loose stool and mild diarrhea
Hi there,
My IR/Cushings guy tends to have loose stool and mild diarrhea often. His manure is somewhat formed but there is watery liquid to follow, which runs down his legs and butt cheeks. He is already on the probiotic Forco daily in his food. I do give him ulcergard if its really bad, but I don't know if that actually helps with this issue. He seems to have a sensitive GI system and gets this issue very often. I wanted to know if a prebiotic would be beneficial for this? I read Ration Plus is suggested here and I also wanted to know if ABC Pro Bi was an option? He also gets diarrhea if we travel anywhere, which is more stress related and I always give him the ulcergard when we are dealing with stress (travel, vaccines, wormer, drastic changes in temps, etc) Currently no major changes in his food or hay. He is on 3/4 pill of prascend daily. Balanced diet. Kept in dry lot with hay nets and measured hay allotment daily. I don't know anything at all, apparently I haven't even figured out how to post an original message on here, but I was wondering, have you tried Uckele's GUT? It seems to be helping my 29 yr mare.....

Ration Plus works really well for loose stools. I have used it on several horses and foals. I have also used Platinum Performace GI with great success but it does have added iron if that is an issue for your horse.
Good luck! Sue Williams |

Josie used to have loose stools often also. I treated her for ulcers, which didn't seem to help all that much. Putting her on a diet of mainly TC Timothy balance cubes slowed gut sounds a lot, but she still had loose stools occasionally. I tried Forco and Ration Plus, but they didn't seem to help. I used her loose stools as one symptom for increasing pergolide. Last fall I started her on amino acids (yellow pea powder) and she hasn't had a loose stool since-not even when I think she needs a pergolide increase.

This was a major issue with Ellie. They following has helped her tremendously. She still gets the occasional flare up, but it is much less frequent and less severe now.
Morning: HorseTech's GutWerks plus a tablespoon of l-glutamine and a couple of teaspoons of Uckele Psyllium Powder, mixed with a tiny bit of oil to make it more appealing, with a handful of Cavalor Fiber Force Evening: Uckele GUT plus a tablespoon of l-glutamine and a couple of teaspoons of Uckele Psyllium Powder, mixed with a bit of oil and a few handfuls of Cavalor Fiber Force. If she has breakthrough squirts, a short term dose of Uckele Absorb All usually helps. -- Cassie March 2017 Washington Ellie Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Cassie%20and%20Ellie |

Thanks for all the ideas you guys!!! I THOUGHT I had tried most everything with our Appy (not IR or PPID) and he does seem to be doing fairly well now with a change from RationPlus to Forco and the biggest helper seems to be the Cavalor Fiber Force. I give him a cupful am and pm over his other supps and he has nicely formed stools now and haven't noticed any "squirts" for awhile. I am excited to have a couple of backup ideas in my arsenal now...

He did have dead worms in his manure after worming. I am about to worm him again but not sure if the diarrhea is from worms, as he has diarrhea on and off. I think he has a sensitive system. He also gets bloated often. -- Vicky Monen and Samson Aug 2015, Alpharetta Ga. https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=1226 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Vicky%20and%20Samson |

My Cushings mare has had loose stools off and on for several years. I’ve tried everything!!! Nothing worked until I ran across an article on Chia seeds, it recommended 2 tablespoons twice daily. I started out gradually and honestly I noticed a difference within a few days. It’s been about 4 months and zero loose stools. We are both very happy!

Do you feed them crushed or whole?

Ho! Happy for you!
Can you put the link of the article? I have a horse who are the same except for the Cushing. We thought it’s because of sand but he had few episodes during this winter so it’s not sand. have a nice day! -- Renée and Camilla Port Cartier, Québec https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Camilla%20Case%20History.pdf https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=81104 |
