FOLIC acid: giving too much 10g . not 10mg.that was ordered.
Since, August 2017, Uckele has been supplying my current order of custom supplements, Patti asked for 10mg of folic acid..per day. Uckele has been putting in 10g each day...... I didnt catch this error on the label when the product arrived.( the order was emailed, patti's pdf file ,, not phoned in).. Many thanks to Joan from mybesthorse to point me to question why 10g would be supplied. I'm told that Rod at Horsetech would have called on such a glaring order.. But not Uckele... how disappointed I am with myself that I didnt do better. to catch this.
Can Dr Kellon suggest a path to remedy for the horses ? I have alerted my vet as well. ( I use this supplement on one horse besides Jesse. ) I have planned iron testing at ksu for your study... should I delay till things get fixed? -- LJ Friedman Nov 2014 San Diego, CA

I did some research... because folic acid is water soluble, not a big worry.. I read a study where problems were happening when rats were injected with 1000 times the dose IV. Jesse only got 1000 times the dose orally.

Regarding a toxicity issue, you're correct that there has never been an oral folic acid toxicity recognized (other than GI upset that can occur with B vitamins at any dosage).
Folic acid is the inactive form of vitamin B9 and needs to be converted to folate. Oral folic acid is actually poorly absorbed in horses: https://vtechworks.lib.vt.edu/bitstream/handle/10919/28568/ALODISSERTATION.pdf?sequence=2&isAllowed=y -- Eleanor in PA www.drkellon.com |

Louis,
I was made aware of this issue yesterday. While indeed this is not a toxic level of folic acid, the issue should have indeed been caught here at Uckele prior to release of the customized vitamin and mineral blend. In our formulation system we have a list of toxic or potentially toxic ingredients and levels of such that we may be asked to formulate to. This includes high levels of such minerals and ingredients like selenium, vitamin A, vitamin D, even things like iron for example. Many minerals and vitamins can show toxicity at some level. That being said, we also have the responsibility to deliver to clients what they are looking for in a customized vitamin/mineral mix. We should have caught the fact that 10 mg's of folic acid was requested, and 10g's was delivered. We have been making customized vitamin/mineral blends for decades for individual horses, and have not had this issue to this point. I apologize for this issue, and have stated a corrective action process here at Uckele to this end. We appreciate the ECIR group and the mission to help horses with laminitis and associated metabolic problems. We wish to be a strong partner in that effort going forward.
