Free testing for PPID in Canada.

Judy and Bugsy

Someone had mention the possibility of free testing for PPID in Canada so I went digging. I found this link. I haven’t tried it yet as I’m still waiting for the supplies to get blood drawn but I thought I would pass it along.

Yes! I just got my testing done free! Of course it still costed me $150 for the 5 minutes my vet was at my farm 🙄 but at least it saved me the $150 lab fee

Thank you for posting this as I am planning to get my 25 year old gelding tested. When testing for insulin and glucose levels, would the tests be done at same lab? I know ACTH is done at University of Guelph. Just trying to get information before I book an appointment.

Judy, do you know where the free ACTH is done?  I also need insulin and glucose run, too, but if I have to pay for them as stand-alone tests (rather than as part of the PPID package at U Guelph), plus pay for overnight shipping of a second sample to another lab I'm not sure I'd be saving much money to make it worth the extra effort.

I signed up my PPID  horse for this Free program.  It is being run by Boehringer Ingelheim and has been running on Facebook.  But it is only for the actual test cost and not associated tests like other vet fees or other tests. This is the answer I got from them:"Sorry Rhonda, this program is designed to identify new cases of PPID. Please contact your veterinarian directly if you have concerns about your horse’s health."

Hi Val,

You can do all the tests at the same time, but you might want to be sure of what payments you'll have to make for both the barn call and the fees for the insulin/glucose tests as those won't be paid for by BI.  I know a number of our members have taken advantage of this offer before so hopefully somebody can chime in and let you know if they've done all the tests at the same time and how that worked.

Hi Val

i thought I read somewhere on the  Boehringer site that the tests are being done
At Guelph - but I’m not positive - I was doing a lot of Google searching that day. Boehringer Contacted my vet shortly after I filled  in the questionnaire and my vet said he set up an account through them and will get the testing done through them - whatever that means?  Sorry not much help about that but I’m thinking a call to

Boehringer would sort it out.

I found this link from 2019 and last year it was done at Guelph

If it is of interest, my vet replied to my query about this program and said:

"unfortunately, the test is designed for horses that are not currently undergoing frequent testing and management. The other side to this is that as a clinic we are only allotted 2 free tests per trial period and we have used them already in this phase. The rep would not grant me an additional test for Shaku at this time. She did say that if he was currently being treated with Prascend they would consider granting an additional test as they are also looking at data of the horses undergoing treatment."

My horse just got approved for this test. He tested negative in the spring, but has a lot of symptoms. Does anyone, who's had their horse tested with this offer, know if it includes ACTH, glucose and insulin?  It seems that the University of Guelph's lab code for ACTH includes all 3. But I'm not sure if that's where the lab work is being done.

I'm trying to decide if I should ask my vet to draw additional blood while he's here and have the glucose and insulin tested on my dime, if it's not included in the promotion. If I ask for glucose and insulin to be tested separately, my vet might send those to the local lab that they normally deal with. If that happened is there any disadvantage to having ACTH and glucose and insulin tested in different labs? Is it true that a glucose test kind of acts like a control because it's easier to tell if the blood has been handled properly for glucose  than it is for ACTH?  Not that the they are prepared exactly the same, but it might give me some comfort that the vet did it right.

My horse was rejected for this freebie.  Only the ACTH test is done free.  You still have to pay the vet costs.

Hi Susan, yes it's true glucose can be a good measure of how well the sample may have been handled.  But your ACTH won't be shipped with insulin and glucose anyways if you get the free ACTH test, or at least I was told I would have to pay for shipping 2x.  My preference is to use U Guelph as ECIR recommends for all my bloodwork.  Other labs may use different assays, which affects the number reported.  The ECIR calculator is based on the assays used at Cornell and U Guelph.  Whichever lab you choose though, it's best to stay with it for all your bloodwork if you want to be able compare results and know you are comparing apples to apples.

Hi Susan,

The free test is ACTH only.  If you want any other bloodwork done you will need to arrange that with the vet, preferably prior to his arrival.  You can insist on the bloodwork all being sent to Guelph as we know that the results from them are reliable and the range that they use is one that we are familiar with here.
