Yes Dr. Clougher- I am pulling my hair out! LOL
thank you for your encouragement at the conference from yourself and Jodi! Shark is eating hay just fine every day and drinking. It’s his beet pulp and supplements he will not touch. I did as you advised and only gave him beet pulp for a few days then began to slowly introduce the salt. He did ok with that. Then I started adding the others slowly and he went off of it each time I added something new so I went back and forth- but now he leaves his whole bucket. When I say this is so unlike him- it is. He has always ATTACKED his feed bowl. Good motivated is an understatement! Lol i will try to upload his latest trim photos I took of his front feet. His new hoof capsule is growing in great and tight- but since we have had some “events” every month, he has event lines, but his lamella wedge is almost grown out! That’s the exciting part! -- Candice Piraino September 2018, Summerfield, FL Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Candice%20and%20Shark Shark's Photo Album: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=71507 . |

Some restaurant supplies carry bulk salt. 25 pounds in a plastic bin with a tight top doesn't cake. Feed store salt is only 95% pure, so I try to avoid it because the pinkish color says contaminants to me. -- Cass for Cayuse (PPID/IR) and Diamond (IR) Sonoma County, Calif. Oct. Gail,
Candice is referring to pergolide, she has simply typed in the letters wrong. -- Dawn Wagstaff and Tipperary Saline, MI 2003 |

Candice,
Several other suggestions. As per the thread Dr. Clougher linked for you, Cocosoya can often entice a horse to eat the undesirables. Are you also saying he is not eating his hay either? Or he just wont eat his supplements mixed into a carrier(beet pulp)? I've had horses eat beet pulp for months, then one day, refuse to eat it. Dump it out, make a new batch, no. Open a new bag, repeat. So....then will go to the next carrier. Such as soy hull pellets, timothy pellets, Stabul 1, and what they are now eating, FiberForce from Cavalor. I've noticed that if it is warm and humid out, they do not like their carrier and supplements really wet or soupy. They want it drier. If it is cold and dry out, they want warm water soupy meals. I also recently switched feed bowls for them. I have used rubber feed pans from Little Giant for years, but always struggled with keeping them clean. I believe over time, they become porous enough that they soak up water, supplements, and horse saliva and I don't care what you use to clean them, they are still emanating a smell. I was leery of using hard plastic bowls, because I had Tipperary crack a plastic salt container once and slice open his lower jaw , requiring ten stitches. Then I came across these premium thick plastic that really dense pasture feeding bowls and I love them. They literally rinse out and a plastic brush across them removes everything. They look like new and the horses eat every bite out of them. You might want to consider whatever pan , bowl, bucket you are feeding him out of may be giving off a funky smell. https://kdequestrian.com/collections/platinum-line/products/kd-168-platinum-line-pan-feeder They have a storefront that is down for maintainence right now, but you can order directly. http://www.equinestablesupply.com/brands/K%26D-EQUESTRIAN.html Also, when I first started Tipperary on Prascend, I found the APF did not help with the veil at all. It is a great product , but every horse is an individual and not every product is for them. He did much better on twice daily Jiaogulan , the effect was virtually immediate. -- Dawn Wagstaff and Tipperary Saline, MI 2003 |

-- Hello! My mare seems much worse today. I just started the APF and have given two doses.I'm confused about something you wrote:ugh and now his feet are no longer improving since adding periled either. I feel like this damn pill has set us back to ground zero! What is periled? I'm beginning to wonder if it's possible that the Prascend is keeping my mare laminitic? Is that possible? Having problems now again getting her to eat the supplements. Salt has become impossible to get her to eat. Yes, UGH! Hi, Candice - gads, you must be tearing your hair out!!!!
With an ACTH of over 1250 pg/ml, he is clearly PPID. How soon after starting the pergolide did he stop eating his beet pulp and supplements? Will he eat beet pulp with nothing else added? The CA Trace Plus comes pretty close to balancing your hay, with your added magnesium, so good job there. Now, to get him to eat. Any chance at all of ulcers? A little tummy upset, combined with the fact that pergolide sometimes changes their taste buds (or something - not sure exactly why some horses become more picky after starting pergolide), could be the cause. Still eating his hay okay? Have a look at the Ulcers file: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/files/Ulcers Regarding iodized salt, I don't know what other people do, but I just buy mine in 2.5 lb boxes from the grocery store. I am sure there is a better way - wholesale food stores, maybe? Also, have a look at this post from Michele: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/221717 and read all the attached comments. Still having issues with my Gelding. He is not eating and not moving around as much as I would like.
I have tried to eliminate everything from his bowl and start over to see what the outlier is. I know he NOW will not eat the CA Trace Plus. But now he will not eat mag ox either. Where do people get bulk plain iodized salt from? Is this my problem if I am feeding him salt from TSC that is not iodized or may have some other ingredients? Also, I have been trying to read every article and word on this page and do my own research. The vey gave him his fall shots (5 way) when he had his most recent blood pulled for the IR & PPID tests. She did a sugar test- which I will not allow again after researching that this may have caused the laminitis episode I am fighting still. I really have no idea what else to do. He gets the pergolide split in the AM & PM now (1mg). He used to eat his salt, mag oz, CA Trace Plus, chia seeds with beet pulp for MONTHS prior to adding this pergolide. Now he won't eat. Even with a month plus of being on APF. Orchard hay tested great. ugh and now his feet are no longer improving since adding periled either. I feel like this damn pill has set us back to ground zero! -- Candice Piraino September 2018, Summerfield, FL Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Candice%20and%20Shark Shark's Photo Album: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=71507 . |
