split peas/fresh peas
I'm thinking of how I can get extra protein into my mare's diet. She can't have to much Alfalfa - I tried split peas but they are really hard for my mare to chew. I was wondering if fresh or frozen peas would be O.K. - they are softer but would they add too much of something that my mare shouldn't have?

My pony would not eat split peas as is. He eats them happily if they have been soaked. At first I soaked them separately, but now add them, with water, to his tub of ODTB cubes in the morning. By suppertime cubes are fluffy and peas softened.
BTW This time around I used green split peas, not yellow. He just seems to like them better.

Mine is on the ancient side too - she's 30 this year. Do you soak the peas before you grind them - or grind them dry.

I have tried soaking split peas but they didn't seem to soften much - maybe I wasn't soaking them long enough?

Pea powder sounds like it may work. I'll check into it.

Hi Karen,
Are her protein and lysine requirements being met by her diet? How much additional protein do you want to supplement?
I checked a nutritional data site and 1 cup of frozen unprepared) peas has 7 grams of protein and one cup of dried split peas has 48 grams of protein.
Two other sources of protein that are often recommended are whey protein isolate 90% (30 grams = 27 grams of protein) and Pea Powder. I forgot to write down the protein available in pea powder, but you can find it on the Pure Bulk site. Coincidentally, the whey protein isolate and pea powder are on sale right now.

Diet right now is a work in progress, since we have moved away from any grain. Weight is down this spring and am trying to get it back up - she's about a 4 on the scale. Her teeth were checked today and all was O.K. - It may be that I cut her hay back too soon this spring - so she's back to free choice and I have increased her Timothy Balance Cubes. I thought the peas would be a good addition. Thanks for looking up the info on the types of peas.

I called Pure Bulk - they said the pea protein powder they have comes from China. So - I have a call in to the local natural food store - they are checking as to where their split peas come from. If it comes from the U.S., I'll get it there - if it comes from China, it's back to the drawing board. What a tangled web this nutrition stuff is!!!!

It sounds like I wasn't soaking them long enough - I'll give it a try!

Hi Karen,
If I remember, I put them in his feed tub in the morning with the ODTB cubes on top, and cold water to not-quite cover. If I forget in the a.m. I do the same at noon, but using boiling water from the kettle. This meal is given around 5 p.m. and is soft.
I wasn't sure whether the taste or texture was the turn-off when he refused them when first offered. When I tried them again, I started with 2 tablespoons of dry weight peas. He now is getting 1/4 cup dry measure, and eager to eat them.

Yes, the person I talked with did say that they tested the supplements. Asking for a COA would be a good idea. In the meantime, the Natural Food store nearby has told me that their split peas come from USA/Canada, so I'll use them for now and grind them myself.

Hi Karen,
A couple of months ago one of the customer service reps at Pure Bulk told me that they have all their supplements independently tested here in the U. S. If still interested in the product, you might ask them for a COA (Certificate of Analysis) for the product and verify that independent testing/analysis was done here.
