At. My. Wits. End.
Poseido is having an epic temper tantrum and I've had it. Ive had this horse on BP with his minerals mixed in for YEARS, with little issue as far as him eating it.
I added a third horse, and switched that one and my other horse to SafeChoice Maintenance and now Po will not eat his food. At ALL. I tried plain BP. Nothing. I tried BP with Mag Ox. Nothing. I tried BP with Mag ox and a few drops of peppermint EO. Nothing. I tried BP, Mag Ox, AZ Complete (which he usually LOVES). Nothing. I tried BP, Mag OX, AZ Complete, plus a few drops of peppermint EO. Nothing. I tried BP, Mag Ox, AZ Copper Complete plus tumeric (which he normally NOMS cuz he likes the turmeric flavor). Nothing. There's not a @#$% wrong with him. Teeth are fine, he eats his hay with no issues, drinking fine, pooping & peeing fine. I think he's literally having a fit because the other 2 have better smelling food than he does. And I. Have. Had it. This has been going on over 2, almost 3, weeks. I am literally not going to feed him at all this coming week because I am just throwing $$$ away. He has his hay so he's not starving. I don't know what else to do. I have a brand new big container of AZ Copper just going to waste because of him. He literally stands there staring at Franky the entire time he's eating and ignores his own food. I. Have. Had it. -- Coral & Po Sept 2013 Midland, Texas |

Hi Carol,
"Ive had this horse on BP with his minerals mixed in for YEARS, with little issue as far as him eating it. " Don't undervalue how very fortunate you have been, for so long. :-) To begin with, I would examine why I'm feeding the other 2 something else....if I were convinced that Po were detecting a better-smelling food than his. I'm skeptical about that, but..... I would also be wondering if it was more an issue of a different dynamic going on with the addition horse. Having no success with the above efforts, I would try soy hull pellets, to take the place of the BP, for Po. And maybe the other 2 as well. I would try them just moistened, without additives, first. For at least several days. If things were going well,I'd beginning adding items . Some people sprinkle their minerals on the hay, too. Dunno. Very frustrating. I do know that, first hand. -- Lorna in Eastern Ontario

I know your pain to... the... letter.
I got so mad at my horse that I offered it to the other horse (he didn't get a daily ration). The other horse was so delighted to get something for a change that he dove into it. Of course, as soon as he did, Joe decided HE wanted it, but I held him back. Did that for a couple of days until Joe decided it was really pretty good stuff after all. Now I have no problems. No guarantees, but might be worth a try. -- Kathleen (KFG in KCMO) Director and Research Advisor, ECIR Group Inc. Missouri, USA, 2005 https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=3-I7UI0AAAAJ

I am so freaking mad that I am totally going to try that. And I'm going to give Po's to BOTH other horses!! GERRRR.
And I'm not buying any new food for Po this month for him to try because I just bought the AZ Complete. I have the other 2 on SafeCHoice because that's cheaper than having them ALL on BP and AZ Complete and the other supplements. -- Coral & Po Sept 2013 Midland, Texas |

You could try putting the minerals or meds in a paste and syringe it in to his mouth, and try not feeding him for a few days . this worked with my mare. The only prob with her is I cant salt in to her easily. Hope that helps. Sent from Mail for Windows 10

I also got sick of feed and supplements being spilled, spat out, or walked-away-from. I syringe a paste of mag ox, trace minerals and a teaspoon of salt (have the same trouble with salt in feed as Sandy--rest of the salt goes on hay) in apple sauce once a day, She also gets a teeny syringe of water with dissolved jiaogulan before feeding--this doesn't seem to taste too bad. Safe treat after each syringe. No more dramas with her bucket feed, and it's a good tradeoff for both of us. Thanks, Maxine/Sandy. I will also try that if feeding his food to the other 2 for a couple days doesn't work.

Lorna- no worries. I literally get that all the time and I'm used to it. Just the way it goes when you have a different name.

OMG I feel your pain! I have the most stubborn horse in the world. I’ve tried every recommended mineral mix (AZCC, AZ regional mix, CATrace, Mad Barn, Vermont Blend, KIS trace, Ukele copper and zinc pellets). She won’t eat any. I have multiple bags, one of every safe carrier feed I could find locally (BP, all 3 flavors of Stabul 1, Timothy pellets, Orchard grass pellets, Timothy Balance cubes, and in desperation even alfalfa pellets and cubes, which she normally loves but not with minerals in it!) I syringed supplements for awhile but that got old fast, for both of us! I finally resorted to mixing powdered minerals into a soaked flake of her Bermuda and finally got her to eat every bite. This too is a little bit of a pain but I have a routine now and it’s not too bad. Every night I fill a small tub and set it by the fence with a round brick paver on top to hold the hay down. In the morning I fill it up and go eat breakfast. After 30-60 min of soaking i go back out. I have a wood framed screen (bottom wire frame from an old rabbit hutch) I flip the tub over onto and let it drain while I mix supplements (Custom mineral from Horsetech, salt, flax, vit E, small amount of canola oil for vit e). Then I flip the screen and bucket together back over and carry bucket to her trough, and mix the minerals in as I’m filling her trough. I even planted a small melon and squash garden where I dump the water so it is not wasted. It works for us and she is finally eating all her minerals. Aren’t our horses sure lucky that we love them and go thru all this Bulls$@t for them. Don’t even get me started on her pergolide, lol!

