Target Pergolide Dosage
jamsler707@...
Reading archived conversations on retesting one said when you reach your target dosage to retest. How does one know this target dosage? I saw an IR calculator on the History form but have yet to find a chart telling dosage amounts for Pergolide. I started Luxy on 1 mg Wedgewood Gourmed(not what I had asked vet to prescribe, wanted the half mg capsules) 9/3/15. 9/23/15 upped her to 1 1/2 Gourmed since she had gone back to not looking so chipper, etc. She seems better today! Haven't updated the history on the Pergolide yet. Julia & Luxy in PA 11/20/11

Ha ha, Julia - this is the $64,000 question! There are two ways: First is to test 2 - 3 weeks after reaching a dose you think is okay (ie, 1 mg in many cases of first-time PPID medicating) Second is to monitor clinical signs; when the signs of PPID improve markedly (less drinking, less urinating, better foot comfort, more chipper demeanor), then stop at that dose, and, ideally, test 2-3 weeks later. Below are two links to this; the second on is a really good post by Patti, some of which I have copied under the link: http://ecirhorse.org/index.php/cushing-s-disease/pergolide#MonitorPhy https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/EquineCushings/conversations/topics/111988?threaded=1&l=1

Thanks Jaini,
That’s why I upped her dose yesterday she had perked up initially on I mg
then when to looking almost like before. This a.m. she gobbled up her ODTB
cubes & she had mostly quit eating them a few days ago. I will keep
being vigilant on how she acts & looks.

Hi Julia
There is no chart for pergolide doses. Just like with humans you need to dose, watch, make adjustments if needed. The good news is with time you and your vet get better at this. It sounds like you are moving in the right direction. A lot of us use a checklist of symptoms. IF I got to where my vet and I thought we needed to be and I still saw symptoms, I would discuss the possibility of upping the pergolide. it is especially important to monitor feet and trim this time of year.
