Still in need of help! Dexter and Dixie

Jacque White

Hello again...I am still in need of help and direction.  I have updated both Dexter and Dixie's history files and saved them.  When I go to upload them I cannot find them.  I have done this repeatedly 4-5 times. It has taken so much time...please help!  I was able to print them and can email them but don't know how or why they won't upload.

I also have questions about the Uckele U Balance Pellets and the Quadra Fac (probiotics for haybelly).  I have spent $190 and my animals will NOT EAT either.  I have also tried the Equi Sweet sugar free molasses and they turn their noses up and walk away.  I am beside myself on what to do??  I cannot keep spending so much money on trying these different products...does anyone have a suggestion??  I have done the blood work which I cannot upload and have done all the hay analysis.  I am looking for a balancer with magnesium for insulin resistance.

Also I will be flying out to my daughters wedding and will be gone 5 days total.  I have a friend that can come and feed only 2x a day...instead of 4x a day that I feed.  How should I transition them? I will be back in 5 days and resume the 4x a day.  We are feeding in 1.25 in hay nets.  Should I divide the amount of hay that they get or should I just have her fill them so they have 24 hour hay until I return...any suggestions??  I have been feeding 35 a day between both per Dr Kellon. I am leaving on the 5th of Nov and returning on Nov 10th, so I still have time to transition them.

I appreciate any help or advice...

Desperate,

Hi Jacque,
You wrote: I joined the group in 11-17-2014.  I still am having trouble finding my way through all the different areas.

When members join the ECIR they are sent a bunch of documents.  One of them is the ECIR Files Table of Contents (TOC) - a document designed to help members find their way around all the various web pages/sites/sections of the ECIR Group, as well as great place to search for information on anything in our files (and more).
For the latest version (updated just today) click here.

The "overview" below, was copied from the TOC.  It should help you navigate the various ECIR find things in the ECIR.

Table of Contents/ECIR Sections:

ECIR Files

ECHoof Files

Hoof Tutorials

ECHorsekeeping Files

ECIR Sister Sites – Listing with links to all sites connected to the ECIR.

ECIR History Sites – Links to all the various locations where case histories are stored.

Links to Products, Tools & Resources

Hope the TOC helps you navigate, but if it doesn't please let me know what you find confusing with it.  The ECIR is a large and complicated group but chock full of information that members need to read in order to understand what their horses need to avoid being debilitated by PPID or IR.

I just updated both history files on Dexter and Dixie.

Hi there,

I'm sure the pros will chime in soon, but I wanted to ask: how much exercise do they get, and what kind?
Is it just a paddock or a track system?

Not a whole lot...I try to walk them daily but it isn't enough.  When it snows they will not want to walk  due to icy conditions.  I walk them about 10-15 min a day.

I think I fixed it....so sorry for all the problems. I am having a difficult time finding my way around the group.  Please note when reviewing the Case Histories on Dexter and Dixie that they are both very high in Leptin.   I am feeding about 32 pounds between both. Dexter 18#, Dixie 14#.   I started mixing the Uckele U Balance with the Enrich Plus to get them to eat it. They won't touch it unless I mix it...help!  The Quadra Fac they won't touch.  I am walking them as much as I can for exercise. 5 laps each around the pasture 80x100 everyday...weather permitting.  We are getting into our raining season and my place has been under water at times.  Doing the best I can.

I am leaving Nov 5 for my daughters wedding in AZ.  I will return in 5 days.  I have friend who is knows my animals and can feed 2 x a day.  Will that be acceptable?  I have been feeding 4 x a day dividing their ration of hay into 1.25in hay nets.  I can start to transition them down and then when I return go back to 4 x a day.  Just looking for advice on what would be the best options for them.
Again...sorry for the computer mix up.

I'd really like to see your CH ,and I don't have time to look up the link again.
So I'm going to persist here , before making suggestions about your trip. I imagine others may feel the same.

We need you to add your CH link to your signature every time you post.

Hi Jacque,

I'm not sure this reply will be super helpful, just chiming in that you're not alone. Maybe some other ideas will come in. I was very recently in the same boat, having to go out of town for a week, when my two current guys are used to being fed 4xs a day in their dry-lot.   I had to use a pet-sitter, a very good one, and she sent me lots of texts about how they were doing. She was only able to do the morning and evening, and they went a little longer over night than I did. Fortunately, I was able to have the teenage daughter of my friend give them an afternoon feed of hay, almost everyday.  Because of how my dry lot is set up, she was able to feed without actually going in there, and I showed her how to weigh a serving.  Is it possible maybe you could have a reliable teen or other friend in the area do something like that? Where gates don't have to be opened and so forth?  I realize that may not be an option, but if there is a person, and you could set it up so that they are just delivering hay, and maybe a short text update -then it would be more about finding a reliable person than one with much horse experience.

I did start to transition mine to eating later in the morning and a little earlier at night. I wasn't as good about reducing their number of feedings before I left, I admit. That was very hard to do. When I was gone, on the days mine had to get just two feedings, they seemed to have done okay. I really did worry about the inconsistency/differences they had to go through for seven days, but this was a very important family gathering that I couldn't  miss, and it meant everything to me.  I hope you can find a satisfactory arrangement and enjoy your daughter's wedding.  That's a wonderful thing to celebrate!
