Mini Archie - Post Trim, Hay Analysis, and Hay Soaking Questions

Laurie

My mini did great after his trim on 8/17 and continues to do so. I added some post-trim pics to our album last week.

I received the sugar and starch results on the 3 lots of hay that I have on hand and added pics of them to our photo album. If I'm interpreting the results correctly, all are under 10%, but not by much. And the lowest one, the Coastal 3-String, is of course the one that I have the least amount of left. This is the one I have been feeding him, soaked, since mid-July. The one labeled Coastal Pilot Point was the one he was being fed for 2-3 weeks prior to when he became sore and was a new load. When I realized he was hurting, I switched him back to the 3-String, but did not start soaking it until I joined this group.

I have plans to be out of town for a weekend next month and have a pet sitter that I normally use come twice/day to feed the horses. Since she will not be able to hang out in the barn for over an hour while the hay soaks and drains, would it be ok for her to put the hay in the water and leave it there overnight or all day so that she only needs to drain it before feeding it? Or are the numbers low enough that it can safely be fed dry?

I think you need to soak it.  How about getting some extra hay nets and soaking the hay then hanging it to dry out of the sun but somewhere with decent air movement. She can then just take down a net and feed.

Hi Dr. Kellon -

No problem getting more hay nets, but are you saying that I should pre-soak 6-8 hay nets for the weekend? I am worried that the hay will turn rancid because I don't think it will get enough air flow to the middle of the net. Our temps will likely still be in the 90's during the day, 70's at night. Can the hay be soaked overnight or during the day, hung to drain when the pet sitter arrives, and then be fed after it's drained?

Yes, I was talking about presoaking. Since you're only feeding a mini you should be able to get the hay well fluffed up inside the net so it dries well. If you have time, try it now.  Soaking overnight or during the day is far more likely to get you fermented hay.

Thank you Dr. Kellon. I weighed out 2 days worth of hay, split it between 2 larger nets then I normally use for feeding, soaked, drained, then put them into two larger nets for drying. I don't have an area for the drying that is both out of the sun and has good air circulation, so we'll see how long it takes to dry.

When would you recommend that I retest his labs? They were done in May before his episode of laminitis

Laurie,
I was trying to find your hay test results but couldn't. You did create a folder named "Laurie and Archie"(this is your main folder) and this is where you would store Archie's case history form (done). Within this main folder you can create another folder called "Hay Tests" and download your hay test documents into that folder. Then the moderators and interested members can view your hay tests.

Hi Bonnie  -

I took photos of the hay analysis reports and put them in my photo album using my phone yesterday. Then, after seeing your message this morning, I made a new folder in the Case History section and scanned the hay results, but when I tried to upload them into the new folder, I received this message - "Images cannot be uploaded to the Files section. Please use the Photos section." I tried a couple of times and got the same message. I can't figure out another way to put them in their own folder, any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I would suggest that for future tests (hay, blood, etc) that you request they be emailed to you as PDFs. PDF files can be uploaded into files folders. If you have copies of your results mailed (snail mail) to you then yes you will either have to take photos of the test results and put them into your photo album OR you can type the test results into a word document that you create then save the doc as a pdf. Now you will have your results in a pdf which you can upload into a files folder. Yes, this would be a lot of typing for a full hay analysis.

I use Equi-Analytical for my hay tests and I choose "Email" for my hay test results. I get the results faster this way and they arrive in pdf format.
