Iron - worth testing? - Bump

Thoughts?  Vet comes out next week.
Wondering if iron panel is truly worth doing.

Hey Tracy, I'll offer my 2 cents.  They may not correspond the the view of ECIR.

Unless the results will change how you manage Salsa, or unless you have gobs of money and don't mind paying for interesting data, or he is having recurring laminitis events no matter how carefully the diet is controlled and you need to know if iron overload is the cause, IMO it's not worth doing it.  If he is already on a low-as-possible-iron diet, properly balanced to other trace minerals, and phlebotomy is not an option then there's not much more you can do if he is iron overloaded.  I have had the same thoughts and for me, if Shaku is iron overloaded (and like you and Salsa, I believe he is), it's not going to change how I manage him.  I wish I had gobs of money to test him just to know, but in reality he is on as low of an iron, balanced diet as I can get, and because we are 6 hrs from his vet clinic regular phlebotomies are out of the question.
