After dropping his Prascend to 2.5 mg. Relevante seemed to improve in regard to the hyperactive/spooky behavior he was exhibiting. So i purchased compounded pergolide in a comparable dose. When my vet came out Nov. 21 to give vaccinations he was running his hand down his side to assess how much he could feel his ribs and Relevante shot forward in the cross ties. I thought maybe it might be "touch me nots" so i'm in the process of getting his selenium and Vitamin E tested. However there have been more incidents. There were horses in the aisle being saddled and several people and he began to snort and blow with worried lines above his eyes. This evening the barn owner texted me to tell me Relevante was spooking. He's been in his stall for a couple weeks because the weather has created about 4 inches of goopy mud in his paddock. i was hoping to take him into the arena but heavy rain on the metal roof has prohibited that.due to the noise it makes. Should i consider taking him to 2 mg. of compounded Pergolide?

Hi Lynn,
If he has been in his stall for a couple of weeks, it may not be the pergolide but the confinement that is contributing to the spookiness. It's tough when the weather doesn't cooperate, but many horses would be nearly out of their minds with that much stall time.  High insulin will drive some horses into crazy behavior.

I agree with Paula; my gut feeling is that it is not the pergolide. I suspect that he was Mr. Quiet when you first got him because he was not on pergolide, and so was more lethargic than his true, healthy way of being would normally show. 

Behaviour is always a complicated, and multi-factorial issue. Also, talk to your hay balancer about increasing magnesium. I ended up having to increase magnesium by 25% because I hadn't taken into account the very large amount of calcium in our well water. One mare actually had muscle tremors; the other mare was Mrs. Spooky, but became much more settled once I had the magnesium figured out. Note - it may not be a magnesium issue at all.

Before i put jesse on pergolide, he was a sad depressed horse.  Very different when pergolide does the job

LJ, I have heard this a number of times, including cases where the owner is thinking they have an absolutely new horse. Jesse is a lucky horse to have you as his owner; and Relevante is a very lucky horse to have Lynn as his owner also. Thanks to both of you for being such good horse dads/mums!

Jaini thanks for your keen medical insights as usual and Paula and LJ for your thoughtful advice based on knowledge/experience...[something i still lack]. I have ordered the products Dr. K. recommended and am making up new supplement baggies with the extra vitamin A. I did increase Relevante's magnesium. Originally he was getting 1/2 tsp. 2 X day, Jaini you recommended increasing to 2 tsp. 2 X a day and checking to make sure he didn't have soft/loose stool. He has not experienced that so i believe that means he isn't getting too much magnesium. I hate that he hasn't been able to get out of his stall because of the awful weather but tomorrow it's supposed to be clear so i'm taking him to the arena. I agree that behavior is complicated. When he has an episode of spookiness he appears anxious and afraid to me (snorting, blowing, whites of eyes, wrinkle lines above eyes). I'm really trying to study/observe him to ferret out anxiety from just feeling good.  I'm also working with my hay balancer...she is having me weigh two bales and then have the caregiver count how many flakes he actually eats a day for a week to determine a more accurate weight/amount he should be getting. She's going to recheck all the mineral amounts and the digestible energy. I'm going to incorporate Dr. K's protocol and monitor him. One step at a time i'm going to try things until i figure out what he needs/wants and what works. thanks again for all the great support/help!
