Bentonite Clay
Hi, Is Bentonite Clay ok for use in horses wth PPID and IR?? It was recommended for my horse by a veterinarian. She suggested it would be helpful to remove toxins from his system. He has had some hives and been very reactive to the girth and touch near his flank. He is currently on Gastroguard and Sufralcate for suspected ulcers.

Someone more knowledgeable please chime in, but I thought it was not recommended because of the iron content, which you want to keep low in IR/PPID horses.

Jan, here is a link to a message in 2016 that explains the concerns regarding bentonite. Contamination of the clay with iron and other metals is a big concern as is changes in blood parameters with long term use.
https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/198820 FYI, Platinum Performance sells a smectite product( same family of clays that are in bentonite) that they recommend for use for a very short period of time in horses and foals experiencing diarrhea. Again, the key word is short time. Here is their webpage for it, and if you google Bio Sponge online, you will come up with several studies on it, almost all on post surgical use to reduce the chance of colitis. https://www.platinumperformance.com/equine-bio-sponge-supplement -- Dawn Wagstaff and Tipperary Saline, MI 2003 Tipperary Case History |

IME, balancing the diet had a huge effect on skin and G/I issues. I think you have done this based on 2018, CH but wanted to be sure.

I recently used Bio Sponge for our Appy (not IR or PPID) because of prolonged "cow Pies", not exactly Diarrhea, but close. The vet recommended it for 2 or 3 days (half a tube twice a day) and we used for 2 days and it did stop the cycle. We added additional fiber (additional Oat Pellets and some Oat Hay also)... Just an FYI.

Hi Jan, Do you have more recent bloodwork for RC? Looking at your CH it looks like he was tested at the beginning of April 2018 and then started on Prascend. I would be more inlcined to think that the hives and reactivity could be related to his PPID and IR but without knowing what his current levels are that's just a guess.

Hi, Thank you for the responses. His most recent bloodwork in October, 2019 was as follows ACTH 52.5pg/ml, Glucose 83mg/dL, Insulin 39.47ulu/ml, and Leptin 5.92ng/ml. Maybe I should increase his Prescend. I didn’t do that this fall, based on my vet’s recommendation.
I’ve tried to update my Case History without success. So sorry!! I appreciate this group so much for all your expertise, guidance and support. Hi Jan,
To update your case history you need to use the original doc file that is hopefully saved on your device somewhere OR you can download a fresh copy from https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/files/Case%20History%20Tools and use that to add the latest information. Save that version to your device and then upload a copy to your case history folder (and delete the old copy out of your file).
Based on that bloodwork he would benefit from an increase in Prascend as well as possibly having his diet tightened up - again, we'd need to know what the current diet is to be able to comment on that though. Based on the case history he should be eating no more than 18lbs of hay and grain a day and it looks like he's getting more like 24lbs a day which could be problematic.
Thanks,

Could anyone explain the difference between bentonite clay and bio sponge please?

Hi Maria, I just happened to Google that this morning! I ordered some Bio-Sponge for a 31 yr. old gelding (nonIR, nonPPID) with loose manure, and the only ingredient listed on the container is di-tri-smectite. What I learned, in a nutshell, is that smectite is a type of clay with viral and bacterial absorbing properties, also used to treat acute diarrhea in children. Bentonite clay might contain an amount of smectite, but apparently the amount is variable. I’m sure there will be others who will chime in with more information and, hopefully, who will share their Bio-Sponge experiences. Carla

That´s what I got too, thanks a lot Carla. Was my understanding that bentonite contains smectite but don´t know exactly the difference when at use. Would like to know what product might be an option here that works the same as Bio Sponge because I can´t get this one in Spain.
Are you going to try only for a short period of time? Let us know how it goes please. -- María Durán Navarro Dec 2017 Madrid (Spain) Plutón´s Case History Plutón´s Photo Album _._,_._,_ |

Great question! I just looked at a product that is supposed to be just bentonite clay and it was really, really high in iron,. Looking for more information. Many thanks! Nancy Reed and Jazzi Match 2013 San Diego County |

My 8 year old mare had diarrhea, gas and liquid that ran down her legs for 4+ months last summer non stop. Weeks on bio sponge did nothing to help her. I tried a LOT of other things too. What finally worked for her was high doses of a high quality probiotic and 2 oz of psyllium twice a day.