ferne fedeli
I have Rod at Horsetech add sugarfree molasses flavoring to my custom mineral mix. Maybe that might help.

Oh my, you do have issues with your horse getting the stuff in....I have tried numerous strategies as well with my horse who is highly suspicious of her food bowl....So, I went back to plain stuff....then added everything one day at a time as a pinch...literally enough for an ant to eat....then gradually added two pinches a day then three then four...you get the idea. its a slow process...and its best to stretch it out over many many days....as many days as you can. I also was hiding the pergolide tabs in a clear vegetable capsule...decided to do the opposite and took it out of the capsule and it turns out she doesn't like the vegetable cap....I then found items that would get her attention and use them for three to four days than switch before she rejected it....to a different thing that she likes...but after 3-4 days she rejects it so...i just keep switching it around and sometimes I even give her a treat prior to feeding so she has the treat flavor in her mouth before she eats...so far this strategy is working...for now.
When I accepted the fact that this is in her nature to be suspicious...I decided to let that angry energy go. It wasn't helping me nor was it helping our relationship....some days I just turn and walk away and go do my other barn chores and ignore her. Some days, I just leave the whole thing there and by the time I get home from work, its gone...completely gone, licked clean....so its a journey thats for sure...hang in there and just keep trying....Also, try not to get any pergolide on anything else...it seems they have a sixth sense for the smell of pergolide.... -- Trisha DePietro Aug 2018 NH Dolly and Hope's Case Histories https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Trisha%20and%20Dolly%20-%20Hope Dolly's Photos Hope's Photos Primary Responder |

I've had horses refuse to eat something if they can smell more tempting food.. I started feeding my old guy TC Senior and the minis then refused to eat TC Lite anymore. Now they all get Senior to carry supplements. You could try sprinkle a little of the preferred food on top, or feed them all the same thing. Carol and Rossi (over the bridge) 2008. |

Carol you just reminded me - when my mare needed to be switched to different feed she threw a huge hissy fit (and she was always fussy). We ended up doing a thin layer of the regular sweet feed on top of her grain to get her to eat it. Fortunately she didn't have an issue with the ESC+starch in that feed in that amount but the list of things she stopped eating for no apparent reason stretched back much further than her diagnosis with PPID.

i agree with Trisha ... LET THAT ANGRY ENERGY GO. Many of us have gone through this feeding problem. Go to a place of compassion instead of frustration. Try not feeding her anything but hay for a day or two, then give her a little mash of something she likes. The next day begin to “inch back” all the other stuff slowly (over a month). Just add a “pinch” of the bitter tasting supplements to something she does like. Leave it there until the next day and see if she ate it. If she did, add another pinch and so on. If she goes off it again, reduce to previous amount. Just keep doing this bit by bit. Don’t get mad at her as your negative energy is getting in your way. Play with her instead of always being the one that brings distasteful stuff to her. Give her a safe treat when you greet her to build back trust. Take the time it takes so it pays off on the end. Your horse depends on you. Remember to be kind at all times. Your emotions are picked up immediately when you arrive. Take deep slow breaths as you approach the barn, relax your mind and body, think positive thoughts and loose your anger. Please... -- Pat and Savannah Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada January 2018 Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Pat%20and%20Savannah Photos: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=22028&p=pcreated,,,50,2,0,0 |

So I gave his food to the other 2 for 3 days and held off on giving him anything. Last night he ate his food. Fingers crossed that this lasts for a while.

Lorna, you were so right lol! Definitely fragile news... that did not last. Yesterday I bought TC Lite because TSC had it in stock and they didn't have anything else remotely viable for him. So he got 1/2 a scoop of that last night and was one happy pony. But then I remembered that TC Lite isn't *actually* that "Lite", so I just did a file search, and sure enough, that won't work for him long term because he's so sensitive. So now I'm looking for a local hygain/ODTBC/Stabul1 source, and I will pleasantly surprised if I can find any of those nearby.
