Flaxseed oil instead of ground flax

Michele Cameron

Just an FYI regarding buying ground flax...Many years ago, I switched from whole flax to buying pre-ground/non stabilized flax & I fed it to my Standardbred  , not knowing it was rancid... He began having a twitching in his shoulder muscle which over the course of a couple of weeks became a major dysfunction... eventually a friend inspected my feed and she could tell by the smell that the flax was "mildly" off.... We discontinued using it and in a week he was better. After that though he could not tolerate any flax at all, even fresh ground or whole, so be careful to follow the directions for keeping it, and learn what good flax smells like.

Hi Sally,

The amount of flax/flax oil being fed is for the supplementation of omega 3's and has no correlation to the amount of vit E needed on a daily basis. If using a powdered vit E source, you could mix it into the flax oil instead of another type of oil before feeding.

The amount of vit E needed for maintenance is 1000iu per 500lbs body weight. We recommend using gelcaps with oil in them to make it simpler than having to mix other forms into an oil to assure proper absorption.

Linseed meal is a good source of protein but not appropriate for an IR horse. If your diet is low on protein, whey protein isolate is a much better alternative. The omega 3's are what would be helpful for coat but those have been removed from linseed meal.

If using flax oil instead of ground flax, would it be safe to cut back on the suggested amount of Vitamin E capsules in oil that are being fed per ECIR recommendations?

Also, does Linseed Meal have a place in the diet of an IR horse?  On the Whole Horse Health Yahoo Group, I have read that it helps hooves and coat when fed in addition to ground flax.

Thank you!

Hi Tiffany,

You can use 1oz of flax oil as a substitute for 2oz ground flax.

I did manage to find a bottle of liquid flax oil, 8 oz. was the biggest I could find in the store.  I am assuming that she would need 2 oz. of the liquid, unless it is considered more potent than the ground flax?

I picked up a very small bag of whole flax seed in the baking aisle, just to give it a try.

>> We have switched from the stabilized ground to feeding it whole.<<

I thought it was suggested not to feed flax seeds whole due to the horse not being able to chew each seed to get the most benefit. And therefore, grinding daily is recommended. Has this changed?

>>it will keep for 6 months after grinding it<<

I also thought unstablized ground flax seed does not keep more than a day even if refrigerated. Is this true?

We get our flax from the feed store as well.  If you grind your whole flax daily - make sure you clean your grinder after every use.  It becomes rancid very fast and will effect your next batch if not cleaned .  We have switched from the stabilized ground to feeding it whole.

(I think I read where it should be ground daily.)  Also, the feed store sells stabilized ground flax seed.  Is that a better choice?

I get my whole flax from my feed store. It comes in a 50lb bag, which lasts me about 6 months(I give it to all my horses). Hope that helps.

Where do people get whole flax?  No place around here carries it (not likely to order it either), and what I've looked at on-line is like $2/pound or more plus shipping.

Thanks.

You would need about 8500 mg of flax oil per oz of ground flax seed.  If you can find it, might be easier to do liquid flax seed oil.  Another alternative which she would probably not object to is just using whole flax seed instead of ground.

Ground/milled flax is stable for around 6 months, although some claim up to almost 2 years.  Horses are probably much better at picking up off tastes from oxidized fats then we are and that will make them refuse the product. Of course, if it smells even remotely "off" to you, don't feed it.

Alright, Maggie is just not going to eat ground flax.  She tolerated it until I got up to the 2 oz. per day, and then decided she would not touch her hay cubes if flax was anywhere near them.  So I eliminated the flax, went back to just salt, and now she's happy again.

While browsing in the store, I found cold-pressed flaxseed oil capsules with 2 options: 1000 mg (450 mg Omega-3) or 1200 mg (540 mg Omega-3).  What would the equivalent of 2 oz. per day with either of these options?  I'm betting she'd eat one out of my hand with a few pellets.
