -

There is a E/A analysis for NuZu Stabul1 contributed by Jan Monstad in the files. If you go to the files section and type NuZu in the search box it should come up.

If you go back and reread the previous messages, the discussion was about the actual grams of ESC and starch provided by a certain size serving, which in the case of supplements is often very small. I took the percentages from the Triple Crown website and converted them to the actual grams supplied by the amount that is commonly fed when people use it as a carrier for supplements.

Thanks Sally!  Science is not my strong point, so I thought there must be some reason you talked about grams, but didn't understand how they related to %...  Thanks for the info.  I was just ready to start my guys on California Trace again, because I need to get a smaller amount of hay just to last me until the regular hay season...  I "think" I understand now.

>>Does anyone here use CA Trace Plus for their IR & PPID horse? Is CA Trace Plus safe for IR

Since I have been a long time user of CA Trace and CA Trace PLUS, I will chime in and hope it provides additional reassurance. My 23 yo IR Morgan mare had been on the original CA Trace powder, and since her PPID diagnosis in Feb. 2014, the CA Trace PLUS powder.
I originally started her on it a decade ago when I took her barefoot and wanted to give her really good hoof support. I strongly suspect that she has maintained very strong hooves, in large part, due to having this supplement long term. Despite IR and PPID, she has not suffered laminits and comfortably travels barefoot over most trails.
I, too, do not have the ability to buy hay in large quantities and test, so I have relied on this to provide the trace mineral content needed. It has worked well for me here in California where it compensates for regional insufficiencies. It has not posed any detectable challenges to my mare's insulin or glucose levels.
