Hi Lindsey and all I just spoke with Randy on this issue. Starch typically runs 4 percent. Additionally there are four independently run tests in the files that show ~4 percent for starch. I am following this thread. I put my horse on Stabul 1 and within 3 months his insulin level doubled. Now, I don't know if it is the feed or not. Patti who helped me with my mineral mix mentioned that it has alfalfa and some horses can't handle that. (It seems the numbers on that are low). My horse has never had alfalfa hay so I don't know if he can handle it or not. When his last insulin levels were taken the weather was very cold and that could have increased his levels as well. It has also been a fairly winter and I currently don't have a dry lot so he is out with a grazing muzzle and although there isn't much out there he does get nibbles. It will be very nice this weekend so we are going to til up 1 pasture to make it a dry lot. With adding all of his supplements (mineral mix) and with him being such a picky eater, Patti and I agreed to get him taking all of his supplements before changing his carrier. I am curious what we find our from Randy. Thanks, Amy Mooresville, Indiana Stormy, Case History, Photo Album |

Weren't there several messages back and forth about this last year? I can't remember the details, but I think it ended up with the middlings being ok.

Hi, LIndsey - good catch. I found on the EquiAnalytical website that wheat middlings have an average starch of 23.6%, which is way, way too high for us. There is no breakdown of ESC and starch in the analysis on the Stabul 1 website: http://stabul1.com/stabul-1/ I will email Randy and ask what the scoop is. I was looking at the Stabul 1 product and the ingredients. I know its approved to use as a carrier for the supplements. It has wheat middlings as #1 ingredient, I thought that was a no no for IR horses?
