acetyl-L-carnitine

Stephanie Boyles

Hello,
I am reading more about the value of adding acetyl-L-carnitine to the IR horses diet to assist with leptin deficiencies.
I also found this link on the ECIR site:
https://www.canadianprotein.com/acetyl-l-carnitine
This link is a human product, so my question is twofold.... is there any risk to trying this product with my horse?  And secondly, how do I convert this powder to a dose appropriate for my horse?  (1170pds)
Your guidance is always appreciated!
Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,
acetyl-L-carnitine is fine to give to your horse.  There is a company here in the US called My Best Horse where we can buy it, nickname Alcar, and Joan gives the dosage for horses.  You could check her website for the dose and if she sells to Canada. She has a nice line of products a lot of us use for our horses.      mybesthorse.com

Hi Stephanie,

There's no leptin deficiency with EMS. Leptin is actually often elevated, with leptin resistance.

Thank you for this information!

One more quick question... I read a report by Dr. Kellon that states L Carintine is derived from Lysine.
https://drkhorsesense.wordpress.com/2019/03/23/acetyl-l-carnitine-the-powerful-versatile-nutrient-you-never-heard-of/
My horse receives Lysine via Insulin Wise.
http://www.kppvet.com/insulinwise/
Does that mean he is also getting the l carintine from this?

There's not enough lysine in Insulinwise to  make a difference.

So is their a benefit to adding acetyl-L-carnitine to an IR horse along with Lysine?

Thanks LJ!  Did you do pre/post blood tests?

I started my horse on insulin wise when his insulin skyrocketed suddenly in the spring.  We suspect it was alfalfa hay, but he is controlled now (touch wood) and I am afraid to take him off of it just in case it is helping.... I will finish this container and try taking him off of it, monitoring very closely of course.

Stephanie,

If you took him off alfalfa at the same time, there's no way to tell if the  Insulinwise did anything. Yes, LJ did blood work.

Yes, I took him off alfalfa at the same time, so there is no way to tell if Insulinwise was helpful.  I did do blood tests, but again, they will be influenced more by the alfalfa.  I will let you know if there is a change when I take him off of this product.
Just to close the loop, I contacted Scott at Mad Barn and they carry L-Carnitine, so I will try this.  Is there a difference between acetyl-l-carnitine and l-carnitine?

Yes, there's a difference but there is some interconversion between the two in the body. You can also get ALCar from human sites like https://www.canadianprotein.com/acetyl-l-carnitine#/84-product_options-powder_454_g_1_lb

I just want to add my 2 cents on the Alfalfa subject. I've discovered that most Alfalfa is sprayed with a salt-like substance... Starts with a P, I believe... Can't remember the name. It prevents mold, BUT it increases insulin levels in horses. So if the Alfalfa you've been giving smells like pickles or vinigar, it's been sprayed! I think Alfalfa that isn't sprayed doesn't elevate the insulin levels. The trick is to find the untreated Alfalfa!

Hi Deirdre

You mean propionic acid? If so, that is not what has been reported here although I know it has been reported elsewhere. Can you please point us to the research or articles on increase in insulin horses?

Here's one thread from the archives on what it does in the horse.
https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/topic/2759738#201801

In addition, lots of member horses have been negatively affected by untreated alf.

Here's my experience with propionic acid
