Wheat Germ - how much is OK in PPID?

jen@...

Cowboy will only eat his Emergency Diet well if I sprinkle Wheat Germ on it.  After he eats what’s sprinkled, he stops eating until I sprinkle more.   What would be the most wheat germ I should offer him total?  Is 1/4 C too much for a650lb 12.1h Welsh Pony?

Wheat germ is about 38% starch so it depends on what else he is eating with it and how much.

Hello Dr. Kellon - thank you for your reply.  I am currently feeding Cowboy the Emergency Diet:

~ 1 Cup of Rinsed/Soaked/Rinsed Beet Pulp that is mixed with unsweetened apple sauce
Vitamin E Powder, Magnesium Powder, Iodized Salt and Ground Flax Seed

I am currently adding 2 TBSP of Wheat Germ or else he won't eat it all.  He gets this exact ration 2x Daily.

Then he is getting a Hay Bag with hay that has been soaked for an hour and drained.  At night he is turned out in a mostly dirt paddock with a round bale.  I am in the process of purchasing a grazing muzzle at this time.

Jennifer.
Have you read this file yet about Picky Eaters:  https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/files/9b%20Pulling%20it%20Together/Picky%20Eaters%20Checklist.pdf

I am adding Brewers Yeast and Fenugreek powder to my horse's "bucket feed". He is finally finishing his bucket feed that holds his minerals. I also know that my horse despises really WET feed. I found a source for soyhull pellets which will crumble apart with a very small amount of warm water added. Soyhull pellets are safe and can be used in place of grains.

Hello Bonnie - thank you for your suggestions.  Yes!  I had read the Picky Eaters Checklist.  In fact, I believe that is where I learned about using wheat germ.  I tried Fenugreek, but I suspect I accidentally put too much in.  How much do you use in one feeding?  Or, how are you using it- if you premix your bucket food in bulk?  Are you using Fenugreek capsules for humans and just open a capsule?  I was having trouble finding Fenugreek in a powder that was not in capsules.

Tell me more about the Soy Hull Pellets.  I am currently doing the emergency diet until I can complete the hay analysis.  The emergency diet calls for beet pulp.
