What about the ALCar and Phyto-Quench?  Does he only get those if he eats?  Any heat or increased pulse strength in feet?  Boots and pads?

Hi

He blew out 2 abcesses on his left front this morning both came out the sole, soaked his foot in warm water and epsom salt for 20 minutes. Then wrapped it with a diaper and vet wrap, then put his boot back on,it was still draining puss. His digital pulse is very strong yet on both fronts.

Thank you,

Hi Corrine,

Although messy, draining abscesses is a good thing. It should help with his comfort fairly quickly. Soaking in as hot a water as he will tolerate with epsom salts 2-3 times per day will usually help to draw them out a bit more quickly.

Hang in there.

Hi Lavinia

He's still quite lame yet so think there are more abcesses?? His hoofs are still hot and digital pulse bounding. He didn't mind having his feet soaked, headed out to soak feet again. Do they stand like a laminatic horse when they have abcesses? Jasper got his fronts out in front of him with hindend up underneath himself today. Should i also ice his hoofs being their so much heat??

I wonder if the trim had something to do with the abcesses?  Will abcesses cause a bounding pulse and hot feet ??

On lameness scale of 1 to 5  1 being sound 5 being very lame he's a 5 today.

Thank you,

Hi Corrine,
I do not have a horse with PPID or IR, but did reach out to the group earlier in the year when one of his vets were concerned about his weight.
Anyway - I am writing because I have a lot of experience with abscesses. The first abscess I observed with my horse had me very alarmed as he was walking like he had a broken leg (on the toe and limping dramatically). Every horse’s abscess pain can manifest differently though depending on the severity of the abscess.

I would continue to soak your horse’s feet until all traces of puss is gone from his diapers. I usually soak at least twice a day and dry off the foot and continue applying a drawing agent in the diaper for a day or two after the puss begins draining JUST to encourage continued draining. If you quit soaking too early, the infection can persist.

Bounding pulses and warm/hot hooves are consistent with abscesses. The hotter the foot, the more severe the abscess may be. Pulses don’t even need to be bounding, but usually they are stronger then normal in affected feet. As Lavinia suggested, when the abscesses break open and begin to drain/ooze, there is some immediate refief. Think of it like this: If you had a big blister full of puss and it was inside your foot, it would cause alot of pressure and pain/soreness. Once the blister breaks and starts to drain, your foot would feel so much better, but still sore and sensitive, but SO much better. The warm/hot epson soaks will soothe his feet. I have no idea if there may be further complications caused by other issues, but can attest that abscesses are  consistent with how you have described your horse’s condition.

All the best,
Robyn

Hi Robyn or anyone willing to help.

He has some relief from pain but is unwilling to pickup front feet tonight,so ideas on how to get him to pickup feet??. Did two hot water soaks with epsom salt LF seems to have quit draining,RF has several soft spots on sole. I'am guessing abcesses are going to pop through.

Wont pickup feet so can't unwrap or get off boots to check. Had put icthamol not sure its spelled right ) To help draw out the puss.  Last soak he still had hot hoofs before i did soak,i also iced his feet after doing hot soak he really liked the icing. Not sure icing was smart to do with abcesses..

Will wait till morning to try soaking hoofs again,he's obviously to sore to be messed with tonight.

I still wonder if i'am dealing with laminitis and abcesses at the same time??

Thank you for the help,

Yes, he probably doesn't want to lift either front foot because it will put pressure on the other foot.  My Horse stood on just 2 feet where he had a meniscus tear on the right hind and lifting the opposite front foot was too much for him. So he just stood on two legs. Jasper,  on the other hand is dealing with two affected front feet and there's no way to take the pressure off one when you lift. I think it's wise to leave them alone for this evening and let him rest. If the problem is strictly abscesses, he should be feeling better and better each day. Let's see how he feels in the morning.
Is there anything that you can give Jasper to relieve some of the pain while he is working through the abscesses?
Much love to you both,
Robyn

Hi Robyn

He's on ALCAR and phyto-Quench he can't have bute or banamine has a history of ulcers. I'll  see how he is in the morning. Go back and read some of my post you'll get a good idea of all that  is going on.

Good Morning Corrine,

I have been following your posts and want you to know with having been where you are, my heart goes out to you and I commend you and this group for all your care and hard work to help Jasper. I hope for you and Jasper this morning he is feeling much better after the abscessing is draining.

I am not a moderator or vet, but can only share my experience. Several years ago, my horse, Raven had laminitis in all 4 feet at the same time. Secondary to the laminitis, she developed severe abscesses in all 4 feet. She could not stand for any period of time and was basically recumbent for a few months only to stand to change sides. I learned to be creative in my soaking and wrapping since it had to be done while she was laying down. I don't know if you have access to the large IV bags, if not, there are now "soaking" bags available on the market. For Raven I use the large IV bags with a chlorine-dioxide soak secured at the top with vet-wrap. The chlorine dioxide soak I use for abscessing kills the bacteria, however does not damage healthy tissue.  This is a long soak, 45 min in the solution, empty the bag, then place and secure the bag back on the hoof for another 45 min to allow the gases to continue to work. After the soaking is completed, I then dry the hoof, use animalintex poultice pads, wrap, and replace the hoof boot.

To this day, I still use the IV (soaking) bags along with the chlorine-dioxide soak for prevention. As long as Raven is on a soft surface, not to tear the bags as she walks, I am able to soak all feet at the same time.

These are just a couple helpful hints which work for us.

Hugs to you both!!

Hi

I'am at a total loss today, when he down and i try to do his feet he gets up,then refuses to pickup either foot. He's still very sore and he needs his boots and diaper wrap taken off it's been over 12 hours now.

Any idea on how to get boots off and feet soaked,i'am tired and at my wits end right now. He's just not wanting any part of his feet being messed with. And i'am super frustrated with it all.

Thank you for the help,

Hi Corrine.

Been through times like these.  You can do only what you can do. If he's not having it, let him and you rest and try again tomorrow.

Go make a cup of tea or a glass of wine and take a mini vacation.

FACT: Iron overload has been identified as a significant factor in IR horses that are not receiving a mineral-balanced diet. (Nielsen, BD, Vick, MM, Dennis, PM, 2012. A potential link between insulin resistance and iron overload disorder in browsing rhinoceroses investigated through the use of an equine model. J Zoo Wildl Med. 2012 Sep;43(3 Suppl):S61-5.)

Hi Nancy

My only concern about letting it go for another day is, he's got a real foul smell coming from both hoofs. Not the normal hoof smell the infection smell. So think he's popped out more abcesses sometime over night or early morning.

So is him being in the same wraps possibly filled with puss and ick going to be ok for another 12 or more hours??
i haven't tryed again here he's tired and laying down resting so just left him alone.

>He's wearing easyboot Rx,

You can undo the velcro.
Depending on how snug they are ,he will either step out of them - in time- or you can hold on to the heel part as he steps.
I would do this on sheets or large towels,or something other than stable mats,or ground.
If he steps on a towel (large hand towel?)that will cover his foot ,you can bring the towel up his fetlock/leg and secure it,so that the foot is kept clean,or can lose some of the pus on the towel, or.....provide a breather for you both.

>also tried the rescue remedy seems to help but not enough to get his feet done,

Maybe try more.
