Horse got out 4 hours 😞 HELP!!!! Anything I can do???

Random Ranch

I came home to find King out grazing with my other horses. Someone left a gate open. I am heart sick and worried. He was out for a total of four hours exactly.....after eating his lunch two flakes of hay.  Is there anything I can do to try to prevent any symptoms? Thank you for any advice.

Hi Amy,

First - breathe!!  This has probably happened to most of us and most of the time the horses do fine.  Check these files for some suggestions:  https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/files/Emergency%20Protocols
Hang in there!!

Thank you Cheryl, I read thru the files. The only thing I didn’t see, was about the feeding/diet after the occurrence.  I guess I’m just curious do I feed him tonight or do I wait?

It was probably good that he ate his hay meal before he got out on grass.  That may have "diluted" the effect of the sugar in the grass.  Along with watching for hoof symptoms,  I would keep an eye out for a possible colic since he isn't used to grass.  If all is well with his tummy, my thought would be to give him some of his low s/s supper.  Hope all is well with your boy.

Hi Amy,

I agree with Laura.  According to your case history, you're not feeding any concentrate though, correct? Just soaked hay?  When my horses got out a few months ago (bad horse sitter mistake), I gave them 1/2 of their usual nightly ration but with extra water (my guys get a combo of soaked SHPs and BP) and they were fine :-).  I gave therm their usual night feed of hay  in small mesh hay bags.   How is King today?

Cheryl,

Thank you for your input.   I’m actually not feeding any concentrate and he’s actually on regular low starch hay, we’re not soaking it anymore. He’s doing awesome!  The good thing is, since his episode, he has lost nearly 225 pounds. So I have been very strict and very careful with his diet. Hopefully that allowed for this sort of accident to not be disastrous.   I ended up not feeding him last night, but I got up at the crack of dawn and fed him this morning.   In hindsight, the suggestion about feeding him soaked hay was probably the right thing to do, poor guy.  However, I feel like I dodged a bullet.   But I’m feeling much more at ease at the moment and very thankful that he’s OK.
