Does anyone have any experience with an herbal supplement called Equine Metabolic by Equine Process? A veterinarian suggested this for lowering insulin. SuzanneM & Monty Western Colorado — July 2014 Photo Album: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/echistory8/photos/albums/1794323561

HI Suzanne,
Can you please give a link to the product in question. I did try to google it, but couldn't find an exact match. The only one I found that was close was not suitable for metabolic horses.. in fact it was scary, so just want to make sure we're talking about the same product. Pauline, sorry but I got the name of the company wrong. The company is Standard Process and their supplement is called Equine Metabolic Support.

Suzanne: My IR gelding has been on this product for about 6 months now. It was recommended by my vet who has been spot on with the suggestions and requirements from this group. She has her own favorite remedies (doesn't use jherb but something like it for example) but otherwise her treatments, etc have been what this group recommends. I don't know if it is this product specifically that is contributing to his good health but he is 100% sound and IR is under control. He is allowed no-muzzle grazing for 1-1/2 hours daily and is muzzled the rest (holes are not taped). We have no physical restrictions (only diet) and are on the trails 4-5 times a week. I know that I am one of the lucky ones, be sure of that. In Feb of 2014 he presented laminitis in all 4 feet with rotation in both front (4% and 5%). With the help of this group, a vet that FINALLY gets it (I went through 6) and competent farrier (I went through 3) we are where we are today. Hard to say if EMS is truly contributing to this good fortune. I will be very interested in hearing from the group here regarding this product. Karen/Taz Beverly Hills, FL 2/2014 |

Hi Karen
Glad to hear your boy is doing well. How do you know IR is under control? Have you retested or going on symptoms only? Might there be a case history here we could see? Based on web site there are several ingredients the group does not routinely recommend: Cinnamon, licorice, chromium, for example. There are some studies on vanadium and discussion here on its role as a race nutrient and with magnesium. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/EquineCushings/conversations/messages/105916 https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/EquineCushings/conversations/messages/77667 Would like to know how much of what is in the product but there is nothing on the web site that I could find. The marketing approach seems to be to be to lower glucose which is not the issue with the vast majority of the horses here. Would be interesting to know before and after blood results on this product. There's a graph on the web site but not too much detail. Thanks for the good news about Taz. Nancy C in NH ECIR Moderator 2003 FACT: The VA Polytechnic Pony Study is the only study to look at IR and laminitis under natural conditions. See E. M. PS..... I am scratching my head over the graph on the Standard Process web site. I may be reading it wrong (please correct me) but did the insulin go from 800 UIU/ml to between 400 and 500? It is stated blood glucose remained normal. But it is not the glucose that attacks the laminae.
Taking off grass, testing and balancing the hay, making sure other diagnostic issues are taken care of, and exercise are much more effective. Nancy C in NH ECIR Moderator 2003 FACT: With over 12,000 members and thousands of detailed case histories the ECIR Group has made it possible to spot patterns, many of which have been confirmed later by formal study. See E. M. Kellon, VMD, The Internet as an Epidemiological Tool, 2013 NO Laminitis! Proceedings, Equine Cushing's and Insulin Resistance Group Inc.

Nancy, Cinnamon, licorice.....based on your response below....I have a cookie recipe for IR horses that has cinnamon in it and was considering another with licorice....should I not use it? Suzanne,
Red flags that indicate lack of knowledge about equine insulin resistance or EMS: 1. Emphasis on glucose lowering: Glucose is not elevated in equine IR 2. Citations are not relevant to equine IR. 3. EMS (IR) and human diabetes are not the same 4. Licorice is a stimulant and increases sympathetic nervous system output. Insulin has similar actions in that it is a vascular and sympathoexcitatory hormone. In the face of elevated insulin, I'm not certain that dumping another sympathoexcitatory agent on top of the hormonal milleau is wise. 5. The makers present a two-paragraph synopsis of a study without sufficient detail to know if the trial was sound. Results of statistical tests are not presented so there is no way to judge whether there was an effect of the product. There is no other information about changes in diet, level of work, breed, sex, age or other factors that can influence the results. Bottom line, there are two things that significantly impact glucose and insulin dynamics. Both are rapid and known to be effective but exceedingly boring. Diet and exercise. If only we could sell THAT for $2.33/serving! Kathleen (KFG in KCMO) Research Advisor, ECIR Inc Missouri - USA - Dec 2005 |

Hi Nancy. Thanks for the response. I will try to paste my case history here. To answer your question, we (vet and I) are going to re-test next week. I will know for sure then if Taz is truly under control but am going on symptoms only at this time. You guys are great.
