Hay Balancer Suggested Referring This Question To Dr. Kellon
Since receiving my first hay analysis Friday i've connected with an ECIR-referred hay balancer in my area, posed the following question to her and she suggested this might be one for Dr. Kellon.
When I first rescued Relevante he had a decent mane...over the winter and this summer it has progressively thinned/shortened....I’ve tried MSM, bathed, done braids to help prevent breakage and rubbed in other products into the roots designed to stimulate growth (I have caught him trying to stick his head through the fence to reach grass on the other side which is out of his reach and at first thought that this was possibly the reason (and prior to being bathed also noticed him once rubbing his crest against the edge of his open doorway to the paddock but now I’m thinking it’s something else/maybe something he is lacking because it looks like the whole mane is being affected (my vet thought that might be the case as well but admitted he had no suggestions). Could this be related to Cushings? I'm concerned in the event this is a symptom of something else that needs addressing.

Could you post a photo in your album please? Any changes in his tail for forelock? Any hoof quality issues at the same time?

Absolutely. I'll be going out there tomorrow so will get a current image (i board). No changes to the tail that i can see. We've been on a consistent corrective hoof trim schedule with Lavinia since April...My farrier hasn't noted any hoof quality issues and he does look at that each time we trim..I have recent hoof photos up that Lavinia is marking up for his Aug. 28 trim. I will take a photo of the tail too just so you can see. Thanks! Will let you know when i get the mane/tail photos posted tomorrow.

My horse, Logo, began rubbing his crest aggressively a few weeks ago. My first thought was threadworms because I had seen some discussion of that here. I had never heard them mentioned before. My daughter (a vet) thought it looked like sunburn. The crest of his mane has always been sparse, due to overaggressive mane pulling we surmised. I put silvadene on twice daily and washed it off daily. It’s looking much better now but I still keep a fly sheet with neck piece on him to shield it from the sun.

Hi Dr. Kellon, I posted the photos. The farrier trimmed Tues. and felt hoof health was good. When i unbraided his forelock and small chuck of hair come out but otherwise seems okay. The tail appears unaffected. I included photos of him pre-cushings to show his mane but i'm not sure how well you can see it. Also posted photos of his forelock and tail and threw in a body shot. Thanks!
