What is more effective - Compounded Pergolide or Prascend?
p green
Fargo has been on Prascend since being diagnosed in August 2014. I've been caring for him for about two weeks. He is not shedding, has a pot belly and a wasted topline. Obviously, I think he should be doing better. My vet is coming to see him Saturday to do bloodwork and radiograph his feet. When I asked her about compounded pergolide, she told me they didn't see good results from that. Yet when I look at the files in the ECIR Group it appears that folks were having worse results from Prascend than their compounded pergolide. I understand the FDA is cracking down on vets who prescribe compounded pergolide. So I'm wondering -- is the compounded version really less effective than the brand name in folks' opinions? Hi Patti, >When I asked her about compounded pergolide, she told me they didn't see good results from that. I guess I'd want to know what that means, that "they didn't see good results." Blood work? Clinical symtoms? What dose? What pharmacy? What time of year? Age of horse? Length of time since diagnosed? A few facts to back up that assertion would be helpful. I think you're feeling that way, too. Try a search in the archives.Lots of discussion on this subject. Lorna

It's very much a matter of Prasend being far more expensive than compounded pergolide at doses greater than 1 mg daily. Both are effective at the right dose, but if one cannot afford the right dose, PPID will not be controlled. When my mare got up to 3 mg daily, I stopped using Prascend and started using compounded pergolide. She is currently at 3.5 mg daily (last seasonal high dose was up to 4.5 mg.), and I also have a second mare at 3.5 mg. Both are controlled at this dose, but the cost of Prascend would be about $14/day for both horses. The cost for my two mares is only about $3/day for the 3.5 mg compounded pergolide capsules. I switched due to the economics, I've found both products to be quite effective. I order 3.5 mg capsules from Thriving Pets Pharmacy, and there are many other compounding pharmacies that are recommended by this group. It seems some vets are harder to deal with about these issues. I'm grateful mine is paying great attention to how well my mares are doing, and very willing to prescribe what I request. Best of luck to you and Fargo. I started my two drafts on compounded pergolide (.6mg) and 2 ponies (1mg) and have been very satisfied. 4 out of 4. Neighbor started on Prascend (1mg) and changed to compounded due to price being better and they are happy as well. 2 out of 2. 100% satisfaction here. Tests come back "controlled" PPID.
