Jasuur Case History uploaded

V F

I think I just uploaded Jasuur's case history & bloodwork files. This has been very frustrating & took over a month. However, I knew a lot of the steps to take to keep him from total founder and he is doing well right now. Could someone please look over the file & comment on steps taken so far? The bloodwork shows high ACTH. Is the high end Fe measurements also of concern?
For the last two+ years I have been trying to get the orange out of my blacks & bays. With washing the hay, Jas is the darkest I've ever seen him. It's almost scary.
I have one other horse tested at the same time but not sure how to combine the two case histories, so I did Jas first.
Thanks for any help.

Nice job, Virginia. You can just upload your other horse's information to the same folder - or create another one just for that horse.

It looks like you're doing pretty well. He was severely IR, actually diabetic, but has improved clinically/symptomatically. The iron data you have so far is compatible with iron overload.  I know what you mean about the coat difference being almost scary. It's pretty dramatic when you get it right!

Only way to tell if your pergolide dose is sufficient is to test. Did you do a hay analysis? How did you determine which trace mineral levels to use?

Hi Eleanor,

Thanks for answering.

I plan on doing a blood draw on Wed, the 6th, since that will be two weeks at the 1.05mg dose. I do have some 0.5mg that I could add to get the dose up to 1.55mg.

I'm pretty sure the iron & bleached coats is from the hay. The hay producers have gone to using a rotary mower which is like a lawn mower & sucks up dust & dirt & old cow pies into the hay. Using 8 point rakes adds to the problem. So now I'm looking forward to at least rinsing hay all winter to get the iron down. For the last year and a half we have been hauling tested municipal water from town with no difference in coat color.

I have located some good looking hay & have a sample bagged to send to Equi-Analytical tomorrow. I used the mineral balance that I had for the remaining bales of last year's hay. It's always pretty close each year. But with this controlled diet, I've taken the amounts of Cu & Zn down to 1/3rd of what I was using all winter, and still getting this dramatic result!

Hi Virginia,

I am just a member of the group. I look over some labs and x-rays when I can to learn more. I was looking at Jasuur's and I noticed you got the Iron Ferritin and TIBC done, which I believed only KSU does and a Leptin which I thought only Cornell does. The results don't have the labs name's at the top. It almost appears as if they were all done at one lab. Can you tell me what lab(s) you used for future reference?

Thanks and I'm glad to hear you have guys have been experiencing good progress!

Hi Virginia,

Quick question on the blood work report in the files - the lab lists the horse as Jazz, a female. Was more than one horse's blood work sent in at the same time and is there a possibility that the results were switched? Or is it just that someone misspelled Jas' name and typed in female instead of male?

-- Hi Lavinia,

Yes, this was part of the frustration. I drew the blood for two horses (Spiritt's case history is still in the making), put it in iced water & took to our small animal vet down the street to spin down. She had previously opened a Cornell account just so she could help us with the horses. She thought Jas was a mare & labelled it as such. But, he's a gelding! The bloodwork all went to Cornell & results were emailed on three different pages with the two horses results mixed together on each page. So I finally had to literally cut &copy to get the results together for each individual horse.

Ouch! That made for a convoluted, time-sapping experience.

At least we know that the results DO belong to Jas - that's the important part. Thanks for making things clear, Virginia.
