InsulinWise- would this really help with IR?

Is this another snake oil product?
Apparently it is only available through a licensed veterinarian.

Active Ingredients
Lysine 1,605 mg
Leucine 1,150 mg
Resveratrol 750 mg
Quercetin 500 mg

They say: "The propriety blend of ingredients in InsulinWise are research-proven to support lower insulin levels and increased adiponectin concentrations in horses suffering from insulin dysregulation. Maintaining normal levels of these hormones and decreasing insulin resistance can provide a clinical benefit by decreasing the risk of laminitis."

Thanks in advance

This product was recently discussed in an article on thehorse.com.  The research was presented at the AAEP Convention in December.

Sorry, I'm not sure how to make this a clickable link.

Thank you!!  I even read those and forgot the name of the product.  Apologise for revisiting this topic.  Sorry.

Revisiting topics is not a waste of time!    i.e.    although I have been a member for quite a while,   don’t recall seeing this product discussed,    and find it very interesting.

You sent a link for insulin wise that opens up to a page that was not on that subject. My vet has today brought up insulinwise.  Is this something I should consider. Can you resend what Dr. Kellon wrote about or perhaps a few new words on insulinwise.   Certainly the ingredients dont appear groundbreaking. Thank you

You mean me LJ? That link is to info on resveratrol, one of the main components of Insulin Wise.

No. Lorna’s link doesn’t open up a discussion on insulinwise.

You have to use the "Msg #" search box, not the grey "Search button".  :)

This is what Dr Kellon said in message 230937:

"  Jan 12   #230937

I want to see the details of the actual research, not some cherry picked graphs that have no details. The amounts of these ingredients are extremely small. There is no magic bullet for IR. Outrageous price for what you get.  "

Company says there is a synergistic effect with all the ingredients.. making the low dose of reservatol  , not an issue..
the company will return money for the product. if not satisfied.. . I will try for 6 weeks and do cornell  labs.... with a horse over 200 for insulin. like . Jesse..  what is the harm..?   2 # for 30 days. I ordered 4#.. You can order online  easy.... do a search.  ...  My  vet suggested I look at the product..

LJ,
It was my understanding that they use the Dex suppression test to decide if a refund will be given. Not one hundred percent sure, but when I looked at it, I remember that being the deal breaker for me. Equithrive is basically the same thing, correct?
Good luck. Let us know.

I’m not familiar with it with rice. I can only tell you about the developer told me that the money would be refunded if not to my satisfaction. I did let her know very clearly that I don’t do oral  sugar test and she didn’t have a problem with that. I tried ordering online around into a problem. Your current vet should be the one to order this for you. I will keep you all posted I should start mine in a few days and  know more after i test  in six weeks

Make sure nothing else changes LJ. Hay, minerals, water, other food, work, meds should all remain the same for the next two months. Being in a boarding situation, hay change would be my biggest concern. Also remember ambient temp can mess with insulin results.

Good luck

I’m thrilled that you’re going to test this and share the results with us. I realize one horse is not a statistically-significant test; but it’s a start, and wouldn’t it be wonderful if your horse benefited?!

LJ, regarding Nancy's comments about controlling for the myriad variables that influence insulin, and as a scientist, I can't stress enough how important this is. I would have a clear cut plan in place and would even suggest serial blood draws taken at the same time each day. I realize how expensive this could be. I would be happy to look over your diet and forage analysis as well as your plan for this experiment.

LJ - can you get a copy of the full abstract presented at the AAEP meeting from your veterinarian? The meeting proceedings are available, https://aaep.org/newsroom/publications but I am not a member and do not have access. I would like to see the description of the experiment because the devil is ALWAYS in the details.

I would also caution members about the wording on the InsulinWise advertisement, "Research-Proven." A an early phase trial in a limited sample doesn't "prove" anything. In human trials we typically go to Phase III trials before any claims can be made about efficacy and safety. Here, you study a few horses and the product goes to market!

There is very little data on the website and whatever is presented (in 4 horses) seems to demonstrate that the product blunts the rapid insulinemic response to an oral sugar test, but what happens after that? All of the data shown emphasize the peak insulin response at 60 minutes. That doesn't inform what the effect might be on chronic hyperinsulinemia. In other words, the product seems to blunt the immediate postprandial effect to a bolus of glucose, but then what?
