Savannah’s trims

Pat Gauvreau <pgauvreau@...>

trying something new in this thread. Need to ask Lavinia questions on my trimmers behalf. She want to know how long to not touch the heels.

Not Lavinia, but I just wanted to say: "Good lord, that looks a LOT better!"   How is Savannah walking after her new trim?

If it were my horse, I would be just very carefullshaving the very back of the heels, to bring the point of the heel back without taking off height. Tricky, but can be done. We will wait on Lavinia's expert counsel.

Good work, Pat and trimmer!

Hi, Pat - Dawn included a link to Maureen Tierney's trimming instructional videos. This one is a good one to look at, as at 5:35 you can see the trim on a hoof that looks a lot like Savannah's:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLXB1c8YlpA

Thanks again, Dawn, for this info!

Will add to the 'that looks MUCH better' this time thought.  How is she feeling with the corrections?

As far as heels, I wouldn't touch anything for a while yet but Lavinia can of course answer that better :-)

Thanks,

Hi Pat,

Not until the HPA gets correctly aligned. As Jaini mentioned, the very backs of the heels can be beveled toward the rear of the foot and only lightly pass a rasp once over the actual heels themselves to maintain them where they are. The left foot is the worst and is going to need a lot of added height.

My trimmer has many questions especially about leaving the heels alone. I’ve suggested she join the ECIR Group so she can ask you directly. I think something is being lost in translation. I sent her the link to watch a YouTube video that was sent to me by one of the moderators. She said it was for beginners and had nothing about why to leave the heels. Going on about too much for me to type in here. I’ll copy and paste it to another message or thread (I’m not sure what I’m doing anymore). I’m getting confused again where I’m suppose to type all this.
LeeAnne also asked me to mention Savannah’s Case History has been updated and to ask the support team for management suggestions so that further laminitis can be avoided.
Regarding the updated Case History ... I couldn’t remember the name of new vit/min supplement from Mad Barn but it’s Amino Trace + but she hasn’t been eating all her soyhulls mash since the move so not actually getting the daily dose of all her stuff. hopefully she will start eating it all up soon.
She also has a deep crevice on LF toe that has been there a long time but no one has ever picked it out. I recently did it myself since her toes are short enough now. I remove boot daily and squeeze ACV concoction in there with a 5ml syringe. Any ideas what I should do about it other than what I’m doing?  If I ever have help at barn I’ll try to take a picture of it for her album. I’ll copy Rachel’s last message to me about the heels and post it back on this thread. I hope she joins the Group so she can communicate her own questions directly to you.
PS. Savannah seems to be walking better today but I hate to say that in case tomorrow she’s lame again. For now I’m keeping her boots on for comfort plus trying to flush out the bad stuff in that crevice and prevent dirt from getting in.  I’m going to order a small abscess loop knife so I can see how deep it goes. Rachel just leaves it but I encouraged her to pick at it last week. It’s causing pain and could be serious.  What do you think I should do about it?

I’m looking for wedge pads to put in her boot on the LF. Anyone know who sells them?  I was thinking of getting a local leather worker to make me one but don’t know how high of a lift she needs. Would I need various degrees to make adjustments as her heels improve.  I’m assuming the HPA changes over time.

Hi Pat: You can purchase leather wedge pads from any of the farrier supply stores in Alberta or BC.

Hi Pat,

You can make them yourself. Just double or triple the pad in the back half of the boot to add more height. Or, you can take a thick pad and shave the thickness off the front half in a wedge shape.

The Soft Rides sell their pads as wedges. The Easycare Cloud pads are also wedges.

Hi Pat

About that crevice that you are trying to prevent dirt from getting in. I suggest that having cleaned it out, you stuff it with enough gauze that the gauze wedges in and stays there if possible. This can also be wetted with your medicine of choice generally. You can use a hoof pick if necessary to be able to push more of the gauze in. Depends on the size and shape of the crevice. The gauze will help keep the dirt out. It may fall out sometimes but that's ok. Just put a fresh one in. My vet likes syringing with iodine. I think I read Lavinia saying ACV works. We also use Clean Trax or White Lightning/oxine (cheap version of white lightning) mixed with vinegar for a longer soak if there is more serious infection going on and have found success with those.

Regarding the crevice - I really need to see what you mean to be able to comment. Is it visible on the latest set of pix that were put up the other day? There doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary that needs to be addressed and nothing shows up on the radiographs either.

I put a quick mark-up in the album - is the area circled in yellow at the tip of the frog the area you are concerned about?

If you go down a few pix you see LF with a ruler beside it. Note at toe there is some gauze sticking out. That’s where the hole is. Quite deep. Holds lots of liquid when flushing with syringe filled with a wound cleansing solution of water, salt, She flinches when I probe it. Stuffed soaked gauze into hole for two days. Now I just leave open after flushing and put boot back on. I was going to leave boot off today because I read an article of Pete Ramey’s last night saying these get worse in dark because fungus grows best in dark moist areas. I think it’s very old and goes way in. I’ll look for old pics and post them.

Hi Pat - I noticed you are on Vancouver Island.  If you need supplies such as a muzzle, boots, pads etc, I can help.  My IR mare passed away in December and I am well equipped with stuff.  I can likely help you with sources ODTB cubes and minerals as well.

I looked further in the album and see this hole in your mark up photo and in previous LF before you marked it up. Just a bit off to the side near point of toe. The black spot is where it is and when probing in goes under wall towards Center of toe. She feels pain in there. Not just dirt I can pick out. Is that white line disease?

Pat,

Please take a look at this post I put up recently:

https://ecir.groups.io/g/Hoof/message/9743?p=,,,20,0,0,0::Created,,%22oxine%22,20,2,0,4556340

If interested, these are the instructions I followed for determining how much Oxine AH to mix with water and activating agent:

http://www.hoof-smart.com/2010/07/02/hoof-care/treat-and-prevent-hoof-infections-with-oxine-ah/

As I mentioned in the post, my mare had a cavity that went from the toe all the way up to the coronet band.  At the bottom, the opening was fairly small, but at certain points it was probably an inch wide or more.

I'm concerned about how deep your cavity may go, and although I'm not a vet, a frontal xray may show just how big it really is.  If memory serves, that's the only way we knew just how deep ours was.  It took a long time, but we finally got it resolved without a resection.

Thanks Jessica. Very interesting. Is Oxine AH same as White Lightening?  Sounds like they are since require white vinegar to activate. I can’t afford to get Vet back to take frontal X-rays. Should have taken them all around when he was here two weeks ago. Thanks for those mixing instructions. I’ll print them and take to barn. I have Davis Soaking Boots and she’s good standing in them.

Just checked and Amazon will not ship Oxine AH to Canada. Must be restriction in chemicals. I’ll check farrier supply stores for it.
