EXCEDE

Donna Powell

Does anyone know if EXCEDE an injectable antibiotic is safe for an IR/Cushings horse?  I need to know so I can give it to him now or return the med on Friday.

Thank you.

Hi Donna,

Here is a post from Jaini that I found in the archives regarding Excede.  Post #174118

All should be aware of the potential of cephalosporins, in particular ceftiofur (Excenel, Naxcel, Excede) to cause laminitis.

These drugs are commonly used, and labeled for use in horses - but caution, big-time, should be exercised in their use. In fact, don't use them in horses at all.

What antibiotic do we use with Cushing horses?  [And, I guess IR, too, although mine isn't there yet.]

Thanks.

Martha and Kathy,

Thanks for your response.  Do you know of an injection antibiotic that is safe?

Sherry,
Sometimes we get lucky!  I've never been much of a gambler....;-)  But, thanks for the food for thought.

Prior to official diagnosis my mare had SMZs and a shot of Excede with no ill effects.

Hi

I treated a horse with EXCEDE horse got a shot once a week for 4 weeks, caused extreme sore neck, made the horse very needle shy 2 shots into treatment. I did not own the horse, that was treated but seeing the reaction on this horse,i did shots for i WOULDN"T give EXCEDE,to any horse. Just my opinion for what its worth.

It all depends on what you are treating. Certain classes of antibiotics only work for certain things.
So the first question is, what are you treating?

Kerry,

I did not post the below message....I think they wanted a general answer.  But to clarify my issue, his tail bone has an infected sore (blood and pus) from the biting flys....sweet itch, chronic.

Hi,

What antibiotic is safe to treat a PPID/IR horse with a sinus infection?

She has a discharge from her right nostil, no fever, lungs OK, and she's eating well - and she's a picky eater. Years ago she was briefly on metronidazole but colicked badly so that's out. Three months ago she had a broken tooth removed from her right upper arcade, not sure if that's the cause of this problem or not. Is uniprim OK?

Thanks!
