I.r. horse questioning joint injections
My girl mirage got diagnosed with bursitis in her shoulder. She has been on previcoxx for 40 days now that's she's been off it a week she is now sore again after cantering and bucking in the pasture when hay was delivered.
Vet suggest that she be on previcoxx indefinitely but I feel that if she is on it for so long and she ends up reinjuring it when riding or something she may really hurt it badly. The vet/lameness specialist said that I could do the previcoxx or injections. With her being i.r. I'm scared at what would be in the injections. Any suggestions as to where to go from here is greatly appreciated. -- Jonni Jump June, 2018 Augusta Ga. Hello Jonni!
What type of injections is your vet suggesting? Previcoxx long term is not good. Corticosteroid injections would not be recommended for a horse with IR but there may be other options available. You have not included test results in your Case History. Do you have test results for Mirage? -- Tanna April 2019, (Yahoo Group member 2008)

No she's never been tested

If she's really IR (only testing will tell), corticosteroids are out. I'd be more concerned about treating for bursitis without ruling out an underlying cause but then again I don't know the history or what has been done already. Since we don't know if she's IR, this discussion is really OT but I would say you need ultrasound, radiographs and sometimes bone scan to uncover the real cause of the bursitis (unless you know she got kicked or something) and until then I would use topical Sore No More rubs three or four times a day.

Hi Jonni, Has this horse been confirmed to have IR? If she's not IR or you just think she is due to appearance any advice we could offer is at best a guess.
